Premium Unleaded 98 Fuel $1.959/L @ 7-Eleven Dandenong, Victoria

4070

No exactly the best deal if you can still use 91. But my car needs 95 and right now 98 seems to be a bit cheaper.

But overall petrol prices are dropping right now so hang in if you can..

  • how much more efficient is 98 vs e10?

    • Someone did logs comparison on whirlpool. I suppose around 10%

      • +14

Would only be efficient if the car was tuned for higher octane, other you are paying for expensive fumes with no gain.

        • +1

100% agree. I have driven a Toyota Echo with 98 fuel, and seen 10% further km in a tank of fuel, and notable improvement in engine performance. Tried the same thing in a 2006 V6 Commodore, and 2015 vf V8 Commodore and seen no difference. The key difference here is the Toyota was clearly designed to work with higher RON
Fuel, and on 91 it was wasteful. There is no 1 size fits all calculation.

          • @Jonseey: Very interesting, I have a Toyota Echo and I notice the exact same thing! People think I'm crazy when I say there's a difference especially for such an economical car..

      • +3

        cool thanks
        hard to find real numbers.
in my experience. it does seem to be a bit better.
5-10% seems possible based on my trials but hard to no whats due to petrol and what is just different driving conditions.
Not sure how it converts to city driving stuck in traffic vs high way driving.

But when the difference in cost is <10c (~5%) i do wonder

        • +4

          .3 L per 100 on a trip to Sydney

          4.1% better fuel economy

Went there with 98 came back with e10.

Full tank got me there and back. Just.

I did stop with 98. E10 just did a straight drive.

          Car requires 95 min.

          E10 94

I think 5% is very realistic for highway driving

          • @Korban Dallas: Any experience with city driving.

            • -7

@gimli: City to North Sydney and return on Kluger M-F

              E10: 27L/100KM
              98: 14L/100KM

YMMV but that's what I got after 3 tanks of each and skip the swap tank. No E10 incentive here but 98 seems more value and responsive than 91 especially on amber light. By saving a few cents and get caught on red light might worth the gap between 91 & 98.

              • @dlovep: wow that's huge.
What do you mean by amber light?

                • @gimli: Yellow light… on a traffic light.

              • +1

                @dlovep: Impossible.

                • @Pratty: that's what I got from my DASH info, like I said it's my case, you don't have to trust me, test it yourself.

E10 I need to fill up every 3 weeks, 98 it's close to 4~5 weeks, go figure yourself.

          • +2

@Korban Dallas: Going somewhere and coming back is not the same. Maybe one way is downhill more.
I do 20 minutes to go work and 25 to come back, literally the same roads

            • +1

@nikoris: Looked at the graph. Seems a little easier going there.

There was not much traffic both ways.

@Korban Dallas: Should you be using E10 if your car needs 95+?

        • +1

          Placebo effect at its finest.

          • @nikoris: Nah mate has had finer days

          • +1

@nikoris: I thought E10 was even less efficient than 98, why would it be a placebo effect?

            • @TEER3X: If your car is tuned for e10, then it will be as efficient as using 98. Except 98 will be more expensive

        • +1

I used fuelly.com to track my driving. Mazda 3, 2012. E10 one tank, 100% city. U98 next tank, 100% city. No difference. I keep switching out e10 every 3-4 tanks, at the bottom of the fuel cycle, to keep testing. Same results. I've tracked 60,000kms. I can share stats if you dm me.

      • Yep, i was getting around 10% more from my ford focus when using ron 98. However, interestingly, i didnt see any benefit in the first fill using ron 98 but would see a benefit on the second fill onwards.

    • +2

dont think theres any real increase in km’s. at least in my experience. just better for engine

      • What’s better? Putting higher octane than the engine is designed for?

    • +2

I think you'll find it's not just about efficiency when comparing E10 to 95/98 petrol. The components in your vehicle will deteriorate far quicker with E10.

      • +8

Would love to hear science behind these claims.

        • +12

Plenty of science documented online. Ethanol attacks and breaks down rubber and plastic over time so if your fuel system contains any of those materials it can cause issues down the line. Ethanol also absorbs water so if it’s left for a while this can cause issues as well.

          • +1

            @vodamerc:

            Plenty of science documented online.

            Such as?..

          • @vodamerc: I only have metal in my tank. Unless you're driving with plastic pistons and injectors.

            • +2

@nobro25: I thought injectors were mostly plastic?

            • +1

@nobro25: Fuel lines (low pressure) are rubber. In-tank fuel filter housing is also plastic on many late models, which also have gaskets that are rubber. There are also a lot of late model plastic fuel tanks.

        • +6

It used to be true. E10 caused deterioration in seals/gaskets in older cars when first introduced. The materials were never designed for it. The resulting s-storm hit the reputation of e10 hard & it persists to this day.

Modern cars however, do not suffer the same problems, so unless you are driving a classic, e10 should be fine. Most cars that can accept e10 these days have it written on/near the fuel cap or in the glovebox manual.

The main downsides of e10 other than slightly lower efficiency is it stores poorly & if the fuel is contaminated the blending agents cause water to distribute through the fuel instead of settling out at the bottom.

          • @mitt: I've heard E10 is no good for pre 1986 cars and anything with a carburettor (lawmowers), about 5% less efficient and has no actual benefits.

It is a complete mystery to me why it even exists. What is its point?

            • +1

@prodrome: Yeah not really any point, it's usually not cheap enough to justify the increased fuel usage compared to unleaded petrol. E85 on the other hand is a different story.

        • Us government did some trials. Said that 98 while cost more would be better for their fleet.

Can't remember where I found it but scholar if you wanna go all search

          https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=high…

      • +1

Engines these days are made to run on it. Also proof please.

      • even a 2010 commodore runs e85 , let alone e10

    • +1

I thought that 100% petrol was ~3% more energy dense than E10.

    • +1

E10 contains 10% ethanol. Ethanol is about 30% less energy dense than unleaded petrol, which means more fuel needs to be injected compared to unleaded petrol. This is the case regardless of what the octane rating e.g. 91, 95 vs E10. E10 is typically not worth it as it's usually not cheap enough compared to 91 to justify the increased fuel usage. Side note: Only use the octane rating that the manufacturer specifies for the car. There is 0 point going higher, you won't get more power or efficiency unless the car is specifically tuned for it, the octane rating just determines how resistant the fuel is to pre-ignition (knock). Of course if 98 is cheaper than 95 then you may as well.

      • If i follow what you are saying:
If the fuel has the max 10% ethanol then it is potentially 3% less energy then equivalent 91.
This 3% would probably explain much of the differences (i think) I see with 98 vs e10 in terms of more miles.

    • +10

      What does this mean

      • +5

Only Robert Langdon can solve this mystery

      • +4

I think he's trying to say he'd rather pay for 95 @12c/l higher than $1.99.9 vs this deal.

Dunno I'm taking myself to the hospital to get this anneurism checked.

      • +1

that I'd rather go to somewhere where I can get 95 petrol for $2.11 than somewhere I can only get 98 for $2.21!

        • +1

          Okay, thank you for sharing

    • £19.91¹.⁹ⁿᶦⁿᵉ <> €1.99.9₉.₉ᵖʳᵉᵐᶦᵘᵐ⁹⁹

if ur talking about 91 petrol being cheaper at $1.919 at Shell near Eastlink (Victoria). Then sure you can go fuel there.

But I shared this post for people with choppers from other states who need either 95 or 98 (some cars cant use below 95) and may not have as cheap prices near them right now

      • 91 is currently $1.87

  • It's still $2 for 91 in Brisbane so not bad

  • +16

Petrol prices. Rises like a rocket and drops like a feather.

    • +10

      which is lighter
1kg of rockets or 1kg of feathers? :P

      • +6

        1kg of brains

        The feathers.

      • -1

        Here's a real brain teaser!
        Which is lighter
1kg Nitrous Oxide or 1kg of solid carbon dioxide (dry ice).

Any ozsis or bro can teach me how can i share the location from iFakeLocation at MacBook pro to iPhone ?
    Much appreciate .

    • +2

I have no idea about iFakeLocation but 3utools is still working well, just plug in your phone and modify the virtual location.

      • because i dont have wire to plug in phone and MacBook..

      • I tried this out and found it to be a hunk of junk. iFakeLocation is open sourced and way easier to use.

186.9 for special unleaded at 7-11 in forrestdale, WA.

  • -6

Not a deal, has been far cheaper 😂

    • +3

Do you have a time machine or something?

      • +2

It was a joke…. Literally the comment on nearly every deal haha. Everything was cheaper at some point right? Hence I didn’t neg, as it’s a joke.

        • +1

Bit hard to tell when some people are like this unironically. Maybe put a /s to make it obvious for stupid people like me

      • Does the time machine you used to visit us OldGerry only take you to the future?

  • +5

Based on previous fuel discussions, it seems many aren't aware of the ACCC website that informs you about fuel price trends:

    https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/petrol-diesel-lpg/petrol-p…

Different states often have very different trends and patterns, which is why OzBargain comments on price trends can be confusing. Events in Europe have temporarily created a universal effect and the last increase felt more like Perth countrywide with pretty sharp increases everywhere at once. Normally you have a day or two to get cheaper prices at a Metro or Budget in non-Eastern Suburbs Sydney but there wasn't much buffer space this time from already high prices.

  • Can someone please link me a noob guide for the chopper and how to use the fuel lock (Android), thanks

  • what app is this OP using?

  • U98 - 191.7 - Costco Adelaide

TGP for U91 is 187.7 at the moment, so people most have higher octanes they need to be rid of.

    • 91 there is 181.7 so either they're losing money or bought it when it was much lower

      Amazing prices though

  • +4

DM me (within the next hour) if you need assistance with your chopper.

    • +1

Chopper assists are finished. Off to work to pay for my fuel.

  • +1

Will be locking for the next 20minutes. send me your deets.

  • idk how to do the chopper thing and I'm not fussed enough to learn right now anyways, but I am gonna pull through Dandy tomorrow by coincidence so I might lock it in, what was the price of just normal 91 if you remember? May decide between the Packy or Dandy way home, cheers.

    • +1

U91 at Dandenong is 195.9c/l atm

      • +1

Beautiful. There's a few 199's near me, I'll remember if I end up going that way but otherwise eh, few cents diff. But nah, cheers for the quick response my man!

  • +1

98 got me better mileage and i feel great too

    • +2

I don’t think you should be drinking it…

      • probably drinking the e10 they didn't use.
don't think 98 would make u feel good.

  • I'm in Queensland. Would it work if I go hopped on a a Victorian chopper?

    • +2

Just hop on any chopper. Doesn’t matter where from.

      • That's sick. Will be doing that from now on. Thanks.

  • going to go now and fill up my xr6 turbo which is tuned for 98
been driving other cars lately because of the prices

  • Not cheap as last time, but thanks for sharing
