Back with another Zigbee smart home deal and this time I've organised a pack of sensors with an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 Hub and Gateway that's essential for setting up any Zigbee sensors, as well as a Water Leak, Motion and Temp/Humidity Sensor. This has all you need to get started with Zigbee or if you're looking to upgrade or expand your existing smart home network.

The Hub M1S is an upgraded version of the original Aqara Zigbee Hub/Gateway. Featuring Zigbee 3.0 with support for up to 128 devices with better energy efficiency, built in speaker that can be used as an alarm, doorbell etc. when a sensor is trigger, RGB light that can serve as a night light with the illumination sensor or be triggered by other sensors, 2x2 MIMO WiFi for better connection and compatible with Aqara Home, Mi Home, Apple Homekit, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

The Aqara Water Leak sensor can be configured to do tasks like sending you a notification, triggering an alarm on the Aqara M1S or another sensor when water is detected. A really good place to put this is behind your washing machine.

The Aqara Motion Sensor provides 170⁰ degree motion detection with an adjustable stand and can be configured to trigger other sensors when motion is detected. This includes an alarm on the Aqara M1S, a notification to your phone, turning on smart lights and more. Useful for turning lights on when you enter a room or being notified when someone breaks into your home.

The Aqara Temperature Humidity Sensor is designed to detect the temperature and humidity levels. Like the other sensors it can be configured to trigger other devices like a smart power plug, humidifier, air purifier and more when it detects a certain temperature or humidity level.

  • Can anyone please help me understand where would you place the water leak sensor?

I did mention that in the deal. Behind the washing machine is one of the best places. I didn't realise mine was leaking until I was repainting a room on the otherside of the wall and the carpet under some furniture was damp.

Hot water cylinder is another good spot.

I also have one behind my dishwasher FWIW

Behind washing machine, dishwasher, next to the bathtub (in case someone forgot to close the water tap), next to bidet, underneath the sink

    • I've got them under the sinks, behind the fridge which has plumbed in water but the one that saved my a$$ was the one under the hot water system. Mine ruptured and the leak sensor caught it instantly, could of caused big damage.

Also it can be a good idea to put them in a large shallow container in some circumstances. Like under hot and cold taps if you put the sensor in the middle, the water might leak from one tap and drain away from the sensor. So the container can catch the water over a wide area and ensure the sensor is triggered.

    • I've got a series of them in the garage to detect flooding, plus in the laundry next to the front foot of the freezer. If the door doesn't get shut properly, a bit of ice melts, creates a puddle and sends an alert before any of the food is spoiled.

  • I bought the Xiaomi (non Aqara) starter pack and the sensors won't import to Google Home no matter what I do. Would this one have better luck with Google integration? And will the non-Aqara Xiaomi sensors pair to this hub?

    • +1

Apparently an update months ago broke the Xiaomi sensors but not the Aqara sensors so this would continue to work. There's some discussion and apparent fixes at the bottom of this post that may help.

You can pair Aqara and Xiaomi fine to this hub. Other brands would require something like Home Assistant.

    • Not directly answering your question, but you can’t do much with sensors in Google Home. You cannot trigger any automations/routines, or see the sensor status in the app or on Nest Displays. The only way is to ask Google the state of the sensor, i.e. is the door open? This is a Google Home limitation that effects all sensors.

    • It's possible that HomeAssistant can help you with this. Great little app that I've started to get into for all my home automation needs, however it does take a bit of time to learn and discover. Stick it on a Raspberry Pi or mini PC using Docker

  • Thanks Clear!

ps. Would love a deal on the Aqara TVOC sensor: https://www.aqara.com/en/product/tvoc-air-quality-monitor

  • I am interested and want to buy more of these sensors, but the only thing stopping me is, what's the guarantee that these would stop working outside China after a software update in future? Would these be comparable to a Global version?

    • +2

Operates on Zigbee so you can pair it with something like Home Assistant that doesn't communicate with anything outside of your own network

  • If I buy this, will I need to buy an adaptor to use the Hub plug?

    • +1

AFAIK it uses the CN 3 pin plug. Basically ours but a bit thinner without the insulation and upside. So it should be fine.

      • Thank you.
