    So 6 in 1 :

    Input: USB C
    Output:
    1x HDMI 4k@60
    1x RJ45
    2x USB 3.0
    1x USB C PD charging
1x USB C charging and data

    • 2 X USB 2.0 NOT 2 x USB 3.0?

  • that 2nd haribol hub looks like it's powered "to charge laptop".. does this mean it also powers the ports to help out with the load? i'd be using it on an older pc with usb c pci-e card. thx

  • +6

bought the 1st one 2 weeks ago for $50. charges macbook pro, hdmi 60hz and charge iphone at same time. works well.

    • 4K @ 60Hz?
Asking as some dongles don't really do 4K60/hit and miss?

      • +11

There are currently two classes of chipsets. One supports USB-C/alt-mode DP 1.2 and another one supports USB-C/alt-mode DP 1.4. Your actual device also matters (a lot).

So, if you have a device that supports alt-mode DP 1.2, even if you use DP 1.4 based dongle, you can only use it in DP 1.2 mode. There is also a potential compatibility issue. It is good that the item description does NOT include Macbook Pro/Air 2017 or below (so if you have one of those, DO NOT buy this). It's NOT simply buy DP 1.4 based dongles as they do not provide the right feature set (display wise) for DP 1.2 based devices.

USB-C is actually a mess. It's more complicated than people think and without knowing your device(s), not able to provide correct information.

        • Is there a way I can buy some expensive doc, to output 120hz 1080p from my 2020 macbook pro (m1)?

          • +1

@idonotknowwhy: A Thunderbolt 3 dock should be able to do what you want (not usb-c)

            • +9

@Nitro 123: Thunderbolt 3 is an overkill for 1080p, even for 120hz. But it does fulfil the expensive factor.

          • @idonotknowwhy: If you are only after 1080p/120Hz, then you don't need an expensive dock. However, since you mentioned "expensive", then I would suggest Apple official dongle from Apple store. If it doesn't work or you are unhappy about it (boss/wife complains you overspend), return it within 14 days and get a full refund.

While this one should work (based on the tech specs), I am not sure whether it is worth the risk if you have a Macbook Pro. I am referring to the USB-PD passthrough part. I'd rather go original for 2020 Macbook Pro (m1) 13 inch. For laptops with 4 Thunderbolt/USB-C ports, I would simply use a separate port for power (even if these dongles offer PD passthrough). With 2 ports, you want to pick a better one. What we generally don't realise is that the power passthrough isn't 100%, these dongles / docks do take power.

The price of this is very tempting, but I am just not comfortable feeding 60W+ through this dongle. For mobile phones and tablets, it's less of an issue due to lower wattage (I think).

            • @netsurfer: I see. The random dongles I've tried with 4k60, like Belkin, can't do 120hz out of the macbook pro.

I agree with not using this cheap device in the deal to power anything expensive. I read about bricked Nintendo Switches with third party docks.

If it doesn't work, return it within 14 days and get a full refund.

              Okay I'll try this.

              • @idonotknowwhy: If you only plan to use it with an Apple MacBook Pro then the Apple dongle is the best bet. Unfortunately the Apple dongle seemed to have compatibility issues with my non-Apple laptops and it wouldn't charge my Lenovo X1.

I ended up resorting to buying a Lenovo TB4 dock for $280 which could output 120Hz display + charge over the cable, and was backwards compatible with USB-C devices which don't have TB4 support. It is reliable at least!

          • +1

@idonotknowwhy: I just bought a Ugreen USB C to HDMI cable to connect my Mac Mini M1 to a second 27" Dell monitor (running at 2560x1440 @ 144Hz) - works perfectly.

So I guess you could buy one of those or this
hub which should do 1080p @ 120Hz you'd assume (also assuming your monitor does it, of course)

        • Hey you seem like you know much about hubs and docks. I'm using an alienware x15 which has a thunderbolt port and I wanted a hub which can support a QHD monitor with 165 hz which I often connect it to.. Any leads ?

    • I also bought the same in Jan for $49.99

  • +1

I assume at this price this wouldn't have a display link adapter? (can't find it on the listing)

Looking for a dock on budget for the second monitor.. guess it's not going to be an easy search

    • this only works if you're laptop has a usb-c dp alt mode port or thunderbolt enabled port. For laptops that have only USB-A or normal USB-C youll need the more expensive displaylink docking stations.

  • +1

it gets hot very easily. mine lasted for less than a week before burnt smell emerged. if all the led flashes, it means busted and no longer works.

    • +2

How did you go with the warranty claim?

      • +2

i got a refund. just the fact that it overheats so easily is a concern esp if you leave it attached throughout the day at times without supervision…

    • +21

Ensure to claim warranty, even on cheap products. Make the dropshipper pay for trying to flood the market with crap, and ozadvertising.

    • +1

I had the same issue with it over heating. I had a hdmi and 2 portable hdd in the dock and it would over heat make a little click sound and power off. Even with just the hdmi port in use it seems to run very hot.

  • Looks like the first one supports 4K@60Hz HDMI, while the second one only supports 4K@30Hz.

Curious to know - why would there be a drop in spec for the more expensive model?

    • +1

That one needs to support dual displays, there isn't enough bandwidth with a DP 1.4 based chipset to do so (if USB 3 support is still required).

  • +1

if anyone finds a USBC hub that has Ethernet and works with MS Teams (as in it does not crash the Ethernet adapter), let me know!

I have been through 4 already and every MS Teams connection crashes Ethernet and reconnects to Wifi.

    • Could be a Microsoft Teams issue.

      • +1

apparently it has to do with cheap HW thats put into these docks (including ones Dell make) and they were designed years ago and Teams is very intensive for network requirements and these docks cant handle it and thus crashes the ethernet HW part.

        • +2

Apparently Realtek RTL8153 is commonly used, and very rubbish. Maybe try caldigit.

          https://overengineer.dev/blog/2021/04/25/usb-c-hub-madness.h…

        • Need more information. Which device, what docks. Teams is not that network intensive since you can get it to work over WiFi. Did you power the hub/dongle properly? The cable used for the USB-C charger to this dongle (I assume that's your setup), is that a cheap one or original?

Very often, we would blame the dongles, but the reality is that with USB-C, the whole chain needs to be good. There is no free lunch, you want power + data + display all through 1 pipe, don't cut corners. If you use dodgy part is any part of that pipe / chain, you are asking for trouble.

          • @netsurfer: if you google the issue, you will see its quite common :

            https://www.google.com/search?q=usb+c+docking+crashing+teams…

            • +2

@Omarko: This whole USB-C idea is only good in theory, but is actually bad in practice. With these docks, USB-A ports, Gigabit, Card Reader all go through the same data pipe. Apple's expensive dongle (which only works reasonably well with Apple devices) only gives you 1 USB-A port.

The only way to test is to see if an USB-C port dedicated for Ethernet dongle would still have the same issue. Also, if you have an Intel 7th gen device, you will be quite limited in terms of dongles/docks. You run into dongle compatibility issues more often. Apple M1's compatibility with USB-C devices (dongles, docks, monitors) appears inferior compared to Apple Intel 2019, 2020.

With my devices, there is not a single dongle/dock that I can use which works across all devices. Depending on the device, I need to use an appropriate dongle. It is really annoying.

  • I wonder if this will work on a Samsung Android tablet?

    EDIT: found the answer:
    "Compatible with Samsung: S8 / S8 +, S9 / S9 +, S10 / S10 +, S20 / S21, Note9 "

    • +7

Except, they didn't tell you due to DP 1.4 based chipset, at 4K, they will be limited to 4K/30Hz. That's because there is no Android phone at the moment that supports USB-C/Alt-mode DP 1.4. They only support USB-C/Alt-mode DP 1.2.

      • Thanks for the info.

      • +1

I have confirmed this with a test. Samsung S21, an equivalent dongle from a competitor (DP 1.4 chipset based with USB 3 support), HDMI 2.1 cable included with an XBox Series X, 4K monitor reports 30Hz only. However, it might not be an issue if you intend to use Samsung DeX, since DeX doesn't support 4K.

      • Edit: nvm beat me to it

How do you get 4k out of the s21? Is this just phone mirroring by cable?

        • +1

Yes, just phone mirroring by cable. Phone does want to initiate DeX, I just cancel that. 4K/60Hz is possible with USB-C/USB-C to a USB-C monitor (DP 1.2/1.4 prioritise display mode), a USB-C to HDMI dongle (DP 1.2). USB speed drops to USB 2.0. I really hope Android phone makers will consider supporting DP 1.4 (or better yet, go USB 4 + DP 2.0 support - but that's really wishful thinking since Apple is still on DP 1.4 for M1 and there is no alt-mode for iPhones). Most of us don't really care about connecting phone to a TV or display via a wire. Remote streaming is far more popular.

  • +1

Anyone have any ideas for a good 2 x HDMI output hub? (separate displays)

    • There are Few dual hdmi hubs that do FHD, but not well with a mac. If you need dual 4k, you need a dock

      • Don't have mac, just need dual displays? Anyone got nay experience and can link a decent one on the cheap side?

  • I tried the first, it's $39 at check after code. appears code is only 10%, not 20%.

    • +2

You need to apply the 20% voucher at the product page first, then use the code at check out to bring it down to $30. And i think only 1 quantity is allowed. I tried purchasing more than 1 but couldn't get the price to be $30 each.

      • Thank you, sorted it out. Also 8% cashrewards on top.

        • +1

0% cashback on anything listed under the computers category unless I'm mistaken.

  • +2

That's a lot of ethernet. Does it come in a spool?

  • +3

Any word it will work with Chromecast with Google TV?

    • +2

Based on past comments in previous deals, it is unsafe to get this for Google TV (power issue). USB-C/PD passthrough isn't 100%, these docks do take some power out (those card reader, ethernet, USB-A ports do not run on air, they do need power).

I am low on cash, otherwise I would buy this toy just to test it.

    • Ummm I think you misunderstand this product does. What do you want to achieve?

      • Be a USB hub for a Google TV Chromecast. Other models do something similar. But it's very hit and miss if they work.
Allows a cabled ethernet connection and USB stick memory extension…

        • +2

If you want to use the original charger, then you need to find a dongle that doesn't take up too much power. If you are willing to use a charger with more power, then that might improve the chance. However, the issue is that the 5V power charging mode IS affected by the passthrough, so most, if not all of these dongles cannot provide 5V/3A after the passthrough.

I have a Google TV Chromecast, but I am not keen to buy this dongle. The only reason for me to buy it is to test it. While I kinda would like to do that for people, I am low on cash so I need to stop buying toys that I don't intend to use long term.

          • @netsurfer: I feel ya! Wasn't getting it for me but I know people are regularly on the look out for this stuff.

    • +1

Just checked the product description. Relevant section below:

      Warm Tips:

      1. We suggest just one HDD/SSD is connected at a time due to power output limitations of some laptops.
      2. The USB Hub is not compatible with Google Chromecast TV.
    • I don't think it will work… Won't read your usb stick

  • +1

I am using M1 2020 and updated it to 12.3.1 a few days ago. The USB C PD sometimes charges my M1 and sometimes doesn't. I have to restart or charge using its own USB C port instead of this hub's PD.

    • Original Apple USB-C/USB-C cable or OZB deal USB-C/USB-C cable? Anyway, yes, people think USB-C is really magical, but the reality is that it's not the case. Devices will check and while they will try to workaround inferior dongles / chargers, they do cause issues. When you check these inferior cables, dongles through an USB-C meter, you realise your devices somehow know and drop voltage / current to compensate. There are also dongle chipset compatibility issues.

      • I tried both apple original and Besaus 100w USB C cables, with Apple 30w charger. Same result. I didn't have this issue before I updated to the latest.

This hub gets warm like everyone claims. My monitor is only 1080p 60hz. The hub has to stay still and not move much, or else it loses the connection between the monitor and the hub for a sec, quite annoying.

        • Sounds like a dongle issue. I doubt you have a USB-C meter to investigate this further (one of those costs more than this dongle). Apple is known not to care about 3rd party dongles. Not much we can do about it. I normally use Apple original dongle with my MBP.

  • Hi Any recommendations for good dock station ? Looking to setup work station

    Thanks

  • Would anyone be able to advise if these would work with the following Lenovo laptop? Would need to be plug and play as it's for dad who's not the most technically inclined.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/670861

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-5-serie…?

  • Sorry for noob question but will the video output work with any USB-C laptop or will it need thunderbolt?

    • +1

These are purely USB-C devices - (not) having Thunderbolt is irrelevant.

    • +4

For the first dongle, it only works fully with an USB-C laptop that supports alt-mode. There are USB-C ports on PC desktops and laptops which are data only (no alt mode display stream support). Often, those data only ports do not support power delivery either.

Even if your device supports Thunderbolt, if it is an Apple device, Apple refuses to support USB-C MST (Apple wants you to use Thunderbolt with daisy chain), so getting one of those USB-C dongles which supports multiple displays will not work on Apple devices (you will only get 1 display out, if you want multiple displays on a Mac, go Thunderbolt and get one which supports daisy chaining). If you have M1 (instead of M1 Pro or M1 Max), you cannot really have multiple external displays (except Mac Mini M1, where you technically have 2). There is a DisplayLink hack around that, but it's an ugly solution.

In case you are wondering why this is so complicated, it is because USB-C AND Thunderbolt are a mess. They are both evolving standards. Furthermore, Apple has zero intention to make USB-C/alt-mode popular nor support the full feature set. Apple doesn't care if their latest Mac OS is incompatible with some el cheapo USB-C dongles/docks. Apple sells Thunderbolt monitors.

      • I have latest version of intel MBP. Is there any dock you are aware of that I could use to plug 2 USBC monitor in it? The goal is to have only 1 cable to plug instead of 2 :)

        • +1

Confused with your question. The main objective of getting an USB-C monitor is to use USB-C/USB-C cable without the need for a dock or dongle. If you want one cable out of your MBP's Thunderbolt 3 port to 2 USB-C monitors, for Apple devices, that means Thunderbolt 3 or 4, and monitors which support daisy chaining (you still need to chain the two monitors together so technically you need another Thunderbolt 3 cable to connect the two monitors together.

There are Thunderbolt docks which support multiple HDMI ports (or HDMI + DisplayPort). Apple does not want to support USB-C/alt-mode with MST (for good reasons, because Thunderbolt 3 has more bandwidth. However, this may change later with USB 4 - though I doubt it given Intel/Apple would implement newer revision of Thunderbolt 4 to better that).

If you really want 2 HDMI displays without paying for Thunderbolt 3 dock, the only way I can think of is a DP 1.4 based dock + a USB-A DisplayLink adapter. However, the second display would be DisplayLink based so don't expect too much out of that. The second display via DisplayLink is not going to be able to support 4K/60Hz. It's a hacky and problematic setup.

  • If anyone has used this with a chromecast, report back please!

  • How are these compared to Satechi?

  • +3

I bought one of these about 2 weeks ago. It seemed to be the best option just short of a Thunderbolt dock for my MacBook Pro.

I've daisy chained another one with additional USB ports and taped that down to the back of my desk. So far it seems to work great and 40k @ 60Hz is no issue. Even though my laptop can handle 100W PD, the 86W that goes through this seems to be enough in most scenarios.

NOTE: While it does say Gigabit Ethernet on the Amazon page, the packaging had a label over that saying it's only 10/100. For whatever reason the Amazon page doesn't reflect this and tbh if I was going to use it for ethernet too I'd be pretty pissed.

  • Can we use this for Ipad Mini 6 gen? just for HDMI port while charge at the same time

    • Definitely can use it for an HDMI port. However, keep in mind this is not Thunderbolt. Quite sure you would be able to charge at the same time if you connect a USB-C cable to the adapter.

      • Thankyou, ordered 1

        • Forgot to change: the adapter is Thunderbolt but the iPad isn't.

  • Will this do 4K at 60Hz via USB C Port as well? Can we have two monitors side by side that way (one with USB C one with HDMI). My laptop is thunderbolt 3 so I'd love to have power delivery to laptop while doing the above. Any idea anyone? Thanks

    • +1

I have one of these and on my MacBook Pro it works fine with 4k @ 60Hz.

      • The question was whether it works with two monitors, one of them being 4k@60Hz.

        • Ah my bad. I thought they meant one via USB-C separate to this cable. This definitely won't do 4k 60Hz for both monitors at the same time via the cable.

          • @AccioHagrid: Okay. Does that mean both USB C and HDMI can do 4K at 60Hz on its own without the other being active? I've used both USB C to Display port vs HDMI to HDMI and I tend to think display port for some reason always gives better & stable connection. Probably due to higher bandwidth? Anyways, if I can have one USB C connected to laptop (as PD and data) then the second USB C as display out to 4K monitor at 60Hz (HDMI will be left unoccupied). This is a doable scenario right?

            • +1

@npnp: No, the two USB-C ports, one of them is only capable of USB-PD (so for power only). The other one for USB-C data only (the so called capable of charging is just 5V I reckon).

For USB-C or Thunderbolt 3/4 devices, please do not just go my laptop or my desktop. Specify which one, which year (CPU gen) and best to provide the actual CPU model. If the laptop has a discrete GPU, best to provide details too. Windows and Mac work differently. This whole USB-C and Thunderbolt 3/4 is a mess.

Thunderbolt 3/4 runs on PCIe gen 3 x4, so while technically, it is capable of 2x4K, you are basically asking to use that bandwidth close to maximum. Expecting a dongle/dock in this price range to offer you what you want is unrealistic.

              • @netsurfer: Damn.. Then this is not what I'm looking for. XPS 9750 9th Gen i7 with Thunderbolt 3 NVIDIA 1650 if that makes a difference.

                • +1

@npnp: Ah, I see what you mean now. You want to connect one 4K monitor to the Thunderbolt 3 port and another 4K monitor to the HDMI port on your laptop. If yes, you most certainly can.

Any USB-C based dongle that supports DP 1.4 is suitable for Intel 9th gen with Thunderbolt 3. The main issue is that the feedback from OZBers on this dongle isn't good. Intermittent display disconnects… Also, a lot of people thing USB-PD passthrough from these dongles are cool, but in reality, it is not 100% passthrough. You could lose up to 15% if you connect USB-A devices, use the card reader and the gigabit ethernet.

  • Neat! I was just thinking of getting something for ethernet for a new laptop.
And boo to laptop manufacturers that don't include an ethernet port by default.

Before you reply that laptops are too thin to have ethernet ports now, I remember when Xircom had a PC Card that had an ethernet port. If they can fit it there, they can fit it onto current gen laptops.

  • This hub works for most of the time but be aware this hub can be temperamental.

The hdmi monitor can sometimes not recognise it is being summoned and requires the usc-c cable to be disconnected and reconnected for it to work.

For most part it does work fine, just the above glitch can be annoying.

I've bought a couple of different ones in the past and usually they die around the year mark. It works as a USB hub, but the USB-C charging no longer works.

I read its related to cheap internals not taking the 65W USB-C current long term.
