Sydney Tools Refuse to Best Price Guarantee

I was after some tools and Sydney Tools had a promotional spend a certain amount to get a gift. This is why I tried to price match as I wanted the gift without paying full price for my tools. So I called up and the guy tried to price match but told me that he couldn't price match because it was below cost and told me to buy from the retailer I was trying to price match. The only reason they provided was it was below cost.

https://sydneytools.com.au/p/best-price-guarantee

My question is if I should continue trying different store branches to price match since I fulfilled all the requirements and Sydney Tools has failed to uphold their guarantee. Normally if they can't fulfill a price match, they would provide a higher price or different solution. The wording on their best price guarantee is very strong to suggest that they will price match.

I've never bought from Sydney Tools since many ex-employees told me I could get certain brands at certain prices and the store employees wouldn't budge even close to the price.

My question is if I should continue trying different store branches to price match

Depends whether your time.is.worth more than that "gift".

    • the gift is worth over $200 and I plan on getting it at least twice

      • +6

unless the other store has a similar 'gift', why would you be eligible if they price match. Likely any instore promotional offers would be invalid if they are reducing their price to match elsewhere

        • Hence why I asked, they never really got back to me on that question.

    • +24

My guess is it's worth his time. This is literally a guy who has a $160,000 budget for a car, but still commits tax fraud by siphoning diesel from work vehicles, and doesn't consider himself stingy.

I went to Bunnings and asked them to honour their “beat price by 10% guarantee”.

I was asked why did I not just the item from where I saw the cheaper price.

So for for bs price beat guarantees.

I think orificeworks and Bunnings have the same owner.

    • +3

Yeah Officeworks and Bunnings same owner, but I have never had a problem with them. Or even JB HIFI, they can't price match a few but would generally honour discounts

      • +3

Bunnings is a PITA if they do not stock the same model # for power tools as it;s not exactly the same. Bunnings have their own model numbers for allot of the power tools to get around the price match guarantee.

        • -4

I got a bunnings trade rep. Gets me good prices. Even better than discounted competitors

          • +8

@dmbminaret: So they do have their own model numbers then.
Lol says they don’t then proceeds to explain they do.

            • -1

@jimbobaus: I meant they don't make the model numbers. It is a legit model number from manufacturer.

              • +3

@dmbminaret: It’s legit but pre arranged with Bunnings.

                • -2

@berger: Yes of course. It's buying power. Same thing in electrical.

Ever noticed why some laptops are different just slightly between retailers?

                  Officeworks have exclusive dymo labelers.

                  • +3

@dmbminaret: So what you're saying is, Bunnings have their own model numbers.

                    • -1

@[Deactivated]: What I'm saying is manufacturers make exclusive models for big retailers.

                      • @dmbminaret: What you're saying is exactly what the person you responded to was saying. We all know this. You just had to put forward your 5c as though it was an original thought. It's insufferable. Please take this feedback on board.

        • I asked Bunnings why they stopped selling the green bosch power tools. They said, "because mitre 10 sell them, which means we have to price match".

Bunnings have not been the cheapest for most general goods or building materials for years now. But they are typically the most convenient. It is what it is.

    • +1

It's not just price match, it's price beat by 10%.

  • +5

"Sydney Tools reserve the right to terminate or amend the price guarantee policy at any time without notice."

So they can change it at will.

  • +14

told me that he couldn't price match because it was below cost and told me to buy from the retailer I was trying to price match

Fair enough, they don't HAVE to sell items to you below cost and I always say, you should reward the store that gave you the cheap price up front, rather than the store that didn't.

    • -3

Fair enough, they don't HAVE to sell items to you below cos

Uh no? They have a price match policy for a reason. If it is below cost, then that's their problem. They need to honour their policy.

      • +1

        The policy has:
"Sydney Tools reserve the right to terminate or amend the price guarantee policy at any time without notice."

        • +11

It says to terminate or amend the policy itself. ie. update the website and change the policy rules.

Not the right to violate their own written policy.

  • +5

Where is the price beat from?

  • +6

if its that good a deal from the original store with the price, why the hell didnt you post it here?
being greedy and then upset cos it didnt work doesnt wash
buy from the store with original low price

      • +2

        You sound pretty entitled.

        As Mick Jagger once said…

You can't always get what you want

It's probably just some shitty Bluetooth speaker with an inflated RRP so just ignore the bonus gift.

        • -4

Entitlement is a privilege. I don't deal the cards, I got dealt okay hands, I just play the game well.
          Its a $300 bonus gift

      • Does sharing this amazing deal at the other retailer somehow cost you the gift?

        • -1

I normally share deals, I just don't think its worthy of sharing.

    • Sharkyoz message was edited.

  • +2

Some of the other comments seem a bit harsh, but not really sure what else you're after?

Is it in your best interest to get the price match and gift? Yeah probably.
Do they have to 100% give that? Sounds like it's a no.

Just try a few other stores and if none of them budge, you have to decide what is better value i guess.

  • +3

If it's below cost for them then are you certain you've met the condition "The Proof of Price must be from an Australian authorised genuine dealer". Could possibly be a parallel import.

What's the gift (it's gone from $200 value to $300 value) and how much are you spending to get it? I've never heard of this gift policy from them before.

  • +3

    Can you post the deal?

  • +1

The original store was offering you the 'gift' of not wasting your time.

  • +4

This thread is a 'gift' that keeps on giving.

  • +1

    Pam, is that you?

  • +1

maybe things has changed since, but the last time I bothered to read through a price match policy, it usually excludes free gifts/cash backs/lucky draw for a holiday in Bali/etc, just like-for-like price match.

  • +2

It's called double dipping. Normally you can get the reduced price without the bonus, or the item with the bonus at their price. If the bonus is bundled with the product, then they are not the same product to price match.

  • +14

    Why why why
It’s their store mate. They sell or not is up to them. Bloody whingers all the time on this forum about price match entitlement
    Becoming an actual Sydney tool

  • +1

Why is OP being so cagey with what the deal/bonus is?

  • Anyways, I found a better deal with original retailer so Imma get that

    • -1

Can you post the deal for all of us?

      • Sure, I’ll do this later today

        • +1

Remember negotiated deals are not bargains.

          • -1

@Muzeeb: Ah yes… good point that is

          • @Muzeeb: Even so it can still be posted within this thread, just not as its own bargain.

        • +2

          Waiting

        • +1

Link? I can't seem to find it but then I'm not really sure what I'm looking for either.

  • +2

    Dont hold your breath waiting……

  • All this for what is probably a bluetooth speaker/worklight worth $30

  • +2

My experience with Sydney tools and their price matching is that they will have their own model of something with the model number #12345f instead of #12345g at another retailer.

Exact same item but slight difference in model number to avoid price matching especially with online retailers. One of the many reasons I don't got there anymore

  • +4

Don't price beat/match ever. Reward the business offering the better deal

    • -1

Sometimes retailers dont ship because interstate

  • +8

I'm waiting for OP to blame racism for his entitlement and high expectations he should get everything his way.
This was the worst part of retail, the point where its a backwards deal for the sales person (not the store or company if rebates the sales people don't see are involved) sending you backwards in KPI's for someone who never spends any real money, won't be back for anything at normal sale prices etc but wants to bust chops over a one off item offered cheaper elsewhere that they won't shop at.
No doubt he wants the free gift to sell elsewhere to offset the cost of what he bought.

      • +12

Dude close this thread your embarrassing yourself, I've worked in retail and you sound like a nightmare

        • -2

I disagree - I hate stores that offer a pricematch policy and then dick you around when it's that same policy that got you into their store in the first place. I've also worked in retail and you sound like a nightmare rep. You shame customers who are not asking for anything that is not already offered and bullying them into being uncomfortable for queries on promotions that are already being advertised. Price match policies weren't made to give customers a terrible shopping experience. I can imagine that's exactly what you would do as a retail rep. Shame on you.

      • Deals where you'd lose money would put you at a negative GP (gross profit) sometimes at the start of the day or just take a chunk out of your figures later in the day, meaning you had to then sell your way out of the loss (overall sales Vs GP, two different metrics) to then hit daily, weekly & monthly KPIs for sales & profit.
Sometimes it'd go under a managers name (who approved the deal at a loss), other times after being approved you'd take it as the sales person as the sales revenue would still count toward a target, you just take a hit to GP % and need to increase that.
Happy to educate you, however I'm sure it's on deaf ears as you just want your gift.

    • How is any of this OPs problem?
Wasn’t OP simply trying to make a company honour their written word?

      • Agreed. If you don't want to price match - don't advertise that you do.

      • Never said it was, he was just implying a backward KPI was made up. I was clarifying to someone who's clearly never worked retail sales that it happens.
Given OP's entitlement it makes me happy he's not had a price match and a gift just because of how he comes across, like a spoilt child having a tantrum.

Quite simple to withdraw the item from sale or refuse the price match based on a few things which they did.

  • Their company, their rules
Unless what's happened is against any ACCC laws, move on.

    • Yeah and guess what - their rules say that you can price match !

      • +1

Their rules also list several conditions that must be met and OP won't provide any info so it's pretty clear at this point that the price match was refused for not meeting one of those conditions.

        • What makes you say that OP won't provide all the info ? What more info is required ?

          • @[Deactivated]: Well to date they haven't provided any info on what's the item/deal and spend amount for this gift and who's the retailer they're trying to match.

            • @apsilon: That's actually fair enough I agree - more info could be provided. I disagree with the first comment "their company rules move on" until we have this information - I don't think that comment is fair.

  • Which Sydney Tools?

  • +4

I tried to price match something at Sydney Tools Silverwater.

I called, the person on the phone agreed to the price match, generated an invoice, emailed it to me, and asked me to come in.

After driving there, the manager in the store refused to honour the price match and told me to buy it at the store I was trying to price match with. I drove to that store and bought it there instead.

Never setting foot in any Sydney Tools again. The staff were arrogant. They definitely got the name of the business right, describes both the product and the staff.

    • -3

      Yes Thankyou.

  • +1

I was instore at Sydney Tools yesterday and they price matched something on the spot (just showed them another website).

  • -5

Really can't help if you're stuck in some shitty retail job that penalises you for honouring business policies when it comes to price matching. It's pretty simple to not dick around with customers with false promises and guarantees. Companies dont have to pricematch by not advertising it. Well good luck to all that support Sydney Tools, hope you get your warranties honoured cos I know they will dick you around until you go to the ACCC.

I ended up sharing the deal and the extra bargain elsewhere yesterday.

    • They would lose money on the deal so had a reason not to honor it but you didn't post the deal on Ozbargain out of spite even as it cost you nothing… when you promised you would…

You should get a job at Sydney Tools.

  • +1

'our guarantee (subject to the following Terms & Conditions)'

are you sure you met all the terms and conditions ?

when I studied law, a seller's price offer was considered 'an offer to deal' - and the seller could withdraw that offer at anytime - a contract is only formed on exchange of goods or service and consideration (usually money).

so- just as there is no obligation on a customer to buy just because they walk into a store - there is no obligation to sell at any point up to the exchange of money and goods/service.

you didn't pay the money ? - then the seller can suggest you STFU and GTFO
