Advice Sought - Sony Online Store Trade-in Prices

My Sony Bravia KDL65W850C 65" LCD TV recently stopped working. I bought it in 2016 and used it nearly every day until it refused to turn on and just started flashing a red light six times. Googling has told me this is probably the circuit board being fried, which is odd since it seems to happen in humid areas - I've been using it in a cool, dry inland suburban house under optimal conditions. Anyone else had the same experience?

Despite this being a 'known issue' online, Sony wouldn't replace it under warranty (fair enough I suppose) and only offered the below trade-in discounts on their online store for a replacement model. Can anyone advise on whether these are decent prices at the moment, and which models are the best bang for buck? Deals on comparable models are also welcome - minimum 65" though. Also thinking about a short throw laser projector.

We highly value your interest in purchasing new Sony TV.
We would like to offer you the following models at their best price:

KD65X80J $1,259.40 AUD

Based on this deal the XR65X90J is a fairly good price, but has been at 1500 before. You could try and push them for $1500. They definitely haven't offered you their best pricing, but not a bad price all the same.

  • XR65A90J $3,299.00
    XR65A90J $3,299.00

I'm finding it hard to choose between the last 2…

      I recommend XR65A90J $3,299.00

      • Thanks…

I'd hate to buy the wrong one…

  • Not bad prices, you're basically getting 65" for 55" retail prices. Just depends on what TV features are important to you like VRR, HDR level, framerate etc. You probably want either X85J or X90J realistically.

    • Thanks. Retail prices don't cut it though, do they!

I don't really know what specs to look for though I know what looks good. Just seems to be a bad time for TV deals atm…

$0 if you have the time to go without a TV and you want to fight it

A TV failing within 6 years is within your ACCC rights to replaced. If not I'd go with the X90J

    • That's what I would have thought. Any advice?

Threaten to make a complaint to the accc to sony, if they dont budge then you have to actually go through the complaints process.

    • A TV failing within 6 years is within your ACCC rights to replaced.

Where does it state that TVs should last for more than 6 years?

      • In the OzB charter..

It says that it should last a reasonable period. There's clear precedent if you look around, I recall a similar case where they determined that 8 years was acceptable for a $2000 TV and it was replaced

It says that it should last a reasonable period.

I think 5 years is reasonable.

  • How did u go @Meconium ? I am in similar situation and would love to know what would be the fair price. I have been offered:
    KD65X75K @ $ 839.58
    KD75X80K @ $1385.58
    KD75X85J @ $1175.58

    however I am interested in
    XR65X90J $1,799.40
    XR65X95J $2,279.40

  • Finally got XR65X90K for 800$. Here is the email in case it helps anyone:

    Hi,

    Thank you for your email.

As I mentioned earlier, I should get a free replacement of the comparable model.

    I can see price of KD65X75K at 1695$ :

    https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/televisions/x75k-series/…

However I am inclined towards x90k series as x75k series has got bad reviews and I believe it will not be same experience if not better as my existing faulty TV.

    Price for XR65X90K is 2495$
    I
    https://store.sony.com.au/television-4K-X9000/XR65X90K.html#…

So the difference of price between XR65X90K and KD65X75K is 800$.

I am happy to pay 800$ for XR65X90K including delivery and setup and pickup of faulty tv. If not, I would request for a complete refund so that I can go to market and have freedom to chose any other option.

Please feel free call me on XXXX in case of any questions.

Hoping to hear from you soon.

    Thank you for your help.

    Regards,
