15.6Ah Removable Lithium Battery to Suit Rovin Fridge/Freezers with Battery Support
      GH2206 - $219.00

Can't see any mention of what solar reg is in it, or if it has a 12v power input other than battery.

      • +7

Fridge draws 45w or so to run itself, the solar charge regulator can handle 200w 12v panels, though that's probably overkill for this, as the battery charger maxes out at 25w, so a 130w panel would be heaps.

It can be powered by the included 12v cig plug or 240v power adapter that puts out 12vdc.

There are smaller cheaper batteries, 7.8Ah and 5Ah.

        • So all in, how much are we talking roughly? (for appropriate battery and solar panels to run this all day down at the beach)

          • +7

@caprimulgus: Cheapest batt is $69 - you need a batt to make the solar part work, so get this one if you expect decent sun.

Jaycar have heaps of different panels to suit - $160-$260 depending on size, if they fold, and if they are flexible vs glass.

Any Glass 12v panel above 100w would be fine to power and charge the batt at the same time. Flexible cloth panels 100w would only just keep up, 200w, would be more than enough. The cloth ones can stand a lot more abuse, but are not as efficient.

            • @MichaelV: Cheers mate!

            • +1

@MichaelV: Are these fridges ok to have running 24/7 off normal power at home, or do you think they would "wear out" over time? Alternatively, if I purchased the smallest Rovin battery, the 5ah one, and I had some solar panels in a sunny position at home, could I permanently run the fridge off the solar panels? (Provided we get some decent weather!) Sorry, I have no idea how these things work. Just purchased the fridge tho, thanks op, seems like a great deal!

              • @PotPlant: Fridge would be fine running off AC forever.

The solar panel would also be fine, provided you had a 12v one of 100W or more rating. The biggest battery might have enough capacity to run overnight, but a cloudy day would reduce the chances of fully-charging the battery.

The solar thing is really only for camping use.

      • is it sold from the same website?, I cannot find it

          • @MichaelV: how long would 5.2Ah battery last ?

            • +1

@Omarko: These things use 5A flat out. So if its in a hot environment and using 5A for the whole 1hr.. The 5Ah battery would last 1hr. Ie..the battery can supply 5Amps for 1hr.

If in a cool shady spot and not opened, you would expect that it would cycle on and off using around 1Amp. In this scenario, it would last around 5 hrs.

So somewhere between 1 and 5 hrs. Definitely not over night.

  • How’s the quality OP? 30 Litres is not huge though although good price. I reckon battery is def required - you wouldn’t want to ruin your car battery or drain it overnight

    • The quality seems fine, but I haven't used it outside yet. Ended up getting a 100AH Lithium battery from ebay for $264 with a recent code so that should power it for a while I hope.

    • +1

30 litres isn't huge, but considering you don't have to waste space with ice, it's ample

  • How many cans of drink do you guys think this would fit? Trying to imagine 30L capacity….

-edit - just noticed I can keep scrolling the pictures for a little more clarity. Should get at least one layer of 15 cans, not sure how much room on top that leaves

    • +3

It's listed under the specs tab - 33 Cans

      • +1

I also missed the specification button - thank Russ. This would go alright on a quick all aussie adventure I reckon.

Note the 6amp draw will require 171Ah of lead acid battery capacity to run for 12hrs. This seems very inefficient

        • +5

That's assuming that it would be compressing 12hrs @ 100%, which definitely won't be the case. I have a 35L brass monkey (60W) with a removable battery 15.6ah and left running for a 10hr period on eco mode only drew around 4ah. So YMMV based on ambient etc etc

          This seems like good value.

    • Well, 375ml per can.

50 of them would be 18L; but probably more like 20ish because cans dont pack perfectly.

      So 2 cartons.

I dont like your odds of fitting 3 cartons though; because of the whole cylinder cans, cubic space thing.

    Thanks OP.

Can also be bought via EBay and using EBay Plus voucher for 5% off with free delivery.

  • Impressive solar input - Max 50 v 10A - - I dont see how the battery can be 15.6Ah though for the supposed size or price - for 18650's @ say 3ah would need 3x3x5 or 45 of them?

    • +1

Why on earth would they use 18650s?

They'd just use a lithium cell; hopefully LiFePo4.

    • Apologies my math would be 15 I think - battery would be better using say a Kickass power pack - about the same price but including a inverter and a bit more capacity.

    • So you could use a standard home solar panel with this?

      I have a heap of old 250w panels (measured SCC as 38v / 6.5A).

  • There are blue 18650-like cells inside these batteries. The battery can be charged by the fridge, or outside the fridge as it has a 12vdc socket in the side.

    • Hey Michael, you have this battery and have opened it up?
Do you know if it would be easy to hack in another connection to the fridge to run it with a more standard type of battery off solar? How many terminals does the battery connect to the fridge?

  • Is this the same as the brass monkey fridges

    • The design and function appear to be the same as the brass monkey fridges. I would even say that the batteries are the same, looking at the picture the slot certainly looks the same to me.

  • anyone know how long this battery would run this fridge ?
    https://www.tentworld.com.au/buy-sale/companion-40Ah-lithium…

  • DC current draw - 6 amps, or 5 amps according to the manual. So at peak draw, you're looking at around 60 watts. Most good compressor fridges (think Engel, National Luna etc) draw around 1.2 amps/hour, 2c at ambient 30c. This bad boy is more likely to be around 1.5 - 1.7 amps per hour - so a 40AH lithium battery with around 35A usable capacity would give you around 1 1/2 days.

    • Not sure you are reading that right. Peak draw is when it is set to freezer, usually around -15c, which is not the same as amps/hr at 2c ambient 30c.

Power consumption is quoted as 0.23kw/24 hr or approx 10W/hr @ 12V, which is 0.8 amps/hr. Ambient temperature is not quoted for that figure, and it's probably optimistic, but given the small size of this fridge it's probably not that far off.

      • The real world for these fridges is around 25-40 AH per day - and that's for a top brand, well insulated fridge

        • That sounds about right - about 1 amp per hour for a 35L fridge, considerably more on very hot days. On the quoted figures this is similar, but you'd need to test it.

      • Interesting…I've got a 40w panel, with around 8 hrs of sunlight, would produce approx 26AH of energy per day. Which should be enough to keep it going in daylight hours

However, this assumes it follows perfect sun. So I guess you would want more like 80w+ to be safe.

Paired with a couple of drill batteries in parallel 2x 4ah @18v (solar controller says it will take up to 50v), this should be enough to get through a weekend getaway without too much trouble.

  • 100AH Lithium battery from ebay for $264 ?

    Rohan where ?

  • Great deal OP and I didnt get charged for delivery to Brisbane metro, happy days!

  • I think that mine is faulty.

It worked well initially, and cooled to -12C.
I left it on overnight, to see if it would freeze some water battles solid.
But. this morning, although the display is on (i.e. its getting power) and the buttons work etc, the compressor does not start, and the temperature is climbing towards room temperature.

I have tried power cycling it from the control panel and the wall switch, but no effect.

Anybody else have a similar problem?
    Or any tips?

    Thanks

If its of interest to anyone…
I think my problems started after I installed & connected the bluetooth app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rovin.frid…
Then the fridge seemed to ignore my temperature settings and target odd temperatures.
However, after I reset the app settings, it might be behaving sensibly again.
I'll keep monitoring it for the next day or two, to see if I can trust it.

Btw, the app settings has these three settings, with these default values:
      Left TC: T>=-6C 0C
      Left TC: -12>=T<-6C 0C
      Left TC: T<-12C -3C

I think "Left" refers to the left zone of a dual zone fridge/freezer. This model only has one zone, i.e. no right zone.
But what is the "TC" value??
i.e. if the temperature is <-12C, what does a TC of -3C mean???

      • Use the Brass Monkey app instead, as it does not have these factory tweaks that can cause issues.

        • Thanks. I've swapped to the Brass Monkey app and will see how it goes.

New deal for a Rovin 50 litre fridge from Jaycar..$259

    https://www.jaycar.com.au/50l-rovin-portable-fridge-or-freez…

  • These units are a bit different from normal in that they have the compressor mounted high. That confuses me as I though with refrigeration the compressor always had to be at the lowest point in the circuit so that the refrigerant could drain back via gravity.
