A small price to pay for something that will last for decades. Compared to a few mach3 cartridges, it's a good investment.

Source: I've had my 34c for about 15 years and it's going great.

@Malarkey: Mine lasted about 3 years before it corroded beyond use.. ymmv

@djsweet: If you look after it correctly, it will last a lifetime.

I've had mine for 5+ years and it looks as good as the day i bought it.

Wtf, did you keep it in a sink full of water whenever you weren't using it?

I've got a Merkur from 2015 that doesn't have a single spot of rust on it. It's not hard to look after mate, just dry it off when your done and store it somewhere that isn't damp. You can apply some Vaseline if you really want to keep moisture off it when it's being stored.

              • +2

@Gnostikos: Took it apart and washed each component with hot water and dried with a towel. Then put back together and left lying on its side till next use. The thread which screws into the handle was the part that corroded. There was not corrosion visible on the outside. I’m guessing some moisture was trapped when I put it back together after drying, and because it was on its side it didn’t drain out. Even so, I expected more than 3 years

@djsweet: I learned the old Vaseline trick from a barber; perhaps that's why mine has lasted this long. He said after each shave, rinse it, take it apart and apply a thin layer of Vaseline to the razor blade, the cap and the guard and little dab where the thread on the cap screws into the handle, to prevent moisture from going into the handle itself and getting trapped in there.

Even still, there's been plenty plenty of times where I haven't bothered applying Vaseline to mine after shaving and I still didn't notice any rust.

Everyone I know who uses double-edged safety razors has generally had the same one for most of their life (some even use their dad's/grandfather's razor).

Are you sure yours was a real Merkur?

                • @djsweet: i tend to buy chrome plated brass razors or stainless steel rather then zinc diecast with chrome plating …..

Surely you are better off buying astra's?

Handle wise I'm happy with my Edwin Jagger DE89.

If I was buying now I'd probably be considering a Henson AL13.

I prefer these Bic Chrome Platinum personally, they work better for me. For me, sharp like a Feather but none of the irritation, smoother than most if not all other blades I've tried and I've sampled the majority of the popular stuff. I've tried all the popular Gilette/Astra blades and found them to be good to great, but not any better than the Bic. Personally the Gilette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum (Black) is about equivalent, really like that one too. I think it's fair to say that I just don't get on well with blades that are less sharp.

I A/B'd the Bic against Astra Superior Platinum just now for curiosity and tbh the Astra SP has to be my least favourite of the Gillette blades, just rough in comparison. But that's just my experience. I recall the Astra Superior Stainless being much better for me, but again, that's known to be sharper so personally no surprise I prefer it.

So I would say no, not necessarily better off with Astras, it depends what you like. The Bic is well worth considering for those who like Feathers etc. but at a much better price.

      • How would you say the bics compare to personna reds?

        • I haven't tried any Personna blades, sorry. But going off this review, they sound quite similar; compare with Bic review from the same person.

      • Good write up on these awesome blades. I find they’re nice & smooth on my skin as well, Astras don’t go well for me at all. My all-time favourite were Polsilver Super Platinum but they’re impossible to find now. Apparently, Wizamet are the same blades, but even they can’t be ordered at the moment, either.

      • Thanks. I've tried feathers and found them much too sharp for me.

Happy to see the Bic are actually good quality as well.

Astra Green for days you want a comfortable shave on less growth.

Bic or feather when you have a heavy beard and need the extra sharpness.

    Are these good for Shivs?

  • I haven’t tried these. Astra Platinum are great and only $12.90

Safety razor? Seems like the least safe amongst commonly available shaving options.

    • +5

Safety razor because it's safer than the at-the-time alternative straight razor (think Sweeney Todd).

The only "dangerous" part is installing the blade, but you can hold it from the sides which aren't sharpened.

Shaves better than cartridge razors, and doesn't get clogged like cartridges would for me.

    • +1

You get a lot less razor burn, irritation and ingrown hairs with safety razors because there's just one blade gliding over your skin instead of 15 or whatever ludicrous number Gillette is up to these days, which only shred your skin unnecessarily. Ironically, those multi-blade razors still give you a less close shave in my experience because the blades are so cheap and dull usually.

  • Is this good quality for area around hole?

    • +3

      Try finger, but hole

      • +1

Not finger, to make feel smooth no hairy.

  • Does anyone shave their heads with these razors instead of a mach 3 etc

  • Very good blades. Probably not worth it if you're not a Prime member ($10 shipping? No.) I picked up a tuck a while back for $13. If you include shipping, at $21, you'd be better off buying a tuck of Gillette Nacets instead.

The finishing on the Merkur 34C isn't as good as the Edwin Jagger/Muhle equivalent (purchased mine 2020). Maybe it was better 15 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if the coating wore off and water got into the pot metal underneath. I've switched to an all stainless unit since.
