    can make different rice? like coconut flavours jasmine rice, biryani etc etc

      think this is just a normal rice cooker, where you can leave the rice inside for a slightly longer period of time and keeping it warm w/o burning. Not sure if instant pot does it like that too?

      the different rice types you mentioned, i can make them even with the decor microwaveable rice cooker containers… it's just about getting the water:rice:ingredients correct. the cooking method doesnt quite matter in that sense, you can use stove, pressure cooker, microwavable containers, rice cookers, oven..etc

        • ah, then its probably a redundant appliance, unless your household eats a lot of rice and you need to repurpose the IP for dishes. one of my pet annoyance is having flavours of the pot (in my case is claypots) transferring to the rice. So I have a dedicated rice cooker, and i use my philips pressure cooker for stews.

              @DrScavenger: context matters, i was replying to kehuehue since their instant pot does rice cooking, there's no point having another rice cooker if they don't have it on a regular basis to justify an instant pot plus another rice cooker.

    • If you enjoy rice regularly, getting a decent rice cooker with IH is a go, imho. Otherwise, instant pot would do.

          What is an IH (Induction Heating) rice/pressure cooker? How are they different to conventional pressure rice cookers?

          IH rice/pressure cookers are also classified as pressure cookers. All pressure cookers basically build pressure inside the pot to cook food. This process enables the rice cooker to reach a higher boiling point than when it is at a standard pressure (1 atm/105 Pa->100 degrees celsius). Pressure cookers can reach 120 to 150 degrees celsius. IH rice/pressure cookers build more pressure, and thus have higher boiling point than a conventional pressure rice cooker. IH pressure cookers use induction heating technology (induction coils build electromagnetic induction to heat up the whole stainless steel inner pot), whereas conventional pressure cookers use a heating pan to heat up the inner pot.

    We got one of these in a previous deal and it's great. Felt silly getting something to cook rice since its not exactly hard, but no its actually a huge improvement to cooking, because you don't have to worry about timing it, just use the keep warm.

      if your meals consists of lots of rice, having a good rice cooker does gives you a consistency and convenience over most of other methods imo.

      Every restaurant that serves rice uses a rice cooker, which should give you an indication of how much better than stovetop it is… I've been meaning to get one myself and might pull the trigger on this one.

      Half Filo here and I have never known life without a rice cooker, in fact it was one of the first appliances I bought when I moved out of home.

      For the amount of rice I eat (1-2 times a week), I have only just come to realise that I have never cooked rice on a stove before haha. Always been in a rice cooker.

    If only there was someone who has used both this and Tiger/Cuckoo/Zojirushi who could provide some insight on whether to go for this or wait and suffer with my Kmart rice cooker till a good deal on one of the Japanese ones comes along…

      i have the costco tiger one, i started out with a kmart/bigw rice cooker over a decade ago.

      i can safely say you generally get what you pay for. the tiger one that i have uses induction, so it doesn't have a heating coil (which i dislike, thus i went for the induction one).

      the brands you listed are probably a different class over kmart/krambrook/etc ones, once you are in that price range, it's just more of bells and whistles.

      as of my earlier post, i also use the decor microwavable rice cooker as well. different needs :)

      but i'm loving my tiger rice cooker, does brown/red/black rice really well. the price for it, not so much.

      • Tiger is overpriced my one lasted only two years. Stopped working the LCD display. Store won't give warranty. I threw it in the bin never again. It's not the battery neither.

        Panasonic one been fine over several years

        • ymmv. the tiger one is 2+ yrs old now i think. got it before covid19, and it has seen plenty of use because of cooking every meal at home. for costco, the warranty is lifetime of membership and no questions asked, so i am not too worried about warranty.

      Had this Panasonic cooker for 12 years. Worked well but doesn't keep the rice warm for more than about 8 - 10 hours before rice starts to go hard. Bought a top of the range Tiger a few months ago. IH pressure version and it is awesome. We can taste the difference and the features are great. Cost 4x the price though! If you eat a lot of rice these are great. We eat about 15kg or more a month so for us a good cooker is important.

          Yep. Most likely ours was just very well used. This is a good cooker if you like consistent rice but don't want to pay for the fancy features. The IH one is worth it if you eat a lot of rice though. Scrape the left over rice into the centre of the bowl too and it will help the rice to stay fresher on the keep warm setting.

    • I had this rice cooker and just replaced it with this cuckoo option from costco.
      The panasonic was around 5 years old and was starting to get crunchy/burning on the bottom for a while now.
      The cuckoo is slightly better build quality, particularly the bowl is much heavier and feels more solid, overall very similar but feels like a slight upgrade.

      Go for this. I owned a mid-range National in Japan, and have a Tiger now. Tiger, Panasonic and Zojirushi are the three best brands in my opinion, and Cuckoo is probably the next tier down but still very good (or maybe I'm just a biased weeb). Having said that I'd buy this at Costco instead of through Amazon because Costco's returns policy is the best in the land.

        kmart/target/big w ones will do the job, but they never lasted long for us and once the non-stick coating started flaking away, that was the end of it. makes more economic sense to buy something good quality that will last; also better for the environment.

  • Anyone know where to get the inner lid replacement that doesn't cost almost the same as a new cooker?

    • Just realised I posted nearly same question below(I need a inner pot replacement). It is really a pain to get genuine replacement parts.

    • mostly out of luck there, I wanted to get a 'spare' pot for mine so that I can rotate them (1 to soak before washing and the other to cook straight away), the price is really high too.

      i think it mostly has to do with people using these appliances "forever" , so they rarely come up with replacement parts… and the models over the years supersede the older ones.

      try the manufacturer sites, for my one (tiger), i was able to navigate to some place I possibly could get it shipped from singapore or japan. i gave up became too hard to justify the postage.

  • I only cook 1 cup a night. Is this for me.

    • No. There is a 5 cup model.

    • Its convenience of having perfect rice ready when the toppings are ready. Start by putting the rice on and it's no brainer that when toppings are done, it's dinner time. Also stops my kids from destroying yet another pot with boiling dry while distracted gaming.

    • it would be better to get the smaller model as it takes up less space on the counter top and less of a pain to wash as well.
      there is such a thing as a 3 cup rice cooker in those 3 'good' brands mentioned. you just have to look for it.

      You need the 5 cup version. The 10 cup version has a minimum of 2 cup (from reading reviews).

      I'm also waiting for the 5 cup to drop in price. Amazon cancelled my order last time :(

        can get the 5 cup from MYDEAL for under $115 + $10 postage, or free postage if new customer with code, or 10% cashback if new customer and never been on their database through Shopback. I just missed the 15% cashback deal through cashrewards ANZ Max yesterday. Damn.

      • i’m waiting for the 5 cup, have the 10 cup already , sometimes i just want small quantities of specialize rice e.g mexican rice ,
        plain or saffron rice i do in qty in the 10 cup.

      i cook rice in batches ……put in the fridge and reheat in microwave is subsequent days …… trick is to crumble the rice the next day to keep it fluffy ….. 1 minute in microwave and you have hot rice …. so 10 cup is a bit large if you just cook 1 cup, but not if you do batches …..you can also freeze rice …..they actually sell frozen rice in supermarkets for people in a hurry ……. i buy take away curries but never take away rice ……. quick meal and don’t need to wait 20 mins for rice ..

        but here's my thoughts
        1) believe it or not, frozen rice is expensive $/cup
        2) people might not want to store rice due to heath reasons, so only cook what they need.
        3) storing rice overnight in the fridge is valid though, that's how one makes good fried rice
        4) i personally feel that freezing rice is just taking up precious space, 17 mins for a 2.5cup of rice in the microwave or 17mins for a 10 cup of rice in my tiger rice cooker, it doesn't matter. i can food prep other things as i wait. it's not that bad.

  • Currently own a Panasonic sr zx105. Decent appliance still going strong after 5 yrs. Only issue is the inner pot start to see scratches and can see several coating about to fall off. Checked for genuine replacement online and was way too expensive at $190+ Anyone has experience looking for general replacement inner pot for rice cookers?

    • I've bought an inner pot replacement for Tiger from an appliances repair store in Cabramatta, Sydney before for about $80. They do have an ebay store also which is where I purchased from but did click and collect (had an eBay discount code that made it cheaper than buying direct in store and didn't want to pay $15 postage). Find your rice cooker model number and type inner pot into ebay and see what comes out.

    I bought this a few months ago and its been great!
    I guess what sweetened the deal however was when they shipped it, the boxes come shrinked 2 together.. which i dont think amazon noticed so i actually got two of these for the price of one lol.
    wishing anyone else luck for a similar error.

    A little off topic, but can anyone recommend a rice cooker with a stainless steel pot? Not a fan on non-stick.

      yeah we went through our fair share of crappy, cheap rice cookers.

      eventually, my mother had to buy a Khind cooker in Malaysia and brought it back here. model name is AnShin Buffalo.

    • insta pot …..that’s what sets it apart from many other cookers is the stainless steel pot, and you can buy extra insert pots from corelle …..and a non stick if inclined , think the 3 litre was $21 …..

      • We have a Breville Fast Slow Go, but my wife doesn't like the idea of using it to cool rice, not sure why. Could be because it usually has something else in it and she wants to cook rice at the same time.

    have been using it for a few months and loving it.

    1 can of light coconut cream and with 2 cups of jasmine rice on quick function gets you fluffy coconut rice. I also make claypot rice and congee aswell which always turns out amazing.

    great rice cooker.
