      • There are many of those on 'eligible payments" that have never worked a day in their lives.

        Righto, Pauline

        • Please explain?

      • +4

A lot of unemployed people can't avoid fuel excise…
They would also be paying GST on a lot of stuff they buy…

You don't actually need to work to pay tax.

        • +4

You don't actually need to work to pay tax.

Those that are on benefits who have never worked a day in their life - where do they get money from to pay that tax?

        • +1

hang on a sec, you might be onto something here!
Are you saying I don't have to use my centrelink money to pay this GST on the grocery i bought the other day?
Sweet, might go to wollies tonight and tell them not to charge me GST.

      • And how many fought in WW2, Vietnam, Kora, Afghanistan?

F**k them and what they saw.

        • +2

Not all Vets who have deployed to those areas get the $$ though. And many ex and current adf members who have done nothing but milk the adf for benefits will get it.

      • You know where the bulk of the payments go right? Pensioners.

    • -1

      no.

you are actually getting $250 of my taxes that I am paying to pay for it.

1/4 are getting a payment, those 1/4 pay hardly any tax anyway.

      • There is no way you're paying even $0.01 of their $250. You might be paying ~$0.01 of their total yearly Centrelink benefits.

        • You know what I mean. Stop being facetious.

    • Should have worked 60mins then….

      • -2

Congrats, only person that couldn’t help themselves to be a SA lol

        • shrug
just seems that if you'd worked 60mins instead of 30mins you could have had a better day….

Won’t be getting this one, but will probably get the $420 tax offset. Won’t be buying anything specific, just using it for general expenses/household budget, which would be the sensible thing for most people eligible for the $250 to do.

    • +2

which would be the sensible thing for most people eligible for the $250 to do

If the $250 gets spent on mostly sensible things, I'll eat my hat.

I remember when they had to munt the baby bonus payments because of all the 14yo's getting pregnant so they could by a plasma TV and a new playstation.

        • Old Gerry Harvey will be rubbing his hands together I think.

        • +2

Australia’s growth rate is too slow and unless it increases we will need to rely on immigrants. One plasma tv tor another Australian born baby sounds like a bargain. It was good policy if it worked as you described.

            @AustriaBargain: Don't worry.

The retirement age will be 75Y by 2030 and 85Y by 2035.

          • @AustriaBargain: It's about quality, not quantity imo.

            • @cookie2: You don't think the average child is good enough, should only rich people who send their kids to private schools (women of calibre?) should participate in an engineered baby boom?

      • Likewise. Better keep an eye out for good deals on hats, this looks to be the cheapest at the moment, but not necessarily the best https://www.kmart.com.au/product/witchs-hat-42923060/

        • but not necessarily the best

Not sure about that, witches hats are in style at the moment, and that has the added bonus of the spider web print. I'd eat it.

I don't get it. Happy that we are printing even more money though, it's fantastic.

      The ink is getting dry.

It makes sense to unclog the nozzle with a good old fashioned spending spree just before an election.

      • +2

Yes, I wonder what the motive could possibly be, handing out "free" money at election time.

    • +2

      Haha,

How to reduce inflation and pay back a $1 trillion debt.

      PRINT MORE MONEY!

        • Worked for America many times indeed! (How are they still able to do it though?)

I thought this $250 one off payment was just an attempt to buy votes. How silly of me…

  • +2

    Deposit on a 4series gfx card….

  • +21

lol @ $250. That isnt even a weeks groceries for most families. This is a last ditch vote grab by a government sinking in their own filth and trying to buy their way out of the shit swamp of their own creation.

    • +5

$250 gets you 2 loaves of bread, 2 3l coles brand milks, and a bag of carrots lately.

      • +1

pollie probably think that will get you a month off grocery, ask them how much bread and milk cost!

  • +3

The average Ozbargainer is on $100k a year apparently so very few of us will be eligible.

    • +10

We need to step up our game, whirlpoolians average $250k from memory.

  • +1

Not eligible, but $250 is hardly enough to get excited about.

Merged from $250 Is a Drop in a Bucket

    https://7news.com.au/sunrise/on-the-show/millions-of-austral…

Look im all for helping people struggling to make ends meet, with CPI at 5.1% it will affect the poorest people the most.

Look $250 might be a lot of money for those receiving it (i dont know) personally i feel like it is a drop in a bucket

Now forgetting there is an election in 5 weeks does anyone else feel like the government needs to do more to help cost of living?

i support the reduction in fuel tax as i think this brings down supply chain costs as well as costs at the browser to relieve some cost of living pressures.

But i kind of feel like a once off $250 payment is a bit of 'useless' and very short sighted idea from the federal government. I think reduction in power costs, car registration, lowering taxes esp for low income earners ie tax free thresh-hold pushed higher etc would be a more meaningful ways to help people.

    Poll Result
    • The once off payment is a joke (9 votes)
    • It is a good way to help those who need it (0 vote)
    • There are better ways to help easy cost of living pressures (2 votes)
    • Trying2SaveaBuck you need to get a life (3 votes)
    • This government? "Short-sighted"? Say it ain't so.

$250 a week UBI would be a good start

      • not sure where we would find the hundreds of billions needed for that, even cracking down on large corp tax rorts isn't going to cover the bill for that.

        • -1

Assuming this is for every adult citizen, so 20 million give or take, it'd only cost the government $260 billion a year at $13000 a head

We already spend $82 billion on pensions and aged care, plus $36 billion on the NDIS, $21 billion on family assistance, $19 billion for disability support, $13 billion on the child care subsidy, $10 billion on carer support, and $11 billion for jobseekers, plus a few more billion from smaller programs plus state welfare programs

Considering that'd be taxable income, the actual cost to the government would be less than $100 billion a year after condensing a bunch of these welfare payments into UBI

          • +1

            @Jolakot:

Assuming this is for every adult citizen, so 20 million give or take, it'd only cost the government $260 billion a year at $13000 a head

            Awesome.

The AUD will go -99.99% in about 5Y.

          • @Jolakot: There are about 2.6 million pensioners in Australia, that is a cost of just over $600 a week. You are way way over estimating the cost savings by just saying the current people on benefits get no more. The overall cost would be close to 200 billion. around 40% of the current government tax take.

what you are really advocating for is not a UBI, but a change to wealthfare as you are proposing those on benefits already don't get the UBI or have the UBI replace part of their benefits and others getting more. Leaving out the horrible inflation and other detrimental economic effects you basically want those most vulnerable to be even worse off than they are now.

    • +1

      More like an insult.

    • car registration

      Isn't that state revenue?

    • They could stop printing money?

Over 50% of money supply was added since covid. That $250 today has the same value as $125 in 2019.

Costs are going to double everywhere and the dollar is going to dive, thanks to the fantastic economic managers.

Normal Monky tired of slaving for banana in jungle where banana not worth anything anyway.

support the reduction in fuel tax

Temporary reduction….the gov continually mentions this but very conveniently leaves out the word temporary when discussing it.
They can't use that as a claim to be helping battlers with inflation when it was brought in mostly due to price rises due to oil prices….
And it reverts back to normal post election

    • +1

fuel tax doesn't affect the supply chains much as businesses already get tax credits for tax on fuel.

Not really I barely earn just enough to be not eligible (exactly what they mean when saying government is putting the middle income earners under bus to die)

        A lot of factors like
        age
        family
        income
        rent
        etc.

rule me out of centrelink benefits right now, by only earning like very slightly over the threshold.

Honestly speaking no one should be getting these payments,
government should instead increase people's wages and stop funding laziness in the society.

But honestly man do feel like I am wasting my time working, could simply earn half of what i earn from work soon, if i decide to stay at home just on centrelink (with ofcourse reduced income, but increase time availability)

        • -2

I'll have your job if you don't want it

          • @Diji: It sucks but at least youre contributing towards super.

            • @OzCheapo: @Diji can't use the money until 66Y and 70Y by 2030 and 75Y by 2035.

              • @rektrading: Still money bro

                • @OzCheapo: But the 💵 isn't @Diji 's until they cash it out.

People seem to think that they own the 💵 in pension funds and it's a safety net. The money belongs to the fund and it isn't safe until people cash it out.

              • @rektrading: No As far as I have heard, can still use that Super money towards first home, could have used it last year during pandemic stock market fall (but ofcourse I didn't)

                • @USER DC: You'll have to wait for the next black 🦢 to raid the funds.

                • @USER DC:

No As far as I have heard, can still use that Super money towards first home

Some dodgy things but can still withdraw some money from super.

                    • @USER DC: That is making extra voluntary contributions as savings, but in your super fund. You can't use your compulsory super for a house deposit.

          • @Diji: Unless you're regional or you're being selective, there are so many jobs out there atm.

        • I can relate to everything you expressed.

  • When do we receive it? I've never received any payment from the Gov in my bank account and I'm not even a super high earner.

    :(

    Love from Scomo

  • +3

Congrats to those who are so unsuccessful in life to be eligible.

    • +5

There, but for the grace of god, goes me.

    • +2

      Carers are eligible you know…

      • Would love to know why the neg, full time carer for my dad and the carers payment is piss all. Apparently that makes me unsuccessful.

        • -1

I guess a successful person would be able to afford a full time carer rather than live off a full time carers wage. If quitting to a job to be a full time carer was the best choice financially, I don’t think that person was financially successful.
It is admirable that is for sure.

      • Yes, carers payment is poor and doesn't allow enough flexibility to earn income too. And worst of all, the entitlement to get it is also based on income and assets of the person being cared for, not the person that wants to do the caring. Take care

  • +3

Pretty sure 99% of ozbargain will be ineligible……

    • Make that 100%. Ozbargainers earn over 100k in the last survey.

      • Darn, I don't make the cut. Some $6K short. Gotta haul my bum out more often to bump that number up

        • OzB membership terminated. Do to low income.
