  • Just got a Wuben C2. Shit this is like three times the power

    • Does it get hot on full brightness?

      • It does. Not super burning but warm enough for you not to hold onto that end

  • +2

enthusiasts torch for reasonable price, usb c charging, anduril software(can change all sorts of settings), long lasting, gave one to my old mum on the farm ,she loves it

    pretty thick though

  • +2

I owned this. It's bulky, weird to hold and there's no way to put a strap on it. Really really bright though, was epic.

    • you can use paracord to wrap around the handle and create a loop.

  • I've got a sofirn sc21 but the battery seems to discharge itself. Seems like a waste of money. i charge it and I'll use it once for a minute or so and then when I go to use it again it'll be dead.

    • Looks like you can lock those out, so just unscrew the body just enough to break the circuit and stop the battery going flat. Of course you will need to remember to tighten it back up when you go to use it again. It's a quite common thing to have to do with the electronic switch torches.

Oh, what @Pacbough said lol. I should read further ahead.

    • +1

That doesn't sound normal. The SC21 driver might be faulty.

The 16340 in my SC21 discharged by about 0.003V every 2-3 days when I measured it (not bad):
      https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/qi6lys/comment/…

You could reach out to Vivi, the Sofirn rep for Australia, sofirnjp [atgmail], to see if she can send a replacement SC21:
      https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/tj0evy/a_new_br…

      • Thanks, I'll reach out. It's only been on for maybe 5 minutes since I've owned it.

I fully charged the battery before using it for the first time(less than a minute on), but after trying it out the first time, when I went to use it the next day it wouldn't turn on. I plugged it in to charge and the light was flashing red, indicating critical power. Since then I've only charged it up to green once more and the same issue. I've just left the battery out for now.

  • +4

Sofirn torches are good quality. The batteries come very cheap with the bundle so are good for the price but may not give you the discharge rate required in some of their high power torches to reach the advertised max brightness.

With Anduril firmware torches it may be worth changing the aux led brightness (switch glow) to low or off to reduce power drain when not in use. Check your manual for how, it should be 7 clicks from off to toggle brightness. You can also unscrew the tailcap a quarter turn to break the circuit.

    • I've turned the LED in the switch off on my SC31, SP36 and LT1. No noticeable discharge for any of them in the 5 months since i bought my first Sofirn, apart from when they're being used.

This (SP36) is a breast so far as brightness. Notw that there's a few different SP36 subversions. Some are brighter, others have better CRI, …

      • It's not a lot of battery being drained. I measured the current on one of mine.
        Standby drain with aux LED:
        0.15mA on high
        0.08mA on low
It will take literally years to completely drain a 3000mAh battery if you don't use it but some torches you just leave in a draw and forget about it until you need it and you don't want the battery to be flat.

I like to leave a torch on my bedside draw and have the switch LED set to low as on high it can be a bit too bright at night.

  • What do people use 8000 lumen torches for?

    • +16

      Defeating darkness

      • +1

        sounds like another square-enix game.

    • I feel very safe walking the streets of my Sydney suburb at night when carrying one.

      • surely not, attracting gangs from several suburbs out!

    • You're not running it at max the whole time.

    • Great for camping, hiking, fishing, etc

But you don't always max it out.

    • Police stuff

      calling out Batman

  • I'm considering getting the SC31, which appears to be at a rather good price. Has anyone used it, and what are your opinions. This will be my first "high powered" torch (with all the rest being the run-of-the-mill AA and AAA torches. Also, which bulb temp did you go for? I'm leaning towards 5000k but would like to hear opinions. Cheers.

    • I don't own a SC31 but here's a review on the SC31 Pro https://budgetlightforum.com/node/75474

I have a similar torch from Wurkkos which is a Sofirn sub brand. Mine is also in 5000k and it looks pretty good, the light goes a bit greenish at lower brightnesses though. You can't really go wrong with an SC31 Pro IMO, the only things to watch out for are not leaving the battery in a hot place, don't look directly into the LED on high brightnesses, and the head of the torch will get rather warm when being used on high/turbo for a while.

As with all Anduril firmware torches you should check the temp and calibrate it if neccessary when you get it.

      • Thanks for the review link. Looks good.

  • Thanks OP, spent too much time researching, going to go for the BLF Anduino 4k version now, around the same price.

    • Any specific reasons??

      • +1

Bearing in mind this is my first torch, this is what I found:
BLF - uses a different bulb compared to the Pro. You lose some power but apparently you get better 'cri'. CRI means when you shine a light the natural colours reflect better (not washed out).
4000K - a more neutral warm light compared to the 5000K or 6500K on the Pro.
Anduino - same as the Pro, regarded as a good 'UI' for your flashlight. You click or hold a number of times and you can get your torchlight to do different things like 'candle' mode etc.
Final reason - cheaper - will be $56 tomorrow (Aliexpress anniversary day)

        • +2

can agree with you on this - i have the BLF version and the CRI is great, the colour of the light is amazing.

not to mention the torch with Anduino and all the modes is pretty cool

    • What's the exact model name? I can't seem to get a reasonable search result for "BLF Anduino 4k "

      • +1

This is the one I bought: Sofirn SP36 BLF. I got it with Anduril 2 - that's the latest software version for the flashlight (you can also buy the torch with Anduril 1 but it's basically the same price and outdated). You can select whether you want batteries and what colour temp you want (I got 5000K - neutral white).

Got my flashlight yesterday and it blows away anything you can buy at Bunnings by miles.

  • Is there a good way to mount this onto a bike for cycling?

    • I would not recommend this - if you are using this on the road you would end up blinding drivers and potentially causing an accident. You don't need anything near this powerful for cycling. For comparison, most car headlights are 2000-4000 lumen.

      • +2

I agree that it's not ideal (I wouldn't buy it with cycling on mind), but you don't have to run it on full power either.

        • That's a fair point, you could run it on a lower lumen…

      • +1

        +1

I use a 1000 lumen Niterider Lumina and it illuminates about 30m of footpath/road in front of me on a moonless night. I don't even need to ring my bell when I'm coming up behind someone as they can clearly see the light well before I get anywhere near them.

You definitely don't need anything more than that and even with a 1000 lumen light, you definitely need to dip your bike light in its mounting so you don't blind oncoming pedestrians/cyclists/cars.

      • +2

Exactly. Be very careful about the angle of which your torch will be mounted when night cycling. Glare oncoming traffic = looking for trouble for yourself.

        • What about Kangaroos lurking on the verges just waiting to jump into your path whilst cycling past? I've already been brought down once this year…. I need something with enough flood to see at least 20 meters covering the whole road and more, think car lights on full beam.

          Any suggestions?

          • @HelpWanted:

enough flood to see at least 20 meters covering the whole road and more, think car lights on full beam.

How do you intend to dip the beam for the traffic in front of you ?

Not sure if you're reading the actual thread you're replying to - you can't really use a torch like this on a bike, without blinding other traffic. And you won't last very long on your bike, if the cars around you can't see…
            <thud> … <dead> …

            • @Nom: Riding in the sticks with more Kangaroos than cars, IF a car happens to be coming the other way, I'd dip to the lowest setting or turn it off.

It wouldn't be the primary light as my Ay-Ups light the road and put holes sufficiently.

        • I cycle almost exclusively on bike trails late at night. I live far out so I never meet other cyclists and rarely encounter people taking a walk. I currently have a 1500 lumen setup and I feel like it's sometimes not enough especially around corners. Not sure if I should mess around with trying to get a helmet light or try to mount something like this.

          • @NinjaE: I have a 1000 lumen bike light on my eScooter and a 650 lumen helmet light. The helmet light does make a difference as you say because you can turn your head to see better around bends when riding on bike trails. An 8000 lumen torch is not what you want. It won’t help you see around bends any better and will create a hazard by blinding anything coming your way.

    • Yep sure it's, I have designed a few options: https://escootnow.com.au/products/Stonker-Headlight-Series-b…

  • Thanks op.
Deal came to $67 with the code (6500 Witt batteries)
    Still happy though

  • I want this but I can't justify it when I already have BLF Q8.

    • I've got both. This is smaller. Can be charged via USB C. That was enough for me. (Admittedly it wasn't enough for the minister of war and finance but you know what they say about permission and forgiveness!)

      • Can you still hot-swap batteries or are they sealed in?

        • What does hot swapping the batteries mean?

        • +1

You can screw the head off and remove the batteries for external charging.

I do this as I don't want to weaken the usb cover and prefer using a higher end analysing charger.

Make sure you lube the threads with some synthetic grease. I use SuperLube multipurpose. This also helps the o-ring keep a tight seal against moisture ingress

  • No problem getting the version with batteries or could it get refused by someone in the postal chain???

Fastech used to warn you before purchasing stuff like this with 18650 batteries….

    • +2

Sofirn usually ship with cells inside an aluminium torch. They also put black stickers on the flat negative end so that parastic drain doesn't lower the cell voltage.

I haven't noticed a UN3481 Lithium battery warning on the packaging. My orders came through ok.

  • How does this compare to the BLF Q8? Is blf and sofirn a rebrand? And SOFIRN Q8?

  • I was unable to get the price in the title. For some reason it would take the SPRING4 code. It did give me a new user bonus, and a US$1 coupon for US$47.83, which is only a buck more, so I still got it. Should be about $63-64 if you have a good international credit card without currency conversion fee. I also have an SC31 Pro which is great. I was just curious what 8000lm would be like!!

  • Ordered one last night, thank you!

Just in time because my Wurkkos WK30 from the last torch deal just arrived this morning.. xD

    • +1

      I'm still considering buying a WK30
How is the centring on the emitters?

      • +1

        Not centered..? 😅

Sorry I've only recently started collecting torches and not really sure what this means..

        • No worries I'm super new in the torch world as well
I've been doing research over on BLF when I saw the WK30 pop-up I did some research and found people were very impressed but there seems to be pretty consistent issues with the factory getting all three emitters perfectly Centre in the housing. I'm guessing that means the light beam might be a little bit off not exactly sure. How are you liking it so far I haven't ordered one yet but I noticed it's still on clearance

          • +1

@Sammy Boi: Ohhhh I totally get you now! You explained it so well I got it straight away and now you've explained it, I have no idea what I thought it meant before.. 🤣 Unfortunately I'm dumb and had to double check to notice it but you're right, all the emitters are slightly off-centre! I assume because it's the strongest light, the white seems to be the least noticeable. All my emitters seem to "flatten the curve" in a quarter-ish section of each beam.

Great little torch for the price I paid though, great to have around the house for any situation. Gets a little slippery with a warm hand though. Also noticed the battery moves around in the case at times. Straight forward instructions, and my favourite is the white beacon that goes off like a gunshot every few seconds if you're in a darker room. 🤣 But the white and red alternating flasher is great for outdoor road/warning uses.

Would definitely grab one if you're starting out and like these styles of torches with added functionality. I initially was just after something to replace my 10+ year old LEDlenser P7 but realised torches have come a LONG way in the last decade.. So now I've just collected a bunch of smaller torches and am hoping to grab an LEP torch one day just because why the heck not. 🤣
