All looks good except the part you look at

  • Great CPU and GPU, would be nice if that ram is 1x 8GB instead of 2x4GB.

  • I wouldn’t call this an amazing deal, less than 16gb of ram in a computer even a laptop in this day and age is kind of cringe not mention it is 4gb modules. The cpu is good, the graphics card is alright for non fps games, you would struggle in most games to reach 144fps without heavily compromising on quality. Ssd again is small, 512 is the minimum if you want to play games. Overall not a gaming laptop, this is a laptop for people who need a general use laptop, no heavy workloads that kind of stuff.

  • +1

everytime theres a laptop deal posted there has to be some sort of bs posted about how crap it is.

    • +22

I think if the criticism is fair and helps people make a good decision on purchasing a product, it is a good thing. I think though those complaining should take into consideration the price, a budget gaming laptop won't compete with higher end gaming laptops.

Gaming posts in general seem to bring out the worst people here I think, which says a lot about gamers. When a gaming console is posted, a fanboy of another console chimes in crapping on it and then a PC gamer makes a shitty comment too.

      • +6

People make the most E waste by getting underspecced junk for their use cases. The least we can do is point out this thing might not be as good as it looks.

The people that should buy this will instead buy the basement bin $600 laptops and complain it sucks.

      • +2

Lots of people are just saying "oh it's crap", whereas it's more constructive to say what it's use case is.

This one for example is just not a high fps AAA gaming machine. It's also sub $1k! If you and your mates typically play older games, then this is probably a pretty good option.

    • -8

Most of them are crap, my 11 year old laptop has better specs than half these deals 🤣

      • What is your 11 year old laptop?

        • -2

          My 11 year old laptop is a p150em, it's ok with a i7 3840qm, gtx680, 32gb ram, 2x SSD.

This one would out perform it in probably everything and I think my old laptop had pretty good specs for the time. The old girl is still kicking strong.

I think it's a pretty good deal, you can upgrade the ram later if you need to.

          • +3

@Joxer: She's a strong girl but not gonna lie nearly all of these sub $1k deals would beat it in everything other than your ram capacity as long as it has a dedicated GPU.

          • @Joxer: Your laptop would have been a beast at release. My current laptop wasn't a beast at release 5+ years ago but has a great keyboard, strong build construction, with a nice screen, when I upgrade I want one with a decent screen again, but they seem to be attached to expensive systems… Going to have to pony up I guess.

          • @Joxer: Samsung Ultrabook
Excluding GPU, it was an i7 and has 8GB ram.

My point was, half these laptops have very low specs.

Standard should be 16GB ran these days.

    • -7

Well quite frankly the deal is crap. Who on earth puts 4gb modules of ram into a laptop, for the user to upgrade to 16gb of ram they would need to replace both 4gb modules with 8gb modules, if it had 1 8gb module it would have a better upgradability path, the graphics are amd this is bad for the reason that there is no DLSS which is vital for low end gpu’s. the monitor is average, the battery is decent, the ssd is shit, the cpu is good, the build quality is not good. Also it is a hp computer, hp are one of the worst brands, usually in a hp system you pay for the brand not the specs.

      • +2

Do you have a sub $1k laptop with a similar CPU and high Hz monitor, with 16gb of ram, a good ssd, and great build quality?

    • +2

There always has to be a trade off somewhere with gaming laptops and, especially for someone like me who's not as tech savvy as some ozbargainers, pointing out those weaknesses is really important as long as it's not 'yo this sucks lmao, lrn2google'. So I def agree with you if that's the case.

On the flipside, helpful criticism like 'Good specs for the price but that RAM, which is going to hold it back comparatively, is soldered to the board which you should consider when purchasing ra ra ra' is so appreciated, especially if you are like me and still very much learning about PC builds/hardware and their nuances. One piece of advice won't usually alter my view immediately, but it provides better direction for making an informed decision rather than an regretful, impulsive purchase….most of the time…

  • +3

250 nits display looks extremely dim. Otherwise, specs are good.

  • +5

Biggest issue is not the screen, it's the seller.

    • Why is that ?

      • +5

Oh you must be new. That's cute

      • +2

Harvey Norman is on the nose due to their refusal to pay back $22m in 'jobkeeper' (Covid stimulus packages for businesses in Aus) after making record profits in the year following. Making huge profits off the back of taxpayer funded stimulus and then flatly refusing to give any back was viewed as pure corporatist greed.

HN have engaged in some pretty scummy practises over the years which have not endeared them to consumers as well, and the face of HN, Gerry Harvey, said some typical 'wealthy person with no idea how the rest of the world lives' tripe during the pandemic.

At shops level, HN are a mixed bag. Consumer insurance is pushed when not necessary, predatory interest free deals, poorly explained bundled deals with other companies, some stuff is straight-up horrendous quality (furniture/rugs) etc, disguised shipping costs, 'creating scarcity' issues where none exists etc. On the other hand there are some crazy good deals, interesting products, well appointed stores that are actually easy to walk around in (looking at you jb hifi…), and some sales staff are really knowledgeable, surprisingly passionate and don't make shopping for large ticket items unpleasant, returns are very simple and streamlined etc.

  • +13

    Lets break it down
    1. 250nit max brightness screen
    2. 144hz refresh rate panel with a GPU that wont be able to hit that FPS unless playing CSGO or demanding titles on low settings
3 256GB of storage will run out very quickly but thankfully its up-gradable
    4. 2 x 4GB memory modules for a total of 8GB is simply not enough, 16GB should be the bare minimum and having two 4GB modules make quick after purchase upgrades annoying as you will need to upgrade both modules
    5. HP (HP laptops are notorious for having bad build quality and terrible thermals)
    6. The seller

    • +2

Actually the laptop will be easily able to over 144hz on cs go 1080p high /ultra.

    • 1650 hits 300fps easily in HL2, should be able in csgo and older titles no problem

    • +3

I think you sorted it wrong @clokeyyy. It should be like this:

      1. The seller
  • +1

can pair with discount gift cards for even cheaper price.
Specs look ok, people in reviews mention build quality is a bit iffy and the 4gb of vram isnt great these days

  • +1

    weak screen
    victus build is so-so
    performance around 1660Ti not bad
    small SSD
keyboard is OK nothing special though
RAM is dual channel at least, 8gb isn't much though, so you will want to factor in 2x 8gb planks (about $100 for 2) purchase

overall if you're looking for budget gaming, not bad. but be aware of limitations. par for the course at this price

  • +3

Previous Acer with rtx 3060 8gb vram is a much better deal.

    • +4

The only things good about that deal was the 3060, and it's no longer available.

  • +4

If you value the HN GC at face value and you need to buy a budget gaming laptop right now, you could do a lot worse than this. A budget screen, 8GB of RAM, 256GB is not some sort of dealbreaker on a $1000 gaming laptop, it's what you'd expect for the price and is very common with budget competitors (Dell G15, Acer Nitro 5, etc). A 5500M is worse than a 3050 in rasterisation and upscaling however we haven't seen the Dell G15 5600H / 3050 at $899 since last July which is similar in price to performance.

If you don't need a gaming laptop now, you're better off waiting a couple of months for EOFY sales which will very likely have better deals than right now.

I love how everyone is losing their mind about this laptop, yet actually awful deals like the ALDI home brand 5600H / 3050ti gaming laptop got 100+ upvotes before at $1299. Everyone who upvoted that post should have been executed by firing squad when at the time the Nitro 5 3060 was on clearance for $200 less.

    • +1

Was going to post something similar. Great laptop for the price. Anything under 1200$ of similar specs going to have a sh1t screen. I almost pulled the trigger on the dell then realised build quality, size was massive and bad screen. I'm pretty sure this hp is better

    • +1

Most definitely, people are just braindead to real bargains, the firing squad is almost too good for the idiots.

  • -3

I sure hope the person who buys this laptop has no intention of using it for gaming. GPU sux with only 4gb vram.

save yourself from desk banging and get a different laptop.

    • +1

I posted a review in my OP of this laptop

      https://youtu.be/fbuA0TwnnBM

Reviewer states 215fps on CSGO 1080p medium

      71 fps Farcry 5 1080p high

Please provide links to backup your arguments for this sub 1k laptop and provide an alternative in this price point.

      • I'd provide proof but your mind is already made up that you are right and I'd just be wasting my time.

Just remember even AMD said 4gb vram is not enough for modern gaming and then took down the articles when then decided to release the RX 5500 with 4gb vram.

        • Looking at my gaming history recently, it's valheim, sc2, factorio, war3r, subnautica, stranded deep, anno 1800, and civ6.

Pretty much all of those would get fairly high fps with this gpu. Is it "modern gaming"? define modern…but that doesn't matter to me. These are the games I play.

I'm sure there are AAA gamers that need a $2k laptop. But I don't really earn a pile, and I'm happy to find a device that suits my needs for $1k.

          • @incipient: You'd have to ask AMD what they define as modern gaming.

But I do know my son regularly runs over 4gb vram when gaming at 1080p with not many mods applied to the game. I've recorded vram usage of 5-6gb vram at times.

Above said vram usage on a GPU with only 4gb could cause dramatic fps drops and possible stuttering.

            • +1

              @Jagd: I'm playing on a 970 with 3.5gb/4gb of vram lol.

Game engines will change what they store in memory based on what's available. This will of course impact performance, but 4gb definitely enough for the games I listed above. Some quite old, some less so.

  • Jbhi has this model that’s on sale today which looks a better buy but expires today

    • +1

No dedicated GPU in that option - so from a gaming perspective its not comparable.

    • +1

Not comparable. Slower quad-core Intel CPU, no dGPU and it's not a gaming laptop.

  • This or Gerry's favourite oollleee?

  • +1

Wonder will Elden Ring be playable on this laptop?

  • Not bad, but it's HP so I personally would stay away from it.

You could spend 300 for 32gb of ram and more 300 for a 2tb SSD and get a pretty decent machine. I'm not into big/bulky laptops these days, but a 16" weighting less than 2.5kg is quite good.
