Sounds like some good deals for anyone that doesn't want to "hold a hose".

  • But then you have to fly with Qantas

    • +3

      You can fly Hawaiian instead!

  • +1

I haven't flown anywhere in ages…. So I could well be wrong here. But $794 seems like the normal price I'd expect to pay with Qantas?

    • +3

Pre-Covid probably cheaper - around $750 ish. But now things are different

    • Yeah, what i done did thunk also.

  • +1

Come on, Hawaiian - resume Brisbane direct flights! I don't want to go via Sydney! Boo!

    • +2

If you are in Brisbane why would you want to fly out to anywhere🤣

  • +5

Cheap flights, but everything in Hawaii is massively expensive. Not like the mainland USA at all.

Great destination, but dont think its a cheap getaway!

    • +14

Less chance of getting shot though

    • +1

So true. I just got back from Honolulu this week.

It's worth the money because it's an amazing destination, but definitely not cheap.

      • +2

Interesting - did you go elsewhere in Hawaii other than Honolulu? We found it like a gold coast on steroids and wouldnt go back.

Big island though - one of the best places I've been!

        • agree on that assessment of Honolulu (exactly what I said), but found the Big Island a bit stark and boring. Much preferred Maui. Wish I'd done some of the smaller islands

    • +2

Yes it only our dollar was higher against the US dollar then it would be more affordable

I don’t like the hidden taxes and tipping lol ther can add like an extra 20% to everything on your trip

    • +1, currently in Maui and it is ridiculously expensive here. Seems to be much more so than when I was here 5 years ago.

  • +3

FYI I was planning on doing Hawaii for our honeymoon, accommodation is really expensive. Just check where you're going to stay before you book flights. What you save on flights you'll pay in your hotel.

    • +1

Agree with this. Did the same, but did the 7 day cruise around the islands to try to cut down on accommodation costs (and avoid inter-island flights!).

Not sure about doing a cruise, in the USA, during COVID though. Very very high risk.

      • Where did you book the 7 day cruise from and what was the cost? Thanks

    • AirBNB

      • +1

I am booking accom for an October holiday, and AirBnB is super expensive for anything more than a "condo". If you want a nice house in a good location with a pool, expect to pay +$2k per night.

        • I haven't been back for a few years, but I always got penthouse apartments for around $200-$300 a night in decent locations (within 3 blocks to the main beaches)

          • +1

@Danstar: I have no doubt that pre-covid you could get good deals, but Hawaii is just WAY more expensive now. I have been a regular Bali goer for many years, and for $1k per night you can get just incredible, world class houses on AirBnB (eg 5 bedroom Sharma Springs in Ubud, google it).

But for my trip to Hawaii in October 2022 for the same money I can only get a 2-3 bedroom 20 year old shack in the burbs "near" the beach (2 blocks back) with no pool. Its a big surprise when I booked a 3 week holiday with cheap flights for the family and now find that $20 grand for accom is only getting me OK places, and it looking more like $30k if I want to stay somewhere really nice.

            • @dtpearson: Completely agree. We had Hawaii flights booked and couldn’t believe how expensive everything got. Changed the flights to Bali. Saved plenty and got to stay in some really nice places.

              • @julesytime: What airline did you book that allowed you to change destinations/dates?

                • @dimple: Jetstar. They tried to force me to pay nearly $1500 in change fees, but apparently when I said the magic words of “not being able to go” the cancelled the flights and issued me a full refund on travel credit.

        • Not sure why you've being downvoted, but I found the same when looking at Dec. AirBNB pricing was pretty much in line with hotels and there were some pretty extreme asking prices to rent a standalone home. Even for condos you'd be better off booking direct as there can be significant savings.

      • If you're going with a group of people, then splitting the cost makes it worth it. Otheriwse, it's virtually same price as a hotel if you're looking for a nice AirBnB. The only thing you would save on are the ressort fee and tips, but you lose out on amenities, breakfast, shuttle, location, service, etc.

    • When I went, I got an air bnb. Sooo much cheaper! And was 2 streets from the main strip

    • Can back this up! Got a family reunion in Hawaii mid December and the asking rates for accommodation on Maui gave me a shock! I get that it's peak Xmas season, but >AU$350/night for 3 star hotels feels bad when I think about the types of hotels in other cities I could be staying at for that price…

Better to do like Thailand etc…cheaper you get more for your buck and be treated like royalty

Any dates for after the federal election? Asking for a friend that likes to go to Hawaii and may have a lot of new found spare time.

    • +2

why don't you get your friend to do a search of the dates? lol

      • +12

        Woosh?

      • -2

His friend is not that smart…. he will have to ask Jenny

    • -1

But Victoria is not until November!

  • I'll meet you there Scotty.

  • +2

Like others - don't buy the air ticket then accom. Find the accom first then air tickets to match.

My wife did that a year before covid and it was really expensive to find accommodation and we ended up just having to pay a fair bit on accommodation that fitted the flights.

  • Anything for 2023?

    • Yes. There are some dates in January. 2023. (After the 12th)

  • Don’t forget you need to be vaccinated

    • +1

That is looking to be the case for most countries now. I am going to Switzerland, Iceland and Singapore, and it looks like all of them now have dropped the requirement to have a covid test but you do have to prove you are fully vaccinated to enter the country.

    • To those negging this, yes I understand the frustration of this comment, yes it’s a breach of human rights and international Law. However they will lock you up if you don’t comply. Breaching every single human right I can think about.

  • Any deals to connect on to the mainland US? I'll be connecting on down to South America though because of the high cost of flights would consider a Hawaiian stopover.

    • Maybe best look at Southwest, Jetblue or Alaska Airlines to get over there?
