In partnership with Mr. Men and Little Miss

Probably just going to be these series of kid's books then. Doesn't say anywhere about what titles/books are being given out.

    Mr Bump the best imo

    • +4

      Mr Haj is my favourite.

      • +1

        He's certainly going places

    • I used to like Mr Bump, but as I got older I learned to appreciate Mr Robot, it's more mature.

Thanks OP - love these free books.

      For Kids only :-)

      • Yes apparently, my husband has banned me from getting anymore despite them being free. They are actually really annoying to read out loud to a child, but said child loves them.

  • The wiggles and Sesame street books they have given away previously were reasonable stories.

Although they are on really flimsy paper to be giving to younger kids.

    • +14

Yeah agree but free is free!

    • +2

We have sticky tapes all over. My child loves reading it every night before bed.

      • Maybe it better for you to lash out at a OP shop or the like to get a $1 hard cover book .

    • The sesame street was horrible

      • +19

Yes, tasted nothing like sesame, or quality street.

        • Quality street was not quality at all

    • +1

Wiggles ones were great life educational books! The Sesame Street ones we found a bit more hit and Miss. some of the Aussie ones were also very strange!

Free is free though and my kid LOVES books and some of the weirder ones are his favourite!

    Free Children’s Book (for Kids)

Every 60 seconds in Africa a minute passes.

  • Thanks OP, will check it out

  • Is it one per family or per child?
Do you have to take your kids with you?

    • +1

Its usually at the entrance. You can just take and go. No one will bother you.

    • I saw that it's free last week and took one. I don't have kids

Mr Ozbargainer and Little Tight-Arse books

    • Ha h a

This is one of the best initiatives in Australia.

First free book is Little Miss Magic.

    • Have you read it? Any good? (I'm not familiar with Little Miss Magic!)

Friendly reminder: your local library will likely have hundreds of children's and youth books available completely for free, and you can probably borrow a couple dozen at a time. Public Libraries rely on your patronage for continued funding, and it's even more important with rising cost of living (imo).

Great deal though from Big W! Anything that can support children's reading development.

    • Public Libraries rely on your patronage for continued funding

How does this work? How do they keep track of who visits their library? (Sometimes I just go and read books with the kids without borrowing anything - especially with the wet weather we've been having!)

      • +2

Each Library has a Collection Services team that tracks which items/collections are popular (via those items being borrowed) and reports those stats to management. In turn, that informs further investment in those type of items i.e. children's books which are popular. However, the team would be aware of children's books being popular with visits - but borrowing those items gives cold hard data to warrant continued funding. :)

    • Absolutely loved going to the library as a kid. I take my kids there now and there's a Nintendo Wii hooked up as well as iPads everywhere. There are far fewer books than there used to be for sure.

      • What library is that, out of curiosity? My local is still almost entirely books in the library itself, but heaps of digital resources on the website.

        • Cabramatta library. It was relatively recently renovated, but they got rid of a lot of books.

          • @Munki: Ah cool, thanks

            • @OfTheOverflow: I partially suspect it might also be the locals not borrowing as many books, so they decided to "modernise" the library and make it more tech-based.

    • We fell out of going to the library in the pandemic (as it was closed) and now get most of our books from op shops for 50c or less. I do like libraries, but you need remember to return the books on time and sometimes my kid gets attached to a particular book then we get whinging when it’s not available.

      • +2

Totally understand if you're happy spending at the op shop instead. I find with children's books, most kids churn through basically as many of the big books as you can get in front of them. My library network (Wollongong/Illawarra) doesn't have any late fees and you can borrow 40+ items at a time, so if the kid gets attached to any book in particular you can buy a shiny fresh copy from Big W or something. You can also just renew all your borrowed books on their app, website or calling so there's def ways to juggle that. Respect though! Someone's gotta buy the op shop books!

    This week’s book.

    https://youtu.be/1I3PkupO0qA

  • I'm presuming this is more likely to be Grug aged kids rather than harry potter?

  • The little men/little miss books are wack and at times downright disturbing.

    • There was a doco on them on SBS recently. I never saw the cartoons but they're pretty funny. For an adult!

  • Is it only 1 book a week?

    • yes

      • Maybe the staff did not know. I got all the books in the first week, was first few shoppers that day :)

  • I did walk into our local Big W and saw Little Miss Magic there by the entrance, but it didn't have a sign saying free or anything… didn't want to end up arrested for trying to get a freebie. Was in a rush though so didn't spend much time looking for someone to ask either

    • Its more an FBI matter

    • It literally says “Free Children’s book” on the cardboard shelving it’s located on

      • Someone tell Bonnyrigg Big W that, because they didn't get the memo then. I went by again today and the only difference is the book on the stand

      • I find this literal stuff most irritating. Why can’t they just say something like “Children’s Book $0 on 24-month contract @ $0 per month with free one month trial for members of the human race”

    • So you saying the door greeter wasn’t around?

      • If they were around then I could've asked someone…

    The free books are:

    Little Miss Magic
    Mr. Bounce
    Little Miss Wise
    Mr. Tall
    Little Miss Happy
    Mr. Cheerful
    Little Miss Curious
    Mr. Nonsense

    • So are you Mr. Nonsense?

When are they going to do free children's books (for adults)?

    • Like this?

      • I'm glad they pointed out that this book of fifteen pages and about 200 words is "unabridged"

  • Went to my local this morning and they had none :( Will try another store or perhaps call before going in to ensure stock.

  • Great for kids my little one has been getting them every week and loves it!

  • That explains why I got a book with my online order :D
