Using Airbags from a Flood Damaged Write-off

Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying a flood damaged statutory write-off VW TDI RLine to use for parts to repair my repairable write off Golf R.

I was wondering if I'd be allowed to fit the airbags from the flood damaged car into my repairable write off?

The flood damage is freshwater that only made it to floor pan level and once the car is fixed it will be inspected in Queensland.

Sure! What could ever go wrong with airbags from a flood damaged vehicle.

      • with a written off type R, some interesting fact omitted here.

It's amazing what kind of rational thinking made you sign up for an account on a bargains site to ask random people the feasibility of something safety critical with no context or detailed information whatsoever. How do you function normally?

Whenever I need work on my car I always log on to OzBargain first because there are no other car related forums on the Internet. /s

My question is why do you need to replace the airbags in your car? Were they deployed? Both driver and passenger side?

  • +3

Seems odd they would have written off the car just because of water damage that only went up to the floor pan level.

    • +3

Pretty much all vehicles with that level of water intrusion will be written off.

OP - you are fine to use anything above the water line on the damaged vehicle.

      • Tyres can also be reused

@oscargamer: good on them for using recycled materials to make their shoes

Unfortunately the guidance from Qld Transport (and I assume every other road authority) says a car is a statutory write off once the water goes that high.

The insurers have no say in it

This sounds like a troll post.

You need to check with the person who is going to certify your repairs.

Have you got proof the vehicle was only floor plan deep? How long was it water looked and closed up allowing moisture to infiltrate all the sensitive electronics (and explosives) in the cabin?

    why not
should grab used condoms in the bin
wash them out and it's good to go

building parts in flood prone areas are the best, pre washed.

similarly clothes and electrical products. cleaned for ya. if they work means it's good. like toasters and air dryers. try them out

The airbags themselves never got wet and will function normally. The main issue is I can't find any concrete information regarding the legality of using airbags from a write-off that's recorded as being flood damage. I've posted in several forums hoping someone will know.

        From the website:

The following parts are not suitable for use when taken from a Statutory write off vehicle:
No SRS items , No BIW Frames , No Cabins/chassis rails , No pillars, roofs, quarter panels , NO WELD ON PANELS

        • OK…..but who would know?????

          • @oscargamer: As far as I know if OP has airbags listed in their report they need to show documentation of the manufacturer/dealer being the one to install new airbags or the assessor won’t pass them.

@ VWR I'd be asking first at your local motor registration branch or equivalent. Your profile says you are located in Queensland and rules usually vary from state to state.

OP doesn’t need to bother vehicle registration, the link I posted is the QLD inspection services website and contains most of the info OP will need to know such as

Can I use second hand airbags and SRS components?
No only new airbags and seat belts can be used when repairing a written-off vehicle. They must be supplied and fitted by the OEM Manufacturer / Dealership.

        And

The following parts are not suitable for use when taken from a Statutory write off vehicle:
No SRS items, No BIW Frames, No Cabins/chassis rails, No weld on panels.

I'm not 100% on this but I'm guessing the SRS Control Module is attached to the floor pan under the centre console on most VeeDubs. That probably got wet, shorted and could have fried the airbag end as well. Don't risk it for the biscuit.

Why would you even contemplate such a thing? Just sounds too risky.

I thought you need to provide receipts to wovi for all parts replaced, so check with them what you need.

Hopefully wovi are not as useless as they were a few months back.

No, if you had the required knowledge to install an airbag you'd know this.

You are trying to save money and will end up wasting money. Stop.

Installing an airbag may not be that difficult. Can remove the one off my steering wheel with a single push of a screwdriver to the release clip then unplug the cables. 30 seconds.

      • +1

        yea this

In this case it should be fine, no one will say 100% though and you might still have moisture/mold damage. Mold can eat stuff and could weaken the air bag material.

But this guy probably needs the sensors too and that could be very iffy if they have been emerged in water.

Worse case air bag or sensors fail, the guy he flips it to later dies and the old owner gets his ass sued cos he wanted to save a few bucks. You either crashed your car or bought a repairable write off, fix it properly!

      FTFY

  • Not forgetting that it may need to be OK'd by OP's car Insurance Company.

You WILL be getting the vehicle insured OP?

  • This is why you shouldn't buy a dodge repaired write-off

    • Unless it's becoming a track car 👍

  • +1

Thought you need to show parts receipts to clear the repairable write-off, no?

  • +1

If you heard of the worldwide multi-million vehicles Takata airbag recall, it was caused by moisture in the airbag, which caused corrosion and potential shrapnel flying through your head in case of deployment.

Also I'm fairly sure that you'll have to provide invoices for new airbags, safety belts and pretensioners.

  • Use them. They didn't get wet no issue. Just ensure they are compatible and ensure they are unpowered when dealing with them. I'm all for saving money if it's safe and legal to do so. Don't listen to all the negatives in the comments. Good on you

    • How will OP get the rwo vehicle registered if they can’t show evidence of the airbags being brand new?

    • if it's safe and legal to do so

as @mapax said above. its actually illegal to do it. the website states that safety items such as airbags can't be taken off other written off cars. also im pretty sure the SRS module on Volkswagens are very close to the floorpan so I wouldn't be taking a chance even if it was legal to do so.

Don't listen to all the negatives in the comments

and just end up wasting a whole bunch of money in the end
