Dolphin Emulator (GameCube & Wii) in Xbox Series Retail Mode Free (Normally Needs $20 Dev Subscription and Console in Dev Mode)

1270

MS is now blocking all emulators already installed. Dev mode is now the only option.

Following up on this deal (which is still relevant for all other consoles), there is now a standalone Dolphin emulator instead of just the Retroarch core.

This gives much better performance. Even the Series S can emulate the vast majority of GameCube and Wii games upscaled to 1440p.

Steps:

  1. Join the Discord linked to.
  2. Check the announcements rooms for the latest download link.

    1. This link needs to used in Edge on the Xbox directly.
    2. The apps get removed every few day. If you’ve already installed them and launched it at least once they’ll continue to work on your console. If the apps are removed before you install them - keep checking back for them to be re-uploaded.
  3. Follow this guide, skipping the steps for installing it in Dev Mode (because you’ve already got it installed in Retail Mode).

Playing Mario Galaxy upscaled to 1440p on an Xbox without the motion controls is amazing.

Notes:

  1. OzBargain (completely understandably) does not allow the discussion of illegal roms, so don’t ask. Dolphin itself is completely open source and legal.

  2. One person reported getting a temporary ban for uploading screenshots of emulators to Xbox Live. Don’t be an idiot and do that and your account should be fine. There has been no one banned for simply installing and playing emulators on an Xbox One/Series

  3. You can install this on an Xbox One, but the performance will be crap. Check out the other deal linked above for older consoles, Atari through to PS1.

Enjoy.

  • Have dolphin running on Macbook Pro with M1 Pro. Super Mario Galaxy in 4k has never looked better!

    • +4

Series X can play lots of Wii games at 4K, I haven’t bothered trying myself but as I don’t have 4K TV.

Ryujinx now supports Apple Silicon with great performance if you want to play Switch games.

      • Yes, I've got Mario Kart 8 deluxe, Super Mario 3D world and Lego star wars all running amazingly too on my mac!
Mario Maker 2 doesn't seem to work though :(

    • You can also run PS2 games on Apple silicon macs natively using AetherSX2

  • +1

Series s is basically a emulation machine

    • Agreed, it's fantastic for this.

How is Xbox one X vs Series S? Particularly in terms of dreamcast, wii, gamecube

    • +1

The issue is the CPU performance. Despite the One X having a more powerful GPU the CPU architecture is a decade old.

      • 2019 was a decade ago?

They run off zen2, aka the Ryzen 3000-series.

        • +5

The Xbox One X is a higher clocked Xbox One (2013) "Jaguar" CPU, It needed to stay the same for compatibility.

          • @Jimbuscus: Lmao I misread - oops.

I read it as comparing the Series S to the Series X - saying the GPU is notably better but it's still limited by the zen2 architecture for emulation

  • Have a Wii and really like it, especially the controllers.

Hoping that Mario kart, etc all work well.

Don't like Mario galaxy at all, is it better with Xbox controllers?

    • Yep

    • Just about all of Mario Galaxy can be played with a gamepad except for the bit where Mario is standing on a ball and you have to use the Wiimote in a upright position.

      • You can do it with a keyboard too, but it's really painful for those parts

      • You can change the profile at those points and make the right stick map to the gyro.

    Is this better than retroarch

    • +18

Oh, hungry troll. Feast! For your answer was buried deep within OP. Had to read all the way through to the second sentence.

there is now a standalone Dolphin emulator instead of just the Retroarch core.

      This gives much better performance.

Anyone play Ecco The Dolphin in their youth?

    • +1

      Great game!

  • +2

wait what! Had no idea you ca install emulators on the series x…

wouldn't you need some sort of jailbreak?

    • +2

It's on the store unlisted, you just need the link for the internet browser which opens the store listing.

    • +1

      No jailbreak needed

    • +1

Nope. There's uwp apps for emulations, which are officially promoted by Microsoft themselves at one point lol

      • Given how litigious Nintendo are about emulators I'm surprised they haven't gone after Microsoft for outright promoting them.

        • Nintendo only ever goes for easy target. They never like drawn out drama or lawsuits.

        • Emulators aren’t illegal. There’s heaps of Nintendo emulators in the Play Store and they’ve never gone after Google, because they can’t.

I’m guessing MS’s don’t like emulators being in their store because it gives people a massive library of games that MS don’t get a cut from.

    • +9

MS are well aware of it. There’s no need to be gatekeeping.

I also checked with the person who releases these to the store before posting the original deal back in 2020 and they were fine with it.

  • When do the links appear for downloading? Am I missing something. I never see them when I go to the site

    • +2

You don’t go to the site, you join their Discord and the links are in the announcements room.

      • Thanks heaps

  • +2

But… Mario galaxy without motion controls is illegal 😂

Nevertheless yes dolphin is so good. There is also dolphinforios which is also very impressive

    • Was going to say this, the motion controls were (actually) well implemented in Mario Galaxy

Press a button to jump and flick your wrist to make Mario spin… No greater joy

      • +1

Press a button jump. Press a button spin.

        • Why even bother with an Xbox controller then? Just use a keyboard if all movements are equivalent

          • +1

@AnonyL: Because 1) USB controllers aren’t supported on the UWP build. 3) Keyboards don’t have analog controls. 2) Who on earth wants to you a keyboard playing in front of for TV?

            • @PainToad: Sorry my point wasn't to literally use a keyboard, but that it's okay to enjoy the motion controls on wii

  • Anyone tried using a Dolphin bar (a Wii remote sensor bar that works with Dolphin on PC) on the Series S?

    • The Xbox doesn't support any other controllers.

  • +2

Would love to try it, but watching the video is it as complicated as in 1000 steps just to get it set up and play games

    • +1

Not really, you no longer need a dev account so skip those steps

  • Anyone played this on PC?

    I don't have an Xbox S but I have two PC's

    2018 build with Ryzen 2600 and RX580

    2022 build with Ryzen 5600g (in-built gfx)

Which one should I install it on?

    • +2

Why not try both? Dolphin doesn’t have that high off system requirements.

    • Both is fine.

    • My gen 2 Core i3 and GT430 can handle most games.
The most taxing games can bog it down, but most run fine

  • Want to know what pc specs would run this smoothly

    • Are you trying to buy a new pc for it? Cause almost, if not all, pcs released nowadays can run it.

or you just wanna know if it runs? If so, tell us your pc's spec.

      • I have a laptop Asus 16GB ram GTX1650 4GB i7 from 2019

        • +1

          More than enough.

New version coming “soon” with a UI for config and the controls fixed. Will be much simpler 🎉

    https://github.com/SirMangler/dolphin/commit/668c485357523c1…

    • Do we have to go through this install process again each time? Or can it update through the store process?

      • +2

Is the update gets released before the current upload is removed your Xbox will auto update.

Otherwise you’ll need to install it again and point the new version to your existing setup on your USB.

  • Genuinely thought this was a game which simulated being a dolphin, you know, swim around, eat fish, play, etc.

    • Brings back Ecco the Dolphin memories

  • +1

New version with GUI and fixed controls is out.

    • I can't seem to get it to see any of my games.

Have added the path in the settings, pointing to the folder on my USB with all the goodies, but it ain't happening.

Edit: I reformatted my USB from exFAT to NTFS, and now it seems to be working. Even though the console and the Dolphin app could see the folders, it wouldn't populate the game list.

      • Did you follow the instructions about setting the right permissions? I don’t think that would of been possible with exfat.

        • To be honest, I just copied it to a USB from my WBFS drive, and assumed it would work how I've used Dolphin on everything else. Didn't realise it needed the USB formatted in a specific way with permissions.

In saying that, it doesn't run the best on my Xbox One S and my phone (with a SD 855+) gives much better performance.

          • @jwh: Yeah special permissions are needed because it’s a UWP app so more locked down than the regular Windows version of Dolphin.

    • +1

Do we have to download again or will it update itself? Edit. It auto updated.

  • Guide in the OP has been updated for the new version.
