Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 4G $0 on Optus 30GB Choice Plus Data Plan $12.50/Month for 12 Months @ Optus

11571

This one started today, but I went into my Optus App to get it and there was a 50% off data sim offer that stacked with the $0 Tablet.

Has to be 30gb data plan or above.

So my deal was

$12.50 x 12 Months
Tab A8 64gb 4G
30 GB Data added to my data pool
$150 total cost.

Talk to customer service. The 50% off data sim only for $45 plan

    • They are incorrect or the website is incorrect.

  • $0.00 per month Interest free device payments if you remain on a Data Plan for 36 months.

So can you leave after 12 months?

    • +2

      Just select 12months plan.
They decrease the fee for the tablet for longer commitment, but can't do lower than $0 anyway… :-)

  • thanks op tracked with cashrewards ref "Optus - Postpaid 22-07-2022 AUD $526.30 $30.00 Pending" had the $10 cashrewards offer too so hopefully it stacks and all tracks. tempted to order another one for another kid. has anyone tried shopback or does it only pay out for prepaid and did it track?

  • +4

I love the deal, but I reckon it’s an error that’s supposed to be applied to 36 months of plan rather than 12 months - hence the minimum cost showing ~$500 even on the contracts ppl are posting.

I can foresee people having a lot of fights with Optus in 12 months over this and having dealt with them before on contract pricing issues with a phone, I’m just gonna stay away.

Good luck to all though !

    • +1

Just do screen shots of all steps of cart

      • +6

You’re overestimating the competence of Optus support staff - and that includes the higher level Aus based staff you’ll eventually get onto after months of arguing lol

        • I've had Optus reneg on an offer like this years ago, just got to get the TIO involved. They make it as much a pain as possible, but prob worth it given the deal.

    • -1

True. I left Optus years ago, and the were a pain to deal with. They were hugely incompetent, which funnily resulted in a discount carrying across to a new plan it was not intended for, saving us $150. But yeah, who knows how this will end.

I was tempted, but I have no real use for a low-performance tablet.

  • Is the data plan esim compatible?

  • A good deal indeed. I hope everyone who is buying this is also adding in the Optus Sport Subscription Disc additional for $0 per month.

    • You can do it through sub hub too

    • +2

Is the discount for 1 month or is it included with the plan? I'm assuming free with the plan but on the contract, under optus sport subscription disc, it says 1 month.

  • +2

I have absolutely no reason to buy this. Is it irrational of me not to buy it anyway?

    • +1

If you don't, you will be banned from Ozbargain permanently for not being fully committed.

      • Lmao

      • +7

        look, he got banned

  • So I got 2 for me and the missus, I just hope I chose the things right. So if I did 64gb tab on 12 month plan for $12.50/mo I will not require to pay anything past the 12 months?

    • +1

You need to call up to cancel the sim plan or else it will revert to $25/month

      • +2

Also best to set a Google/Telegram reminder for 11.5 months etc, if you cancel upfront you're paying $150 for a single month.

  • Current paying 7.50 for the lowest data plan to just tap into my wife's 500G plan. Will I be able to upgrade that sim to the offer?

    • They offered me the option on step 2 or 3. But I get 25gb for $7.5 so didn't go ahead.

    • Depending on what your existing ones are, if it's not "choice plus" you won't be able to data share.

  • +3

contract is king. clearly states 12 month term @12.50 per month on my pdf contract attachment.

    • +1

For the data plan, yes. As for the device repayments, it says "$0.00 per month Interest free device payments if you remain on a Data Plan for 36 months."

I'm not sure those conditions are being met.

      • +4

when selecting 12 months, the next stage during checkout states

        Product Summary
        Mobile service
        Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 | 64GB | Grey | Physical SIM

Device Repayment Charges over 12 months $0.00 p/m
Includes a $44.04 monthly device discount when you stay on an eligible Optus plan.

        • Thanks for that. Didn't have the time to read it all properly.

My cart said "Includes a $14.68 monthly device discount when you stay on an eligible Optus plan.", hence the confusion.

      • Doesn't say that (36 months) on the contract

        • Contract is legit. All clear in there.

  • Thanks OP, great deal.

Got my $30 cashback tracking confirmation as a potential bonus.

Hope this deal is not an error but need to be in it to win it.

  • How does a 12 month plan @ $25, become a $500+ minimum cost ?

    • $528.48 for the tablet before they discount full 1/12th per month over the year.

  • +3

Managed to grab one. Contract is legit as well so it doesn't seem that we will have any issues when terminating contract by the end of 12 months.

    • Yep.
Contract correctly shows Tablet @ $44.04/month for 12 months then below says discount of same amount for 12 months

  • Boo…128gb disappeared

    • +2

Get a micro sd ,you can build it up to 1TB

    • +1

If you click the link from the 1st comment of deal, you still can see 128gb option.

      • Seems to disappear when I try via cash rewards

  • -6

Correct me if im wrong, for those who usually use their tablet at home with wifi, the wifi version is $303.2 on the edu store or corporate store, a few dollars more expensive but save the hassle of having to apply for a plan and then remembering to cancel after 12 months.

    • +2

      100% more?

      • +3

And 4g instead of wifi. Why wouldn't you take that offer up? Worst case scenario you'll pay $25 a month for the month you may forget to cancel.
        No brainer really.
        + You get 30gb
+ You get sub hub if new customer

        • +3

which sub hub? I am a new customer but didn't seen any free sub hub

    • Isn't this OzBargain?

How is that method a bargain?

    • My bad I thought $25 per mth is after 50%off

  • +1

    Cheers OP, grabbed a 64GB.

    Then grabbed a 128GB, couldnt've of slept 2nite otherwsie..

    • Was tempted to go for 128GB model as well but need to stay for 36 months to make it worthwhile and even then the discount is not as attractive as the 64GB

      • in hindsight yes, paying an extra ~$60 for 64GB when i could've just put an SD card in worth a few $$.

Ima bad OzBargainer.. Had FOMO & clearly wasn't thinking.

    • +1

      "…couldnt've of…"

Can't say I've seen that written down before.

      • too many beers, lol..

        cant edit now either..

  • Reading comments above. Did anyone take screenshots?

    • +1

Just grab a copy of your contract on the confirmation page. Everything is written down

      • closed the page :(

    • They normally send you an email confirmation anyway. If you need to, you can always go to the my optus app to chat and get them to confirm the order details, once hapoy get them to send you the transcript.

  • This is insane!
Just got grilled by my partner though lol

    • For buying it? Why? It's a good deal.

      • +1

        Tell her that. I agree.

        • For less than a meal a month you get a tablet that you can use to watch movies, play games, etc. I would be angry if you didn't buy it.

          • +1

@FiloGuy: I told her but she has asked me to tell you that I bought a new iPad a month ago. Lol.

  • I assume this model has no problem playing Netflix?

    • +1

None at all - my kids have been using one for Netflix since I got it a few weeks ago.

    • +1

This is the reason why I bought it. And crunchyroll as well

    • I'm on UHD plan for netflix, but it only plays videos in SD in this tablet. Netflix app setting says Widevine L3, maximum playback resolution: SD

  • Did anyone receive order confirmation email?

    • yep but the pds link is not working

      • Open the link, go to the start of the link and take out the second https/
        Mine looked like this https://https/www.optus

    • Yup immediately

      • Weird - both my partner and I didn't receive any email

        • No email on my end. I'm contacting them on live chat

          • @Charbel91: My order is apparently with credit referral team for manual review and email will only come after successful review.

            • @Ash-Say: Thanks for the heads up. Maybe it's the same issue on my end or its because the email listed on my account has an au at the end of the com 🤦🤦🤦🤦

    • +1

      didnt receive anything after ordering

  • What's the credit check situation?

    • It is post paid, so will be a hard enquiry on your file.

  • +3

For anyone who wondering about the minimum charge, the way Optus has been "calculating" and shown them on the contract is the amount they will charge you if you sign up and instantly cancel it. So you won't be eligible for any discount.
It would be the total device cost + 1 month plan fee without any discount.

    • It would be the total device cost + 1 month plan fee without any discount.

      No, that's not right.

It's 11 months of device payments + 1 month discounted plan fee.

      $44.04 x 11 + $12.50 = $496.94

Another way to look at it is: Full device cost + 1 month discounted plan fee - 1 month device discount

      $528.48 + $12.50 - $44.04 = $496.94

  • Performance should be better than a Chromebook duet?

  • Ordered two thanks OP.

  • does this come with a charger?

    • +1

      Yes it does

    • +1

The A7 came with a pretty poor charger (5W i think), but the Tab itself supported 15W ("Fast Charging" using QC 3.0)

  • Wonderful deal.

  • How are people ordering 2? I put in an order for 1, but have now gone in and tried to order another (and hopefully total of 3 for 3 kids), but I am having no luck ordering a 2nd. Tried with same optus ID, no luck, says will contact me in 48 hours, etc.

Did people have to order 2 in same order or did they do 2 different orders?

    Thx

    • I ran two seperate orders and it worked with no problem. I had an exisiting Optus account and did it through the the Optus app.

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one

  • Thanks OP, ordered one

Hopefully this bit of text won't cause issues 12 months down the track

    Summary of charges
    Monthly payment $12.50
Minimum total cost of $496.94 over your selected contract terms includes your
chosen add-ons for their minimum term. SIM plan price, inclusions and add-ons
may change if your plan changes.

  • +9

For those who ordered this, it might be a good idea to put a calendar reminder to cancel this in 11-12 months' time, e.g. March/April-2023.

    • Yea, I will do that

    • -3

I have a feeling we won't need to since I doubt this will be honoured.

  • Got one through chat. Thanks op.

  • +1

Thanks OP ordered one. Will the SIM work in a wifi dongle?

    • A sim is a sim, it has data enabled, so yes..

      • Ok thanks. I thought some telcos restrict the usage of data sims based on the imei of certain devices. Wasn't sure whether Optus was one of them.

  • Why doesn't it work for me? I have a prepaid account with optus, when I put into shopping cart it's still $25 plan. Does it suppose to show $12.5 plan from the start? FYI I tried both phone app and laptop browser :(
