Do You Order UberEATS/Deliveroo or Do You Just Pick It up from The Restaurant?

Hi everyone, me and my partner we were having a discussion about how much more people pay ordering through Ubereats/deliveroo etc…

Me and her we did food delivery during pandemic as both of us lost our jobs and had to get income. We were surprised about the prices on the receipts, some people paid like $40 for something that if they simply picked it up, it would be like half of it.

We are a very economical couple, we control our expenses really well, but we also enjoy our money.

But when it comes about ordering takeaway, we refuse to pay the final delivery price. i.e: a burrito on guzman y gomez is like 10 bucks. While in the app it would be something around $15+$4/$5 delivery fee+ service fee. which would be pretty much double of the price.

We only use delivery services if we have some voucher or discount.

How do you all think when it comes about ordering takeaway?

I can’t get my Ultimate Eats gift card to work on Menu Log ir Deliveroo, do you have any info on this? I’d like to use it for pick up as the card was 20% off.

  • when i didn't have a license, i got uber eats / menu log / deliveroo, but i have one now and it's much cheaper to pick it up myself.

often the prices for the food in the app are a few dollars more expensive (say a burger costs 8 dollars from the restaurant to eat in / pick up yourself, on the app its usually 12 dollars etc), on top of the delivery fee. the places i order from are not too far away, so even considering the price of petrol, it's cheaper to go get it myself.

the only problem is finding somewhere to park

I used to order A LOT to be honest, prices I saw were quite similar where I am so most of the time it wasn't too much of an issue. A big thing about it though is the time saved on waiting, paying a few bucks so I don't have to wait for the order, travel, pickup, deal with the restaurant etc was a big convenience.

I will say though that i stopped a lot of ordering when the service fee came in, largely as I used to give that amount to tip the driver, but now it becomes a bit much with tip as well.

So I largely only order because I really want something, and usually when its related to a want as opposed to a need I'll splurge a little and pay that extra for a meal. Essentially as I'm ordering takeaway I'm expecting to splurge anyway.

Ubereats doesn't show discounts on their receipts so the customer may have paid less than that.

  • How come Uber Eats ads now feature people being incompetent? Is that their target market?

You pay for the convenience. If you get delivery you don't have to change out of the rags you wear around the house, drive to wherever, especially with fuel prices at an all time high, find somewhere to park, wait, drive back without spilling anything, go back in and change clothes again then eat. Plus you can also factor in the weather such as having to go out in the cold/heat/rain. There's also the argument for how much you value your own time. If it takes you 30min to go and pick up, what's that 30min worth to you?

Anyone who values their time highly wouldn't be hanging around OzBargain forums.

Anyone who values super fresh and piping hot food generally wouldn't be using ubereats.

      • feeling worthless😥

      • I'm sure most like myself are being paid to sit in front of a computer. For many years now we've had the ability to have multiple windows open.

    • Yep. get the point of paying for convenience+time saving.
In my case as I am a low/middle income earner, my time still not worth that much, but it definitely must be taken in consideration the amount of time saved

Used ubereats once, used my $30 discount code, won't be using them again.

  • With all the extra charges now on delivery, no way I’m ordering through the apps

  • +1

only order when discounts - doordash $15 referral x 3
uber eats $30 off first order

never paid full price for a meal

  • I'll use their codes but I always pick up.

Only order in times of need (really tired or sick).

Yes, I use the delivery but only with referrals, codes, discounts and free trial premium subscriptions - which we cycle pretty effectively. Huge convenience! Sometimes I’ll order as I’m heading home from my work and husband is looking after our kid. Sometime we’ll be working in the garden or playing in the pool instead of cooking or picking up takeaway. That run of uber grocery discounts worked out pretty well too. It’s not that much more expensive and sometimes is cheaper if you use various ways to get discounts.

I only use ubereats/deliveroo when I cant leave the house (eg. home alone with sleeping child).

Otherwise delivery + service fee + bullshit fee + cold chip fee + ubercharge fee + surcharge + this new weeks fee just makes it too much. I'm lazy, but I am a tightarse.

Plus, I'll always call up my order direct to the restaurant to make sure uber doesnt get a clip of the ticket by ordering via uber eats and as much as possible goes to the restaurant in question.

Pick-up only. A great local burger joint charges $14-$16 per burger via UberEats, delivery fees on top and the delay on delivery results in soggy fries and cold burgers.

I now call ahead for take-away, make the 5 minute drive, park, pay $9.90 per burger, and am home enjoying my burger and ~$20-$30 savings depending on the size of the order.

  • I only ever use those apps if they have given a decent discount code that will work out less than buying it direct from the shop it’s self (including their mark up) and i pick it up.

  • Frugal: call restaurant and pick it up yourself
Even more frugal: cook it yourself

But seriously with all the fees and inflated pricing you end up paying 1.5x to 2x of what it would normally cost for the "convenience".
Then you play the waiting game of when/if the driver is going to turn up with your soggy food.

During the pandemic I only used Uber Eats because people gave me vouchers as gifts.
Otherwise there were lots of restaurants doing the "we are delivering to your suburb on Xday" with free delivery with minimum order amount which we used on a few occasions. At least then you are paying normal pricing and the restaurant was getting the full cut.

  • It really depends for me. I milked the 3 month Deliveroo Plus trial as the food was the same price as if I would have gone to pick up myself, without all the time and effort required.

Sometimes if you've worked a 12 hour day, it's easy to justify the near doubled cost (at times) and long wait times of ordering through these apps. Other times when you've got it in you it makes sense to make your own way to pick up your food.

Even with $2+ petrol and driving a Falcon, it's cheaper by a fair bit to drive and pick up food.

  • Do You Order UberEATS/Deliveroo or Do You Just Pick It up from The Restaurant?

I either eat at the restaurant, or cook at home…

  • I first got Uber Eats when I was given a $20 code to use.
Since then, I've only ever ordered it if in lockdown or if it's 40 degrees outside.
My local J's Kitchen sells their meals for $25 on the app but it's $15 dine in or take away.

  • Where there's decent promo codes and it's nearby <5km. Also when I know it's a popular restaurant, to bypass the queues.

      thanks buddy, appreciate it 😊

I refuse to order from delivery apps because of the amount they take from the restaurants (I believe in the region of 30%), and because of this unethical behaviour in listing restaurants without the owner's knowledge or consent.

Most of the restaurants raise their delivery menu prices to account for this

      • Another reason not to use the apps, inflation.

  • +1

Because there are a lot of lazy people out there, over spending without self discipline, without the capacity to plan their budget, and these people shout loudly "it's takes too long to save a deposit for my first home blah blah blah"
