Not eligible and it annoys me that my tax money is being given away

    • +1

It'll be returned when the shoppers spend it

  • +5

8 years of a right wing 'small' and 'anti-tax' government and you get $250 back…

Pretty sure 'small government' is code for doing f*** all and convincing everyone that's a good thing.

    • Pretty sure 'small government' is code for doing f*** all and convincing everyone that's a good thing.

No, it's meant to be government doing healthcare, education, policing and defence, and apart from that, staying the f out of people lives.

      • +2

8 years and they've done fa for all that stuff too. Not sure what this crowd DOES do except sit back and take the money.

        • -1

The same thing all of them do. Take tax money, waste it, provide substandard services, waste more money, rort money, give contracts to friends and family, argue about bullshit like children. I've probably missed some things, but you get the gist.

      • +4

healthcare, education, policing and defence, and apart from that..

        thats it?
        no infrastructure?
        no future planning?
so no social services for aged or disability?
        no environmental planning or management?
        etc etc
man, they seem to be wasting a lot of time on stuff thats not part of their role….

        • -2

You know what I mean. Supplying essential services, not getting into every aspect of peoples lives.

      • No, it's meant to be government doing healthcare, education, policing and defence, and apart from that, staying the f out of people lives.

Spot on Scomo's policy. Fire fighting and natural disaster response is apparently not a concern of a 'small government'.

  • +5

Small payment that I'm not eligible for but will end up paying. The hard working ones again don't get anything.

Quite astonishing that 25% of Aussies are eligible, no wonder our tax rates are so high.

    • +2

I rather pay a higher tax if it means a better future for all Australians, which ultimately makes our expendable income more

      • -2

Giving out random money that hasn't been earned simply devalues that money, making things more expensive, and exacerbating the problem.

  • +2

I honestly don't understand the $250, it literally solves nothing long term. Even short-term does nothing.

    • This isn't anything new. Of course it doesn't solve anything short/long term, it's just a free hit which may sway a very small portion of votes. The govt also hopes that the $250 will go through the economy faster than a dodgy curry and will generate activity and ultimately more tax revenue. In theory they see it as a win/win. In reality, who knows as there's no accurate way of measuring this crap.

  • +5

The money will surely buy many votes.

Unfortunately what should have been done was not done.

Which is … raise taxes by at least 5% on the top 25% of society to benefit all.

People can live without overpriced GPUs and exotic cars, but not food and water.

It’s time for Australia to wake up to proper wealth redistribution

    • It’s time for Australia to wake up to proper wealth redistribution

      Lol

    • +3

don't say this too loud around here, you'll be negged because apparently poor people don't deserve rights and they will get called unsuccessful for receiving a measly $250, for what the site is worth, you wouldn't expect much "rich" people here yet here we are

        • +4

If you truly believe that people with lower income are there simply because they don't work hard enough (and vice versa) you have a very tenuous grip on reality…

          • -1

@NigelTufnel: How hard do you think a surgeon worked in school? How hard did they work in the many many years of university? If you don't think they have worked harder, and continue to, than someone who dropped out of school in year 10, and works at coles, you have a tenuous grip on reality…

            • +3

@brendanm: There's a hell of a lot more to having the opportunity and ability to do well at school and go to university than simply working hard…

There's also a lot of jobs that require a lot more work (and are arguably more useful to society) than others, yet pay less.

              • @NigelTufnel:

There's a hell of a lot more to having the opportunity and ability to do well at school and go to university than simply working hard…

Everyone has the opportunity in Australia. If people aren't keen on the education system, there are lots of other jobs that pay well, that don't require year 12 or university. They do require putting in work though.

There's also a lot of jobs that require a lot more work (and are arguably more useful to society) than others, yet pay less.

Then don't do them? Choose a job that pays more if that's what you are after.

Just an FYI, the wealthiest taxpayers pay about 80% of the income tax in this country.

                • @brendanm: Everyone has "different opportunities" in Australia. So many factors that impact this. Please provide some examples of the jobs that pay well for a full-time wage?

                  • @cookie2: Go to seek.com.au and look. Or is that too hard?

        • +1

What a simplistic and disappointing view you have of welfare. You think because someone earns more money, they ‘work harder’?

Are you aware that the vast majority of those eligible for this payment are not just people who didn’t ‘work hard’ in life? Have you thought about the disabled, the pensioners, the carers, the single parents, the people who become unemployed suddenly and can’t find another job? Those on welfare are not just lazy people who don’t want to work. This misconception needs to die and stay dead. Stop reading the Herald Sun and watching network news and maybe you won’t buy into this abhorrent narrative, which is fed to everyone the moment a whiff of an increase to welfare payments is mentioned.

Your completely simple, and frankly incorrect assessment is exactly why this country looks down on people who have to go on these payments just to survive or make ends meet, most of which do so from no fault of their own.

I say this as someone who isn’t on these payments, and never has been, and earns a very decent salary. Far more than my nurse wife who I would say wholeheartedly works harder in her role than I do as a mere office lackey. Try and get some perspective and empathy for others in the community who aren’t as well off as you.

          • +1

@Rupture: I was talking about people asking for "more wealth redistribution". You going off on a wild tangent just looks silly.

I stated above that the highest earners already pay 80% of the I come tax in the country, how much more do you think they should pay?

I have no problem at all with people getting support who need it. Some people are unable to work, and should be supported.

Also, I'm not the person who stated that people are "unsuccessful" if they can receive this payment, and actually disagree with that statement.

I simply don't think that people who have worked hard to get where they are should continually have to foot the bill for everyone. The government could actually remove tax loopholes, so that businesses actually pay tax to start with.

        • High income doesn't equate to harder work.

    • That's all we need. More redistribution of wealth. Taxing the top 25% of society doesn't benefit all - it certainly doens't benefit the top 25%…

Bad policy, not low taxes, are to blame for food/energy/water issues.

  • +10

Getting it because we have disabled children, already spent it on said children for disability services not covered by NDIS due to their plan running out of funding.

    • I feel for you. The dishonest dodge and scam the ndis system and the honest have to constantly fight and push for funding to cover or be increased. Gets me so frustrated when I see it. So much ndis funding that could be better redistributed to other participants.

  • +2

They should give them a $1000 payment.. :).. most of the poor will spend it on food, cloths, fun.. the thinf is that they will spend… and that has a knock on effect that helps everyone.. if they save it like most of us do the effect is zero

    • +2

They should give them a $1000 payment

if they save it like most of us do the effect is zero

Our economy is terrible right now. Printing money out of thin air is one of the reasons we have high inflation.

I doubt people who need it will be saving the $250, they would need it to fight the immediate pressure of everything going up.

  • +2

eating a steak then going back to mince meat.

  • +2

    Thanks ScoMo, for the hookers!

    • How many roots can you get for $250?

      • 0.5

  • +1

Taking a taxi to the polling booth to suggest school halls and home insulation are a little better value for worth than throwing a few million at a bunch of mates to make up a 'better' story about the Barrier Reef, or paying a non-functioning alcoholic religious fruit loop a few hundred thousand for a couple of top-secret text messages while he was on time-out for an invalidating mistake on his job application…

  • Rent

  • Eneloops of course

  • -4

For people complaining about receiving the $250 and that it won't do much give it back then. Bunch of whingers!

    • If someone is starving and given bread crumbs, if they complain they're still hungry should they return the bread crumbs?

  • +4

its stupid. the money wont help in the long run. and everyone is feeling the increased costs, not just the lower income people that this targets.
they need to figure out a long term plan.

    • -2

they need to figure out a long term plan.

Create a time machine, go back two years, don't hand out money like it's going out of fashion.

      • +5

And for the amazing financial management and growing debt level prior to 2 years ago?
These guys been in power for almost a decade…don't give them a free pass for 7 of those because of Covid handouts.

        • +2

You seem to be of the opinion that I give a shit about the liberal party. I think they are scum, like the rest. The inflation at the moment is due in part to the ridiculous amount of money that was handed out to people who didn't need it, and who shouldn't have been eligible to receive it.

  • I'm going to put my $250, and any other bonus, into buying things in the supermarket that haven't gone up in price over the last couple of years and that also have a very long shelf life. Things I always use, such as vanilla essence (4 year shelf life). I assume prices will rise substantially, while putting the money into my mortgage will only deliver a 2% return during the next year.

  • +1

    put in VAS

  • +4

My vote is worth more than $250, I'll take your money Scummo and vote you out.

  • +4

Why is OP asking here? Everyone OzB is on $250k at least 1 person in the relationship (the other half is on at least $100k) and you know a $3k subsidy on a $60k Tesla is a deal.

$250 once off payment is a bribe because the current government (regardless of payment) is pretty mean to them and hopefully their memory can be wiped with $250.

    • Tesla
nah we all own a high yield merc amg

    • I think OP is trying to spread the word in hopes that a few more people vote for LNP…

  • +3

Shall buy one months of my medications with it, sadly that's all $250 gets.

    • Wow, I had no idea meds could cost that much. Mine are a lowly $14 so far. Mum's meds are going to be high, we don't have the bill yet..

  • +1

it's still in my bank account just sitting there

  • Full tank of 98 RON cause I want to be a baller.
Whatever is left will be impulse buy on whatever is on sale.

  • +3

Pfft $250 and I'm not even eligible. Bring back Kevin 07 so I can buy a new $2000 TV.

    • -1

Around that time baby bonus was $5,000. A lot of flat screen TV’s were purchased then.

  • +6

    hookers and blow of course

    Deals $250 and under

  • -4

If you are not a student, $250 should be nothing to even worry about let alone see it as some sort of life changing miracle.
If you do not have $250 in your bank, as savings, then something is wrong with the way you conduct your living.
Stop smoking. Stop alcohol. Stop expensive meat.

    • Perhaps it has something to do with the jobseeker payments being below the poverty line.

Have you ever lived on $230 per week to cover food, shelter and clothing?

  • I got it somehow even though having part time job for a year. I think maybe due to my healthcare card only expiring 6/4/22, so maybe the cut off was April?

Anyway, I felt less guilty about buying a carton of beer I was going to buy anyway, and that's it :)

  • KFC

  • I didn't get any cost of living payment……

  • +2

I'm considering donating half of it to the Labor party's election slush fund, hopefully it'll help us get a better government.

  • Maybe some milk and a couple of loaves of bread.

  • +1

Donation to the ALP. Jokes, Im not actually getting anything. Not that $250 would get you very far in this day and age

  • Cheaper chinese goods

  • +3

    Rents rise 20%
    Food prices rise 15%

    Government:
    "Here, have a gift card."

It's called cost of living payment but could barely buy a family groceries for a week. What a joke.

    • +1

The joke is that the feds are handing out "free" 💵.

  • I put it towards a new coffee machine since my last one carked it recently. Got a Gaggia Classic Pro :)

  • +2

These stupid payments are beyond ridiculous. Government needs to do their flippin' job and stop trying to buy people's love. The libs favourite cheerleader Scomo can't convince people to vote for them so they are literally just trying to buy the election.

  • Saturday Lotto superdraw 20 mil

  • +1

    ah,

    handouts.

    strayamaaaate.

  • +3

Firstly, most of our not elligible. Then this will only add to inflation if people spend. This is just vote buying.
All effort should have been to bring down inflation without much need from RBA to increase rate.

  • +2

Drink, drugs, woman and waste anything left.

  • +2

IF i got the $250 then I'd put it towards getting a growing cyst removed from my body (non cancerous btw). But since I Wont get the $250 and my health insurance excess is higher than that, I'll just continue on the public list for who knows how long. My sibling will spend it on some scams, takeaway and maybe a lil substance. But hey, Australias a fair country and the government is supporting all of us. /s alas I've become a bit bitter me thinks :)

    • Did you not get the up to $1000 tax cut last year?

  • +1

Nothing. I'm in the punish for working hard bracket.

    • This government never helped people who in the upper brackets and instead gave the money to dole bludgers while we pay all the tax.

I would of rather they gave it to us because we know how to invest in things like improving our homes (which helps the economy) and don't waste it on BS junk like plasma TVs or track pants.

      • +1

and don't waste it on BS junk like plasma TVs or track pants.

        I don't buy pants either.

  • +1

Didn't get it. ScoMo thinks I'm too rich.

    • Yep, the liberal govnement has a history of punishing people who work hard and earn more. They never give us anything back.

      • +1

Yea, doesn't sound like the liberal party I know. They like people who work hard, get ahead, climb the ladder then pull the ladder up behind them so other's can't climb up as well.

  • +4

Its hilarious that ScoMo thinks an once off payment of $250 is enough to offset the effects of inflation haha. lmao

  • +1
    • We all prefer bin chickens… they make me smile

  • more games I will never play.. lol sike im not on centrelink any more lol poor plebs

  • +3

A lunch with my family on 21 May, right after we have voted for Labor.
    Thanks Scomo!

  • +2

Houses went up by $200,000 last year and the government thinks a picayune once off $250 payment is enough to bride me into voting for them. Even $250 per week woldn't be anywhere near enough to offset housing inflation.

If you wanted to help the poor, start by slapping a price cap/freeze on housing for the next 10 years.

    • Housing isn't tied to inflation alone.

$250 payment isn't meant for people who are ready to buy a house.

  • -1

$250 is a life changing amount. I'll probably put some towards a new house, a new holiday - would love to spend a month in Europe, and maybe if any left over I can put it towards a new car.

    • After your holiday, invest the residual in VAS as others have said and in less than 2 years you’ll have another $250 to repeat the cycle. Buy a car on the 5th repetition and get a 2015 hover model, but much cheaper.

  • +1

Those who need this payment deserve more, those who don't need it need to realise how good they have it.

Filthy attempt by the Liberals to buy votes if you ask me, disgusting.

  • I’m going to try a very specific strategy to turn $250 into $1 mill in hopefully less than 10 years. Hope I didn’t overfit it too much with this strat

  • buy some twitter

  • It's absolutely ridiculous. In a couple of years time everyone earning 200k and above will get an extra 9k per year in their take home pay indefinitely due to their generous tax cuts.

Meanwhile everyone else had to be content with a measly one off payment of $250 lol

  • +1

I'd prefer them to keep and it invest it into hospitals or roads. But please no sports grants or carparks.
