cheers OP, perfect for my feet-pics collection.

    • For whaat?

      • +3

        FEET PICS

        • -1

          PIGS???

  • +1

8TBs for $221 too, which is the cheapest they've been for at least 12 months

    • 8TB likely not helium and probably not SMR

      • +3

You don't want it to be SMR. You want it to be CMR. S = Shingled = Slow

    • +5

16TB for $398.25, there are two 8TBs inside.

      • -2

        what??? really?

    • Probably fine but could die earlier if leaving on all the time (?).

I got a 8TB Seagate IronWolf NAS 3.5" for $250 from eBay recently to install in a PC

      • I bought that too, don't people say helium drives may also die earlier as helium can leak out then it stops working?

        • +1

          Who knows really..
I've got a lot of old 3.5" WD green drives sitting around that are all fine (250-2TB), bit useless these days.

Hopefully not too loud anyway, but PC on the floor just a fairly quiet build.

          • +1

@G-rig: Just not sure if helium is beneficial or detrimental to long term reliability but maybe in a nas running non stop, the benefits may outweigh the cons.

            • +1

@JL1: No worries, either way a Nas drive should be better, my PC isn't always on but handy to have for later and get a Nas one day and another drive

      • I got a 8TB Seagate IronWolf NAS 3.5" for $250 from eBay

from eBay store like ComputerAllianze or private seller? for me - drives only from Amazon.

        • Futu_online.
I'm sure they wouldn't be knock offs etc:P

Bought, thx OP. Last time was a couple years back for $280, so close enough!

  • 14TB seems like better value. Is this maybe an inferior drive or something?

    • Did you just judged a drive by its label colour??

      • WTF are you talking about.

      • +1

White labels for life, where as colored labels get life.

  • This good for a NAS that stores music, movies, photos and games?

    • +1

Yes. And is as good as 14-18 tbs, hidden gem this is

  • Can be formatted for Mac?

    • +3

      Yes

      • Thanks 👍

  • Is this good for a backup hard drive, or is this better to be shucked for a NAS. Was waiting for a 12Tb to be on sale but only need it as a backup, not sure if another drive is preferred?

    • +1

Good for both, as USB backup and shucked to NAS. Hellium makes it spin even quieter

      • Thanks for the reply and posting nuker, appreciated!

  • +1

Does this come with AU power adapter ?

    • +1

Probably not. They will usually say if it's the Australian version and you'll probably know based on how expensive it is. Australian versions are usually a lot more expensive. The power supplies ac adapters are normally those universal ones that go from 100v-240v so you can generally just use an adapter.

    • +2

No, but after registered you can contact WD support to get a free one. I did twice 2 years ago.

  • Thank you kind sir! I’ve finally bought the last 16TB drive I needed for my NAS - last one from Black Friday was stolen from my front door :(

    • +1

you still need a spare, you know that, right :)

    • +1

      did you get refunded?

      • I did actually. Amazon we’re surprisingly good about it.

  • +2

Back in 2000, I really was expecting 100TB hard drives for $99 by 2020.

    • +1

      And flying cars by 2015

  • +1

    Coming up as $320

  • +2

Arrived today in a paper bag….. Not even a bubble wrap. I dont understand why they would do this, when I buy toothpaste it still comes in a box

    • +1

I got it in white carton WD box, as shown on last photo in description. The box had moulded inserts holding enclosure, enclosure itself has rubber mounts for the HDD. Cannot complain

  • +2

Mine drive arrived just before the weekend in all the correct packaging - white retail WD Box, with plastic packing inserts, rubber feet etc. UK power adapter, but a $5 UK to AU adapter from the green sausage warehouse sorted that out. Standard shucking disassembly and no 3.3v pin mod needed. After 2 days of write operations and some other drive tests, all checked out well.

My drive inside was a white label, model WD160EDGZ. Not sure how different this is to the EDFZ's that I received on the Black Friday 2021 sales from Amazon? Either way it's happily churning away in my NAS.
