This is a niche product. It's probably the only 8 inch android tablet that comes with a stylus, Dex,NFC and removable battery (!). It can also be used without battery while charging.

You might want to look at the marketing video for this product to get an idea of what the Galaxy Tab active series is typically used for.

It's not meant for ordinary use at home or for entertaining your kids with, it's got a tough armor / shell for maximum protection at the expense of weight and thickness (and your money).

After watching that, I want one…

      • 1:06 - X-Ray looks cool.

  • Looks to be like a iPad mini but to be used in challenging environments.

    • good for kids ?

A cheaper tablet with a rugged case and glass screen protector would be better.

Android 12 was just released for this device, 5 days ago. Should come to Australian handsets shortly.

  • i do love that mpos feature…even though i have no use cases for it whatsoever. and removable battery, how many tablets have that?

  • I've been thinking about this a bit. If Samsung squeezes in android 13/14 then this could easily last a kid for 6 years of schooling before needing to upgrade. Sure, you'll need to buy 1 or 2 more batteries but this will never need to be turned off and they can use it for everything.

The availability of spare batteries will still be an issue, note that the batteries are not sold by Samsung officially.

I did spot some retailers in the USA selling them but it's unknown if they're genuine.

It may be better to just buy them a larger tablet with a larger battery — the higher capacity offsets the gradual capacity loss as the device ages.

      • The main thing that's keeping me from buying a new device is how hard it is to replace the battery. I have a tab which is on 24/7 and running something whether it's a youtube vid or music, or soothing white noise at night while I sleep. The 6000mah battery degraded to 4800mah after 2 years.
If the form factor on this thing was just a little bit more handy I'd be all over it.
