Retroarch in Xbox One/Series Retail Mode Free (Normally Requires $20 Dev Subscription and Console in Dev Mode)

2380

MS is now blocking all emulators already installed. Dev mode is now the only option.

Update: For Wii and GameCube see here.

Previous deal is now out of date and incorrect.

The process is much more simpler now that white listing has been removed.

Xbox One consoles can play from NES up to PS1 games.

Xbox Series consoles can play from NES up to DreamCast, GameCube/Wii and limited PS2.

Basically you're making Xbox a RetroPie killer for free.

Instructions:

  1. Go to https://gamr13.github.io using Edge on the Xbox and click on each to install the apps.
  2. Use the FTP app to copy over the required BIOS files and Roms (obviously these can't be linked to here and you should legally own these to do so).
  3. Enjoy.

Make sure you check out DuckStation (either standalone or in Retroarch). Even the OG Xbox One can upscale PS1 game to 1080p at 60fps. It looks gorgeous.

Ignorant people were reporting the deal last time. To be clear from the start, Retroarch and Duckstation are open source.

NOT EXPIRED: Apps will be re-uploaded in a few hours. Follow on Twitter here, or just keep trying every few hours.

  • Mine doesn't work at all any more. No games load. Just black screen.

  • Anyone know if save files and save states can be saved onto USB? I worry that this will get disabled at one point and will lose access to the oh so precious saves.

Yes, that's where you should be saving them to.

  • Retroarch is crashy!

    • Sounds like you've set it up wrong.

      • Scanned in a few ROMs now it just crashes when I move the menu down to explore. I put the ROMs through a JRomManager they even have the correct DAT files but I still get random crashes just using the front end menu.. have the latest build. I've watched some long setup tutorials on YouTube.

To be honest I am technical and have been using computers since the early 80s and write code, I've also used many emulators over the years, I think the first one was a Sinclair Spectrum (my first computer) on an Amiga - but RetroArch I think has defeated me (in it's many incarnations) 🤣

I find these days it's just better to pick the few selected games you really want to play and concentrate on them, once you start adding sets it just creates issues.

        • There's a setting you've got to turn off to prevent that. I'll try to find it in the FAQs.

@PainToad: Turn off "Explore" under Settings -> User Interface -> Menu Item Visibility

I suggest reading through the guide on Discord.

            • @PainToad: Thanks mate - I will give it some more time, I know it's a great app I just have enough grey hairs as it is! ;)

@beebul: All good. Retroarch is farrrrr from being user friendly. But once it's setup, it's great.

  • Thanks. Will bring my Xbox one back to life.
