Best Time to Travel to The US

I am interested in travelling to the US and was wondering when is the best time to travel (cost wise between US states or even international flights) over there? I initially wanted June '22 but it seems prices are crazy for domestic flights (i.e LAX to NY around $800ish, same period but in September / October is half the price) is it worth the cost/wait to do later in the year where its cheaper than doing a holiday in Summer? Also always wanted to watch an NFL game so thats on my bucket list too :)

Would love feedback from fellow OzB here who had travel during Summer or Autumn/Winter over there :)

  • you either stump up the cash to enjoy nice warm weather, or cheap out and get cold ass weather

Depends where you want to spend more time: Florida, Vegas, etc. arguably better in winter.

yeah.. depends on where you want to go, and what you want to do

last few times i've been to the US, went to California over early December. It's still sunny, and the weather gets to about 25 degrees max during the day, but nights can get a bit chilly. Although, last time i went (year before covid), it was a heat wave during December and it was mid 30's. But it was a nice mid 30's, and everywhere in the US has AC blasting

that might be a positive. we get obnoxiously hot weather here all the time, why go to America just to experience the same thing? why not go in winter and experience the snow?

      • It's all romantic the first few days, then the soggy boots and 25000 layers you need to remove when you enter the Met start pissing you off.

But yes, anything new is worth experiencing, at least you'll know you don't like it if you don't.

Because it's literally peak season over there, and LAX-JFK is an extremely high-demand, crazy popular route. If you're travelling and want to explore, I'd always avoid flying LAX-JFK. Depends what you want to see, but you could route through Texas and stop in Dallas for a few days, or perhaps DC if that sounds fun for you, and the two legs together getting to NY will be far cheaper than if you do the transcon route.

Consider flying into one of the other airports in/near NYC - might end up a lot cheaper

I doubt flights are going to be your biggest expense anyway though

Happy to be corrected, but I think the NFL season is from ~ Sept to Feb.
The 'best' time to go to the USA has been discussed on here before. It really depends on where you want to go and what you want to do. Once you have determined that, you may find that you don't need the LAX to NY flight.

We went to NY a couple of years ago in April. It snowed one day, fine most of the others. We still did lots of the things we wanted to do, plus more.
We flew back NY - SF and drove down to LA, and thought the flight costs were ok.

We've been to the States many times, usually April/May or Oct/Nov - and August in Hawaii, if that matters, since it's always nice there! The weather has always been good, not too hot or cold. Just make sure it's not tornado/hurricane season where you're going. We got stuck in Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Terrfying! The resulting snow that followed in New York was amazing though. If you need tips/ideas on places to visit, let me know. We've been to 35 of the 50 states, so have a few ideas. ;)

Edited to say - there's a reason we stopped visiting in summer…it was insane! All the attractions were packed, accommodation was always fully booked months in advance (up to a year in some places) and the prices seemed to go up just beause it was summer. Of course, all of that was before COVID, so may be totally different now.

    • I was stuck with Hurricane Sandy too! flight got cancelled and had to wait few days to get a flight out of JFK! crazy times! :)

thank you for the feedback, summer does look like insanely packed so far from what I can see :( I mainly want to visit nyc as i have mates who moved there said I should come summer time but I think other parts of the yr are fine as well :)

Depends where you want to go but nyc in June/July is oppressively hot, but in September it’s beautiful.

Go to Wikipedia for each city you are interested in and check out the climate stats for average temp to get an idea of the difference.

If you prefer muggy and consistently hot 30+ every day, then June might be for you. If you prefer cooler nights and mid to high 20s, then September might be for you
