1090

I think this is my first deal so not sure I've done everything right. I believe this is the cheapest price at the moment.

  • I've been thinking about this purchase for some time now. Last year when I researched this TV it was among the best for PS5 gaming, does that still hold true? Main use would be gaming and watching sport and movies.

Would there be something better for these purposes?

    • +3

I think at this price point and size it still is.

Apparently the Sony A80J models just got a firmware update for VRR. But from what I’ve seen, the inputs on the LG still keep it a more suitable model.

I’m excited by the C1 going on sale, but I only watch movies and don’t game, so am torn between pulling the trigger on this vs. hoping for the 77” A80J to go on sale…

      • I got the c1 77 and it's crazy good for movies.

      • Not sure about the A80J but the VRR update for the 90H series disables local dimming when it's activated

      • +1

Lol the C1 is still amazing for movies, the A80J is ranked 0.1 better on rtings.com take it home and you wouldn't even know the difference 👍

        • I think people are referring to the superior upscaling of the A80J, as it’s still quite uncommon to get a very clean/high bitrate source.

    • Wirecutter agrees that this is one of the best ones, and the Sony A90J is an upgrade.
      https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-oled-tv/

Pricing recently seems to indicate there will be new models out soon, but that's always the case with electronics.

      • I know you can never tell with tech, but could there be a decent drop from this price in the next couple months? With new models coming you would think so, but from what I've read there are a lot of stock shortages across the board so prices might stay firm for a while?

        • I think they are running out these models so they can bring in the C2s they showed as CES this year which are reportedly available in March sometime.
          https://www.cnet.com/tech/home-entertainment/lg-brought-its-…

But I haven't been paying enough attention to be able to tell when they will actually be coming out unfortunately, so if anyone else knows then please chime in. The risk with this stuff seems to be if you wait longer for deeper discounts then maybe they will run out of old stock they've been trying to shift before you get the price you want.

        • +2

This would be one of the last price drops before the new models arrive. You've spotted a good deal here.

    • +6

Honestly it just depends how fussy/particular you are in your reasons for buying a new TV. I have this TV but i dont have any consoles, so can't comment there. For me it replaced a 5yr old Hisense 4K TV that 65M7000 that punched well above its weight. The OLED is clearly superior, especially with anything remotely dark or contrasting of colours, but unless you throw on proper high bitrate 4K content on it then its not particularly special as its being held back by the source.

Overall I am very happy with it for general use TV/Movies/HDR/DV etc however i mostly use it with an nVidia Shield Pro. I don't use its WebOS. Sports are fine too (i watch NRL and Soccer), there are a few different motion settings to adjust for use preference. If anything the biggest problem is the lack of high quality broadcasts to make use of how good a TV it is as there is only so much upscaling can do. My only other gripe would be because these OLED have such fast response time they dont seem to handle horizon panning type shots well without a hefty amount of motion smoothing which i hate. But this is not surprising, source vs panel speed vs smoothness settings we have to pick which we want to live with.

      • Great comment, thanks for this.

Not to distract from the subject of this post, but the idea of upscaling being important sways me in favour of the Sony A80J…

Just putting this out there in case people are trying to decide whether/why to buy this particular model vs. the Sony (seems to be a constantly hot question).

        Cheers

      • +2

The OLED handles lower quality sources much better than you imply. Any reasonable quality 1080p source (eg: Kayo, HD streaming) will look stunning.

The key is to use the most accurate picture setting with no picture or motion "enhancements" enabled.

Regarding panning: this is the nature of instant reponse time and sample and hold display. If you want to avoid this issue you need a plasma or a CRT. Black frame insertion goes some way to improve the presentation but is fiddly to set up and constantly enable and disable as required.

        • +1

You're right on all of the above, but the BFI darkens the picture too much for me. The only fix I found was to pick better sources. Motion smoothing results in the soap opera effect which ruins the video.

        • +1

Sorry mate you've misunderstood me, my fault, i was not clear enough. I'm not saying it's poor at it, it's not, but there is only so much it can polish a turd. A decent bitrate 1080 is not a low quality source in my view, as you say, that upscales and looks fine. Agreed.

What i was implying is that there is a gigantic amount of streaming out there especially in the wide world of IPTV that is either lower bitrate or lower resolution and bitrate…. both the nVidia Shield Pro and the LG OLED can only do so much with crap sources. Not so much a criticism of the TV but the media landscape we live in and alternative consumption methods. Even older TV shows that have never been remastered since the 80s, 90's etc. of which i have plenty on my NAS, its simply limited in what it can do. The Sony has the advantage there, but i was not prepared to pay the difference.

As i said, im very happy with the TV. Just trying to share my experience for anyone that may have more diverse use case to have realistic expectations.

          • @Xizor: Since you have the Shield I would recommend trying to match the Shield's output resolution to the content and let the TV do the scaling. The advantage of the Shield is that there are some apps such as Kodi which can perform resolution switching.

Although there's a lot of hype around the upscaling capabilities of the Shield in tech circles it's generally acknowleged as being a very poor upscaler amongst those who know. Especially when you use the god awful "AI upscaling" which is little more than a sharpness filter.

            • +1

@tp0: Yes mate, thanks for the consideration, am already doing including custom whitelist for Kodi.

      • I've got the 65" CX and if I were in the market now, knowing how awesome these panels are, I'd go for the 77". It's great to see OLED at a much more palatable price point than what this size was garnering when I was in market.

I mainly watch streaming services in 4K (Dolby Vision, HDR material) and it's incredible. Also game on an Xbox Series X and it handles the material beautifully.

I've not compared with anything else that's now out from competitors but this is a really nice television.

    • Won't go wrong with LG oled.

    • Sony A80J now has VRR and similar response times for gaming…I would say better PQ,upscaling and colour accuracy out OOTB….depends what your willing to pay though

    • +1

I bit the bullet and bought one of these late last year (approx $4700 using 5% off gift cards) to go with my PS5. Coming from a 58" Viera Plasma, it is simply breathtaking for gaming and streaming TV / movies. Well worth the $5k if you have it. :)

    Exceptional first post OP!

Same at video pro, I'm case that's better for some people, for some reason

Looks like the LG 2022 TV is coming soon (model c2)

  • +1

    Just a comment as a 77'' C1 owner.
You will need to block the sunlight during the day to watch it. Otherwise, the reflections on the screen will definitely kill the experience and make you wonder why you pay over 4k for a TV that you cannot watch during the day:(

    • +2

      Get some blockout blinds

    • Do you mean like direct sunlight? Or is it okay if it’s through a window (south facing) that still gets a reasonable amount of light?

  • So tempting! This or wait for the C2!?

  • Good deal they dont break $5K very often. Would love one but I promised myself I would hold off till 100" 8K OLED/micro LED is a thing and sub-10K

    • You'll be waiting minimum 5 year's

      • Yep at least. I have a decent Samsung 4K LED to hold me over until then.

        • +1

          I wish I had your patience…LMFAO
I currently have the Sony A90J but now tempted with QD-Oled technology from Sony and Samsung this year

    • We all are. Got a spot on the wall ready for it when that day comes.

  • price match at jb then AFTERPAY5 for extra 5%? could be had for $4.2k if you have access to 10% GC

    • How do you Price Match online orders at JB, (in order to use AFTERPAY5, which requires online ordering)?

  • Has this been the cheapest ever for this model in a year?

    • +6

I got it for around 4.8k during black friday.

As a 77 inch owner - do yourself a favour and get it if you have the space, it’s an amazing tv

      • great. what's your viewing distance (sofa to TV)? I have about 4m at the moment from my current 65"

  • +10

Just managed to price beat at my local Good Guys for $4,900 delivered on Monday.

    • Nice!

  • Is the 4 year repair plan for $479 a good addition to the purchase?

    • On TVs I have always got aftermarket warranty, people say they're a rip, I call it justifiable insurance, especially if you do not want to chase ACCC for 6 months.
I have had 2 TVs replaced with these warranties, my 55 inch ST Plasma developed a well known fault, I was given a 60 inch replacement and allowed to keep the 55. The 55 still works perfectly.
Then I had a 55 inch 4K 30HZ I paid 1700 for, all the diffusers started falling down leaving massive white spots on the screen, within a week I had a newer upgraded QLED 4K 60HZ VRR ALLM TV for $1300 and $400 store credit.
I've been lucky so it all depends on how much you can save on the TV purchase 1st off then try to haggle down the after market warranty.

      • Would something like this cover burn in do you think?

        • No, I highly doubt it BUT that's what I got my initial Plasma claim for, it was a well know IR issue.
IR you need to double check with the insurance company, if they will honor, it can be user error or actual panel, see if they will cover it.

        • Apparently the one offered by JB specifies it covers burn in, so pays to check.

    • I paid 400 something for our Sony 4K tv we bought years ago (4 years extra) from HN. Within a month left of the warranty expiring (think 4 years and 10/11 months in), issues started popping up. We called, after a bit of nudging (they tried to say no issues at first) they gave us like $3k credit straight up, upgraded to the OLED and I think it's worth it going forward.

      • Yeps bingo and I bet the too and fro wasn't a lengthy process. I also bet that the $400 has now paid for itself due to the newer OLED and upgraded TV you have.
This isn't an ACCC replacement, it is for people who want assurance to be able to get a replacement in a short amount of time.

Great tv, my partner hates the magic remote though as she finds it difficult to click the 'ok' button in the middle (since it scrolls as well) with nails. So if you have a partner with long nails, be prepared to hear about how crap the remote is daily.

  • Site now saying it's a Back Order. I didn't pull the trigger in time :/

Big purchase for me and was still thinking it over.

    • +2

      Back in stock.

      • Yeah I just saw its marked back in stock now. I'm guessing there wouldn't be much if it's gone from in-stock, to back-order then back in-stock.

    • It is showing as in stock for me. Hmm

  • +1

Was in stock when added to cart. On back order when I was checking out and then back in stock 30 min later. Pulled the trigger when it was back in stock. Fingers crossed it’s actually in stock. Great price.

  • +2

Just pulled the trigger after thinking about it since it was posted. Thanks for posting OP :)

  • $276 delivery fee for my metro address. Kind of works out to what I purchased mine for a few weeks ago from Harvey Norman for $5,290.

  • This was my dream TV. I would have loved to get a 77" for this price a couple of years ago.

But now the 83" LG OLED is out….

  • So close to pulling the trigger…. $446 for delivery to Cairns. Kinda breaks the deal for me.

    • +1

Try getting a price match at a local good guys or Harvey Norman. The price without delivery is amazing.

      • +1

Yeah, I'll give it a go tomorrow morning if this is still advertised. Hopefully I can get good guys to do it for 4900 like the guy further up.

  • Thinking of pulling the trigger on this one especially as it's showing free delivery to my location.
    Two questions:
    1) Are there any gift cards available for Good Guys/ JB in case I'm able to get a price match?
    2) The 4-year warranty for $ 470 - is it worth getting?

    • Not the warranty. The ACL covers you for around 5 years.

  • I went ahead and pulled the trigger on this today.

Can anyone recommend a good wall mount to go with this one? I'm not sure if my current one will be suitable or if I need a bigger one (current TV is 70inch but I cant remember what mount I bought).

  • Can't decide to buy this or if its worth spending the extra $2000 to get the 83 inch. Will I notice the size difference if I get the 77?

    • Depending on how far back you are sitting from the TV. Was contemplating the 77" vs 83" and got the latter instead for $6.6k as we are sitting about 3.5m away and it's perfect even for SDR contents.

      • The sofa will be about 2.9m away from the TV but I know that we do want that immersive cinema experience 🤔 I'll also be watching the TV from the kitchen so I'll probably will be getting the 83" 😆 bye bye money ahaha

    • If you have the space on your wall, and the extra $2k, go the 83". I love my 77", and it was a huge upgrade from 58", but I would love to have the 83". :)

      • Guess I'm spending the extra 2K XD My partner has been trying to convince me to buy the 83" and I'm been resistant til now 😆

  • This or the 75 inch qn800a if they were the same price?

    • I've been cross shopping similar TV's and it seems to come down to if you value the extra brightness or the better blacks more. If it's in a living area with lots of windows and daytime use then the brighter one will likely be the go, if you mostly use your tv in the evening or it's in a low light room the OLED probably wins. I'm leaning towards the 85" QN85 myself but waiting to see what prices do as both the 77" C1 and the 2021 Samsung panels are on the way out but it does appear they are managing stock pretty tightly so there may not be any big discounts to be had other than on the last of the floor stock.

  • Got mine yesterday. Very quick delivery.

    • Me too! Can't wait to put it up

    • Can u share me the receipt? I just missed the chance

  • can anyone share a receipt which I could use for a price match?
    Many thanks
