Thousands of Etsy sellers are on strike this week after the company increased the fees they charge sellers by 30%.

    • +26

The way its being phrased I thought they meant they'd increased it from 5% to 30% which is outrageous.

But Etsy are increasing their fee from 5% to 6.5% - so an increase of 30% of 5%…

Not sure that's worthy of a blackout…people seem to have forgotten how badly PayPal and eBay got over the years.

I used to get charged like 8-9% on sales. I believe its now 12% or higher…

To be fair, it seems if you also make under $10,000 in sales, you're also charged 12% in offsite marketing fees, which you can't opt out of.

        • Bargain . Someone should post this deal

        • Granted not being able to opt out is annoying but offsite sale only make up a small percentage of storage sales.

        • You can opt out, I've done it.

          • @SwarleyAUS: Not if you've ever hit $10k in a single year, then you're locked in for life even if you only make $500 the next year.

      • not really sure where you'd get idea that the increase is from 5% to 30% when all I wrote is that Etsy have 'increased the fees they charge sellers by 30%'. I think it's less down to my phrasing and more down to your reading. In any case, increasing fees by 30% would have a significant impact on sellers.

so if I mad $1000 more salesI paid extra $15 in fees… I guess if your margin was that thin then it's not really a good business to start off with. Ebay charges me 12% including payment currently and the selling experience is shocking. Also being forced to have to send everything via registered post, even for a $2 keyring and if you not rated as "top seller or good seller" by their very vague rating system, you have to pay even higher fees. Feedback still just a positive or negative, keep on telling me feedback doesn't matter in their rating system yet that's all the buyers see when they look at your user at a glance.

      • I’ve boycotted ebay long time ago… they suck now… a new similar ebay platform should prevail

        • eBay still have global reach, for a trusted way to sell items,
that no other platform has beaten yet.

        • I use AliExpress if something isn't urgent. Most of the time the same items I find from Ebay can be found on AliExpress anyway for cheaper.

But be warned there are some dodgy sellers on AliExpress (majority have been fine) who mark the item as sent and provide a tracking number. But a week later the tracking still shows no information. Contacted the seller about it, got no response then couple days later I find the the tracking shows shipping cancelled which means the seller didn't send the item… Had to dispute the order didn't get sent, i.e. refer to tracking info, and got a refund. AliExpress' dispute system works well, I got the refund within 30 mins of me raising it. But that does meant lost some days waiting for the item to move and having to manually check the tracking to make sure it's on the way etc.

So just got to be a bit more vigilant with AliExpress orders. I still use them.

  • Good to buy 3d models

    • Like the STLs or physical prints? Instead of buying prints getting a cheap printer for <$150 could be worth it pretty quickly.

  • good for 50%

  • Any tips on finding good listings/bargains on Etsy? Never really used it

    • Used these deals occasionally to buy home organisation labels.

Biggest problem I have with Etsy is shipping. Most things I want are overseas and find shipping ridiculously high.

    • +4

You can filter by shipping from Australia / free shipping.

Good spot to buy Mum a nice hand made card.

  • Does cash rewards still work if I use PayPal as payment method?

    • +2

      It worked for me.

I paid with PayPal and received tracking within a few mins.

  • I hate these deals with a huge percentage discount and a pathetic actual dollar cap. I feel like they get unwarranted attention. This deal is literally only useful for a $20 purchase on Etsy.

    • Yes the small cap is a little annoying. Maybe one day they can increase it.
