Samsung Galaxy Nexus - Unlocked. $433.50 Shipped. Australian Stock

390
scooponspecial

Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster.
Found this while looking for a new phone for my girlfriend's birthday on whirlpool forums. (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1829010&p…)
Initial price is $449.00 but coupon brings it down to $433.50. Which seems like a pretty decent price for Australian stock since Kogan is selling it for $429 shipped with grey imports. Not entirely sure how long shipping will take but my guess is within a week.

He already mentioned that in his post, but $5 more is worth it for aussie stock.

For those traveling overseas in the next thirty days or buying for business use, the gst is refundable, which makes it an even better deal.

I think it is a bargain all the same but that is a fair question. Negging him for simply asking why is stupid.

        • I received my phone in an open box when I purchased from Kogan. Will never buy from Kogan again.

          Next time I'll go local.

Samsung and COTD both are shit for dealing with Warranty whilst I have heard only good things about Kogan doing on spot swaps under warranty so I'd be inclined to deal with Kogan….

  • shipping from COTD takes about 1-2 weeks

probably because they actually don't have stock and order once they get cash from customers. pretty low risk business operation imo

Poulsen8r > Negs get automatically removed when you post receives enough neg votes.

Why is it better to buy Australian stock?
Better warranty better support, the Kogan deal is a not original manufacturer warranty, this deal is.

You have a right to express that in your opinion this is not a bargain, But others have an equal right to invalidate your (wrong) opinion.

  • Just to add that the coupon is multi use. I have used it many times already.

    • does the coupon work on any other COTD sister sites?

it still goes to the same place to get fixed, regardless. fone zone. so it don't matter.

How was it that Mobileciti had a 2-year Samsung warranty for their AU stock while this only has 12 months?

  • +1

Actually I was the one that posted the original post on Whirlpool. Anyhow I can confirm that I odered on Saturday on Easter Long weekend and got it by Friday. So effectively 4 works days, since Monday was Easter Monday. (Ie. Tuesday - Friday). I am in Sydney However and as far as I am aware the phone was shipped from Melborune as that's where their warehouse is.

    Cheers

    • You say in Whirlpool forum that this is Telstra variant? Does that mean it has Telstra branding / software installed?

Also, updates come from Telstra, not Samsung / Google?

      • +1

one of the few things left to the nexus line's credit is no branding/bloatware. However, yeah, updates come via telstra, and people with telstra galaxy nexuses are still stuck on 4.0.1 or 4.0.2, while those who have the direct-from-google firmware known as 'yakju' are on 4.0.4.

        • What firmware will the Kogan supplied ones be capable of? I'm trying to discern whether to buy one from Kogan or COTD. Australian stock, delivery and warranty support currently seems very enticing.

        • +2

That is a good question. Where do the firmware updates for the Galaxy Nexus from Kogan come from? Samsung?

Grey import phones from Kogan may seem less attractive to some buyers but updates to firmware may arrive quicker. Rather than having to wait for Telstra to release firmware updates for the Galaxy Nexus from COTD.

I understand that all updates for this phone are OTA?

Kogan has shipped models of various firmwares, depending on where they could get stock from. Personally, the one I got from Kogan came with yakju, so I get updates direct from google. But other people on whirlpool have reported getting other firmwares as well.

As for customer service, Kogan dropped their price 2 days after I ordered mine. I rang up, and they were perfectly happy to refund me the difference. Which actually came through in a few days. They were under no obligation to do that, but they did anyway. So big ups from me.

edit: since all the hardware is the same though, any galaxy nexus phone, no matter what firmware it's shipped with, can have it's bootloader unlocked and the yakju firmware flashed on to it by the user if you're willing to muck around a little bit. There's heaps of good guides around.

I bought two Galaxy Nexus a few weeks back, one from MobileCity and the other from Kogan.
The handset from MobileCity is Australian stock and have the Android version 'yakjudv' while the one from Kogan (not Australian stock, not sure where it's from) have the Android version 'yakju'. After a few days of turning on the Nexus from Kogan, the Android OS is updated to 4.0.4, while the one from MobileCity is stuck on 4.0.1 version.

I'm not saying one is better than the other, at the end of the day it's personal preference whether you prefer to have the latest version of Android.

Also, I've read on the review on Kogan's website that they shipped the DoCoMo version of Galaxy Nexus, but I got mine the I9250 version.

        • Thanks for the advice here, I guess I'll get a Kogan one. :)

    $399 in two weeks? :)

    • +1

You're not one of those are you? ;)

      • +4

Google just started selling direct in the US for 399. So chances are that it will drag global prices down as well.

      • .

    • Yeah, better to hold off with Samsung SGSIII coming soon. Should push down prices further.

  • +2

good deal but i am waiting for the galaxy s III that will be announced on Friday. The brightness on galaxy nexus is too low

    • friday?

      • +2

yea it will be mid night on Friday, about 3am or something

        • -6

thanks man, and what exactly is happening just announcing the date or what?
also you got anything on the next iphone?

      • http://www.thenextgalaxy.com/ here is the official website of the announcement date. 7pm thursday in London, so its gonna be like 3 am in australia

  • im in the market for one and the Australian stock is really tempting, but think i will wait until the sgs3 is released as the price of the sgs2 and the nexus should drop.

    • +2

That is like in 3 months, if you keep waiting for phone price to drop, you will never get a phone

      • No people its expected Samsung will put the SGS3 to market shortly after the announcement, so by the end of May….

        • +1

it will for sure, samsung has promised that gs3 will be on sale in the fisrt half 2012

        • -3

It can't go for sale so early. Think about it, to be able to sell by end of May, they would have to have stockpiled thousands of these phones already by now. But if that's the case, why is there no leak about the phone's specs? There are so many workers, one of them must leak. The fact that there's no leak only means the phone hasn't been sent for mass production yet.

      • i think they are going to release it for the London Olympic as official Olympic phone.
Make sense since they are doing the announcement in London.
So i am expecting this phone in around mid to late June.
I mean all the hype about an iphone5 last year and it turn out to be a joke.
You should expect the worst if you dont want to be disappointed.

        • Possibly, since Samsung is official sponsor:
          http://www.olympic.org/sponsor-samsung

But release date is anybody's guess. But sooner than later. Certainly not 3 months away.

The pattern for recent releases from Samsung is within 1-2 months of announcement date.

        • Even if it is the official phone for the Olympics it doesn't mean they can't release it in May.

Yes in the past they have delayed it being on the shelf for 1-2 months after announcement, but everyone is expecting them to go against this and do a more Apple-like strategy of releasing it shortly after announcement approach…
