  Yes, I can have life360 app on phone but that discharges phone quickly or they may just forget to take phone

    No. This doesn't have 4G, so it won't have anyway of communicating without a phone.

    If you have an iPhone, Find My Friends built into the phone will only use battery when you request their location.
