Tempted but seems like a gimmicky toy that would get played with once then packed away and never touched again.

I had one of these before, it will fun for a while and then it goes it into the toy box…

    STEM teacher here.

IMO the best early years robot is a Dash. Lego Boost is a good kit too.

For upper primary I'd definitely recommend LEGO Mindstorms - a super extensible kit that has lots and lots of replayability (right up to senior high school level with python).

If you can find a cheap EV3 second hand then they are still really well supported.

Spheros have/had the cool factor but I find quickly wear thin. At this price it's a decent buy but if your kid is actually interested in robotics hold off until you can get a LEGO kit as it combines engineering and programming with endless possibilities.

Thanks for sharing - I believe Mindstorms comes close to $400. This is, depending on how you value your Telstra points, perhaps $20 or $40. My 6 year old really loved Lego Boost (the original, not so much the StarWars version).

Thanks for sharing above however Boost/Mindstorms is quite expensive and my kids tend to misplace and loose their LEGO pieces so I am not keen to spend too much..!'ll see how it goes with the sphero and may consider Mindstorms once the kids grow older.

    • By Dash, do you mean this one:

Yep. The curriculum that is comes with is excellent (although requires basic literacy skills).

It's not as extensible as a LEGO kit in terms of building new things, but it comes with ultrasonic sensors (i.e. "if wall in front, stop"), directional microphones for audio input (turn to voice) and then motor outputs for drive base and head pan and tilt, oh and programmable LEDs for eyes and ears.

In terms of programming, it's a really fun robot. It has attachments for xylophone, ball launchers, pens and I think Lego.

        It's also gender neutral.

Kids love them. I've been using them since ~2015 with classes and still going well.

        • nice thanks for the post, I'd never heard of them.

    Excellent cat toy

  • Anyone still have the minis for $27 when Aus Geo/Coop were clearing over 2 years ago?

    • Sure do. Shake it a bit and it turns on to random / auto mode. Roll it past the cat and it'll chase it for a good 20 mins.

    Thanks OP!

$1 with my points. I previously redeemed the points for a bunch of Telstra Locators but Telstra later shut the service down and refunded the points.

  • Qs:

My child’s too young for coding but thinking of this as something for me to learn coding.
Any idea if this would be beneficial for an adult to start learning coding¿

Also.. have a Telstra subscription. Can anyone tell me what 17000 points equates to. Dollar wise or other..

    Thanks.

I can't answer your first question as this is my first time buying the product but i think this is targeted for children.

with the points question.. on the rewards site, Telstra is charging $5.95 or 2,500 points for delivery so based on this 17,000 points is $40.46.

  • Just received it.
Not sure if I'm just unlucky or Telstra is getting rid of really old stock that isn't compatible with the app anymore, but the firmware update fails.
Firmware update is the first thing the app tries to do when you connect to the Sphero, and if it doesn't update, you can't do anything else with it.

    • You might want to try it on a different phone. My date code is M001-RW2-20190904 and it updated fine on my S21.

    • i have just received mine and the firmware update worked fine although it seemed to be stuck at 100% for some time

    Sweet. Cost me $7.

    Many thanks op.
My boy and me will have hours of find with this gadget.
