    Serious question… are these courses ever actually any good?

    I know there are ratings, etc. but I’m keen to hear from below ozbargainers.

      You do occasionally find some decent freebies out there, but for the most part I find freebies listed in posts like this one are a good way to find out if you’d be interested in a topic, or to get a general overview of something.

      If you’re serious about learning a topic and you’re going to be putting in many hours on a course, it makes more sense to drop $20 for one of the top rated courses when they go on sale (add it to your wish list).

      I’ve found the ratings to generally be a good indication for quality, but also consider how many ratings have been submitted (e.g. a course with a 5 star rating from a small number of reviews might be bogus).

      In addition to ratings, it’s worthwhile watching some of the preview videos to see if the instructors teaching style clicks with you. From viewing the previews you might also identify that the audio is recorded badly or you could just find the instructor downright annoying. Remember you’re going to be listening to this same person speaking for hours. I’ve enrolled to several programming courses on Udemy, and you start to figure out which instructors work for you. Some skip over too many details, and some provide too much detail.

      I don't think anyone should take Udemy seriously. I certainly wouldn't pay for a course.

      I'd sooner look at edX, but frankly most of these topics you can learn elsewhere online for free. The bottleneck is going to be the willingness to consistently apply yourself, not the price of the course.

      They're ok if you can understand your own learning and where you need to improve along the way. There is very little checking for understanding with these courses, and most free courses simply do not have a way for you to easily ask for assistance from the lecturer. I completely understand as these are cheap to begin with, but a lot of these topics can be learnt through Youtube tutorials (especially the Python/coding courses). I'm currently taking coding at Uni so the in-depth courses can provide me with extra explanations which have been beneficial during the mid semester break.
