  • Is this the cheapest 8tb HD?

    • +2

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/185157152382?

$165.66 if you don't mind SMR.

      • +3

FYI For about 8.5 cents more you can buy from more reputable sellers than HT ;)

        • +3

Oh please, HT didn't fulfil a clear price error that many people knew was a price error and now they get all the hate

          • +3

@JoeBogan: I don't know which one you're referring to specifically, but I had my own issues with them in the past. In any case, their feedback is 97.2% while other sellers are at almost 100%.

            • -1

@RiseAndRuin: That negative rating was because of the coupon code debacle on eBay, I've bought about 6 different things from them in the last year and I've had no issues.

              • @JoeBogan: Buyers are free to make their own choice, I'm just stating the facts and referring to my own experience.

                • @RiseAndRuin: That's a bit of a straw man argument, I never said buyers aren't free to make their own choice. I just weighed in to give people a more balanced viewpoint on the issue.

          • +4

@JoeBogan: Hmm so a $15 coupon with no min spend that could be used repeatedly by checking out as a guest from a private window wasn't fulfilled. That one was pretty obvious and people still got upset even after redeeming their free premium antivirus codes because their 20 other freebies were cancelled the next day.

            • @jaffar: At some point, you have to just be taking the piss. HT is well within their rights to pull the pin on what is clearly and error. Ive used HT for Maybe 20 years and they have always been very easy to deal with.

  • Why do all these companies sell on ebay? Aren't the fees ridiculous on there?

    • +1

Their prices on eBay are usually higher than their direct website prices as a result of the fees but when you get these big discount codes that are covered by ebay you get some good deals sometimes.

    • +1

The fees would be tax deductible for a business.

    • +3

The same reason companies sell on shopping malls. Selling on eBay is better for visibility.

  • For those without Afterpay, this can be had for $206 from Amazon US via Amazon AU.

    • +3

It's $197 including the shipping from Umart (local stock). See

      • +1

        True, but some prefer Amazon.

Drives seem to be falling in price now, as well. Hoping they don't shoot up soon.

      • I bought a couple of them last week from Umart when they had $30 off if you used Klarna to checkout. Including delivery, they worked out at $179 each.

    • +1

Still $189 @ PLE (pending stock)

  • I thought only WD Red Plus HDDs were CMR. Wouldn’t have spent the extra $80 if I had known!!!

    • +3

Please be aware not all WD Blue's are CMR. There exists SMR WD Blue's as well.

Cross-check the product brief and model name before buying.

      • Thanks for the warning. Makes me feel a little better.

      • It appears as though the 8tb is the only CMR blue drive, though.

      • Can you confirm if this one is CMR?

        • +4

          How to confirm

Visit the WD web page, select Disk Speed and Capacity

          https://www.westerndigital.com/en-au/products/internal-drive…

Scroll down a bit or press CTRL+F to find "Recording Technology".

You will see a list of SKU's that use CMR or SMR. Scroll down further and you can expand the "Full Specifications" tab to see even more data.

  • Good price for an 8TB CMR drive.

    5640 RPM

That's a fairly arbitrary rotation speed; maybe typical of WD blues?

    • Currently this 8TB drive is the only Blue drive with this odd rotation speed.

      • +1

Likely it's mechanically identical to another 7200rpm sku and they've intentionally capped the max RPM.

  • WD80EAZZ = CMR

  • 5640 rpm lol

    • +4

If you're getting an 8TB hard drive, the use case is more likely for archiving or storage. RPM/Speed is far less relevant in this case.

      • +1

More so it will be abt platters vs speed. I'd say more platters which offset speed.

  • Good for Nas duties? Only looking at running daily from noon to midnight.

  • All gone =/
