Drive a Large SUV? Forget High Fuel Prices You Might Have a New Problem

News reaches Australian shores of a new enemy of the polluting SUV.
Tyre Extinguishers might be targeting you, so best to lock your gas-guzzling baby away safely at night.
Will this really be a thing here with all the cameras & home security everywhere?
Time will tell I guess.

What happens when people die from climate change disasters? If only we could charge those in government for murder based on some of their irresponsible actions.

  • -2

People say that you're what you eat. It 👀 like greenies are eating too much 🥬 making their 🧠 into 🍲.

  • +2

So you are part of the problem by propagating the article.

    • I just assumed it was OPs website tbh

    • Do you use it? What’s the feedback?

    massive, unnecessary vehicles

Why is it that I know the type that will do this.

The same type that complain about rising house prices and stagnating wages yet only have a casual job at the local cafe. The same type that don't want to work but expect to live like a king.

    • -1

Why is it that I know the type that will do this.

Pssst … what do you drive?
Tell us please … tell us how big, powerful, intimidating and lifted it is!

      • +1

Found the type Sprinter99 is referencing.

      • I don't actually drive a car. I have a motorbike.

        But go on.

    • To be fair, rising house prices are a problem for more than just the people who have a casual job at the local cafe.

      • This is true!

    • -1

Had to do so,etching with is after pumping out piles of shit for so long. Seems only fitting to make toilet paper there.

We have an SUV and a small car. We use the small car as often as possible for schools runs, shops, etc. We use the SUV when we need to drive 5-7 people or for transporting large items and building/landscaping supplies that takes a second car or a truck off the road. Yes there are times when we drive the SUV with only one or two people but we try to minimise this as much as possible. I wonder if these people have considered the advantages of SUVs?

    • +3

I had an argument in UK about this from distant family. They were upset about SUV / 4x4s ownership - I explained that in Australia due to work and living in a regional area it goes off road several times per year, often several times one weekend, tow heavy loads up to 3500kg, and we couldn't travel how we do in one car with everything and everyone in it - but they don't get it.
Living their whole life in London, they had no relative understanding. We also have a 4 cyl car that gets used to run to the shops and school run etc, but apparently that wasn't important either!?
I get that some people don't do this with their SUV, but plenty do use them legitimately that have interests in regional areas.

      • +1

Some people buy them for status. Others actually use them.

Greenies in Germany hand out BBQ ligting blocks and lighters. Provided for free from the new pollies driving a fortified Mercedes at 3,5 tons weight.
Place on top of a tyre, light and walk away.
France has already been "cleaned up" from non guarded SUV's.

Albo making a deal with the Barra/Biden couple: Only new electrified Hummers for his upcoming staff!

  • +1

Reading through their site it states that even EV's are fair game. The reason they state is that there is not enough rare earth minerals and tyres and brakes produce pollution.

We have barely gotten a fraction of a percent through the earth's crust. So plenty of minerals, just got to dig deeper and I don't really think punishing people that are trying to do better is a reasonable thing at all. Would be a ideal world if we could all walk to work but Australia hasn't been designed with that in mind.

    • +5

But “normal cars are ok”. Apparently normal cars don’t have tyres and brake pads and contribute 0 to CO2 emissions.

      • yep… normal cars.

        Troll site of the week.

  • People that buy large fuel guzzling cars are already prepared to pay more for fuel, so it’s no issue.

They can obviously afford it, why else would they buy those 4WWs?

    • +2

why else would they buy those 4WWs?

To go traveling or offroading away from the scrotes…?

    • +1

There were many reasons I've chosen to buy 4x4's over the years, but "because I can afford to waste more fuel" wasn't ever really one of them.

  • +1

I don't believe it for a second. Most likely made up by 4chan trolls who want to make the news or start another culture war by making bs up and then have a good lol about it.

But it will be lapped up with zero scrutiny by the Sky News after dark crew who will use it to attach "the left" and "greens" just like some people have already done here.

    • +1

Bingo. I can't believe 99% of the OzBargain community have swallowed such an obvious troll. We'd probably have a decent government if people didn't get so easily riled up over made-up nonsense.

  • +2

Don't most Karen's drive an SUV.

  • -7

    Where is the lie?

SUVs are a climate disaster: Because SUVs are bigger and heavier than other cars, they are more polluting and use more fuel.
SUVs cause air pollution: Larger cars belch out more toxic fumes, worsening air pollution in our town and cities.
SUVs are dangerous: SUVs are much more likely to kill compared to normal cars when striking pedestrians.
SUVs are unnecessary: They exist purely for the vanity of their owners, who see them as a status symbol.

    • -3

I buy a car to protect me… Not others.

      • +2

…and that's a huge problem with SUVs. Bad drivers who buy them for their own safety and increase the risk of injury to others. Not saying you're a bad driver - I find the attitude selfish and problematic, especially when coupled with the number of bad SUV drivers.

      • Thanks for flagging yourself as a psychopath mate. Get help

    • Exist purely as a status symbol?

      Okay.

  • -4

Dual cab utes can be the target here.

Easier to see past them with flat tyres too, win win.

  • +4

Large SUVs are unsafe for pedestrians vs lower and smaller cars, as are large trucks, also bad for environment.

But geez… not the way to go about changing the hearts and minds. What a stupid idea.

    • -2

The counterpoint is that SUVs are safer for passengers.

    • +2

Older low tech large SUVs are unsafe, but generalising all SUVs as unsafe is wrong.
Most new SUVs have technologies like pedestrian detection with automatic emergency breaking and crash/crumple zones specifically designed to minimize injuries to pedestrians. And the elevated driving position can help with visibility in urban areas.

Now lets look at some numbers

      • In Australia the number of SUV sales overtook passenger cars only in 2017
      • ANCAP included AEB and lane keep assistance in safety ratings from 2015, and they became mandatory for a 5 star rating in 2018
      • The average age of a registered vehicle in Australia is 10 years.

Therefore statistically speaking, an average SUV is newer therefore has better safety tech (that could protect pedestrians) than an average passenger car on the road.
If you want to hate unsafe cars then hate ALL OLD vehicles, not just SUVs.

      • +2

Center of gravity. You can put all the tech inside but you can't magically change center of gravity.

People drive SUVs in town because they can see over regular sedans and hatch backs. Unfortunately when everyone drives an SUV it is back to the status quo. Problem with SUVs is smaller cars can't see around past you. Imagine trying to over take on a two lane road. But then it is someone else's problem.

      • You honestly think a 2500kg SUV with AEB is safer? lol
The list of things it mightn't be able to recognise:

Pedestrians shorter than 1m or taller than 2m (ie kids)
Pedestrians wearing oversized clothing (raincoat), making their silhouette obscure
Pedestrians carrying large baggage, holding an umbrella (etc.) hiding part of their body
        Pedestrians bending forward or squatting
Groups of pedestrians who are extremely close together
Pedestrians wearing white, who look extremely bright
Pedestrians in the dark (eg. at night, or in a tunnel)
Pedestrians whose clothing appears to be nearly the same colour/brightness as their surroundings
Pedestrians near walls, fences, guardrails or large objects
Pedestrians standing on a metal object like a manhole cover
Pedestrians walking fast, or abruptly changing their speed
Pedestrians walking out from behind a vehicle or large object

The division and attacks in this threads like this is the reason that site was created.

  • +3

Geez would love to get an SUV just to setup the trap for these twats lol.

  • +2

Noooo not the factory air!! Leave it in there! OEM tyre air is hard to come by these days!

    • +1

Genuine GM air for those Arcadia's has to come from Walkinshaw now

  • +2

    According to these lunatics:

Hybrids and electric cars are fair game.

I can't wait to see videos of these mofos getting roughed up by the owners of the vehicles they have attempted to vandalise.

  • they wont be targeting hybrid rav4's so all good

    • +1

Given they show a picture of a Rav4 as a valid target you think these morons would care that yours is a hybrid?

      • +1

Agreed. The Rav4 Hybrid is on both targeted lists, the SUV list and the EV/hybrid list.

      • +1

The one pictured is the hybrid version.

        Twats

    • +1

might want to read on…. "Hybrids and electric cars are fair game".

  • Can you do this to run flats?

    • +1

of course, just slightly less inconvenient. Run flats when deflated mean you have to drive much slower and you still need to get them inflated relatively soon to avoid damaging them. Really most of them are designed to just let you limp to a service station or Tyre place to get them fixed/inflated.

  • +2

There's a fruit loop here somewhere on OzB who always comments on SUV related posts to the effect of "why would anyone drive an SUV". I'm sure they would love this.

  • +2

Whoever made that site has no clue about cars.
    Their site says

To make it impossible to own a huge polluting 4x4 in the world’s urban areas

Yet most of the photos in the “how to spot an SUV” shows medium to small SUVs that are probably 2WD. One even has a tiny Nissan Juke! Seriously ? That is probably the worst example one can pick to build a case against SUVs LOL. A Nissan Juke like the one pictured on the site has a combined fuel consumption figure of just 5.6l/100km which is less than something like a 2010 Toyota corolla 1.8L!, A Juke also weighs less than a 4 door Corolla sedan, and has a smaller footprint as its shorter! Due to all the curves and round shape a Juke may even have a better drag coefficient than an old corolla!.

There are also lot of EV,PHEV and Hybrid SUVs. In fact there is a PHEV model of the Volvo XC90 that looks exactly like the one pictured on the site, and Volvo is bringing an all electric XC90 that will look very similar to the market pretty soon, are they bad for the environment too??.

So whats the rational here ? And what about all the large sedans with big V6/V8 engines like commodores and falcons that are much heavier, larger and consume a lot more fuel than a tiny Juke?

  • +1

I already mentioned this in my previous comment, but ofc it goes whoosh over peoples heads

    https://shorturl.at/rCNZ0

Or even cheaper at Aliexpress and other similar chinese websites.

  • +1

Lol, so many jokers. These guys are just simply cowards - the biggest polluters are militaries - tanks, fighter jets, heavy trucks you name a few, I dare them to go to deflate a tank or fighter jets or these facilities…picking up legally sold and purchased civilian use cars/trucks is just Greta the Green on steroids. Anything goes to extreme will not only be stupid but deadly…

  • These are like the dumb activist c**ts that we have at uni

  • -1

Not a shocker that this is being signal boosted by an account called “cashless”. Low effort.

    • -1

It’s on record that “cashless”, by no means a prolific poster, appears to have offered up a few more deals than fat zero.
      Poor effort.

  • +3

They do not know the difference between a "huge polluting 4x4" and a "Large SUV".

No pictures of actual real 4x4's… you know, all the ones that seem to tail gate and have tradie gear in them :).

The pictures they've used show cars that have better fuel economy than a lot of sedans.

They are also hypocrites by including "Hybrids and electric cars are fair game".

So in a nutshell not only nut jobs, but not very clever nut jobs.

  • +1

Surely this is a joke…..as UFO said above, the cars they have listed are not exactly fuel guzzlers.

Maybe they should come to OZ. The vast majority of proper 4WDs never get offroad. Too expensive to risk scratching.

I own a 4WD but live in an area where I do need it. (work in the mountains, snow in winter and often have to use 4WD only fire roads in summer) However, I could just as easily do with a Subaru for 95% of the activities and simply avoid the others by looking for alternate methods. Any other time is really recreational and could happily change my activities if I wanted to be a better person.

  • +1

Self righteous idiots. Nothing different from those vegans protesting in Melbourne streets/supermarkets, attacking farms.
People buy what they want…no one should have any business about others business unless it is unlawful.

    • vacuous. it is other people's business if they're unable to safely use streets because you're selfishly farting around in a Toorak Tractor like you own the place

      • -1

Driving an SUV does not mean others around are automatically unsafe. To make others unsafe, all we need is stupid people like you with holier than thou attitude.

        • -1

truly the dumbest, most illogical thing I've ever read.

  • I have a compressor built in to my 4x4, so less of an issue. However if I catch said person pulling this sh!t, I will make use of the 4x4 ability and will make sure their body will never be found.

  • a) I have an onboard compressor.

    b) good luck leaning over to deflate my tyres with a broken nose.

  • +1

Awkward moment when they deflate a Rav4 Hybrid, and walk on by any other car.

also not going to lie, the government's policies on subsidising large tradie vehicles while making it un competitive for electric vehicle companies has really kept Australia in the dark ages and led us to be the dumping ground.

Also all the more reason to buy a battery inflator off ebay/aliexpress :)
And the irony that many of the 4wd owners will have a compressor on them.
    Thwarted

  • +1

My i40 diesel consumes 7-8L/100km and my mates Prado consumes 10L/100km. SUV's with 4 cyclinders aren't that un-economical.

    • you're missing the point - it's about building cities where everyone doesn't need a car

  • What are they on? I bet if they do drive it's old vehicles that are far worse than a modern SUV. Besides, all cars produce CO/CO2, seems they are just jealous of those more affluent than themselves -_-

  • +1

What a bunch of nutters. I wonder how many of them are anti-vaxxers…

  • Pretty obvious this is a joke. Look at the how to page: "Drop a small bean (we like green lentils, but you can experiment with couscous…"
