Apple Ready to Move to USB-C

Hi all,

It seems that Apple is ready to move to USB-C. I think that was about time. https://www.macrumors.com/2022/05/11/iphone-15-ditch-lightni…

From the article:

Kuo had previously said that Apple would be sticking with Lightning on the ‌iPhone‌ for the "foreseeable future," saying that switching to USB-C would be harmful to Apple's MiFi business and has lesser waterproof specification. Now, Apple has reportedly changed its tone. One possible reason for Apple's change in heart is pressure being placed upon it by the EU.

Most of Apple's iPad lineup already features USB-C for faster transfer speeds from accessories such as cameras. For photographers and cinematographers, a demographic Apple has been keen to target with its high-end iPhones, the Lightning port represents a bottleneck for transferring large video and photo files. A move to USB-C would ease that workflow, make it easier to transfer files and be supported by a broader ecosystem of USB-C accessories.

That's about iPhone 15. So really it is too early to say for sure.

    • Yeah being reported by 9 to 5 Mac as for iPhone 15

really? they are ready to lose billion of $ from ripping of humanity (Selling lightning stuffs?

When apple introduced the lighting connector the mobile phone industry was using all sorts of proprietary connectors, and even early USB connectors kept changing from mini to micro to nano and finally to USB C. Apple's original 30-pin connector was used from 2003 until 2014, that's 11 years straight. And the lightning connector will have been used from 2012 until maybe next year, which again is 11 years straight. The lightning connector was very advanced for the time, it was reversible and rugged long before USB C. Apple didn't need to switch to USB C sooner to have a universal standard, they already had one with lightning. Every iPhone for the last 10 years has used the same charging cable. And every iPod and iPhone for the 11 years before that used the same cable.

There's been talks that Apple won't even migrate to USB-C on iPhone - they'll continue with Lightning until they're ready to go to completely port-less.

      • +1

Yes, but the rest of the world uses USB-C? AS does the Macbook Pro I'm typing this on, as well as the
Logitech Keyboard, not too mention high end IpadPro's.

But how will they add the Apple tax?!?
I know, it will be a USB-C connector, but be a 7.126V spec instead of 5V - can't say they didn't adopt the connector that way and can still have the Apple tax :P

    • So it would be another implementation of the fragmented USB-C standard to add to the pile

    but i prefer lighting cable

    • +4

      Not a sounding cable?

  • Lightning has been around way longer than usbc, and has outlasted several generations of usb connectors. Why should apple adopt another connector standard which will probably just change in a few years anyway? And lightning is more waterproof as well. Apple is all about engineering the best product - it’s a shame to see regulation stifling innovation. Dumb stuff. EU is moronic.

      lol

      • Well you can't argue with a response like that.

    • +3

      USB-C is here to stay.

Lightning was introduced in 2012, USB-C in 2014. So no, Lightning hasn't outlasted a single generation of USB.

The stuff about waterproofing is just nonsense. Only Mac fanboi sites state this; IPX8-rated USB-C ports are manufactured. Waterproofing is inherent to manufacture, not the port itself.

You do understand the reason the EU directive exists, right?

      • +1

So no USB-D? As long as they don't change the connector shape… I also look forward to the EU forcing standardisation of all USB-C implementations.

Lightning was first used in the iPhone 5/iPods/iPads in 2012, but USB C didn't come onto an Android phone until 2015 on some Letv branded phones from the looks of it.

        • +2

3 years isn't "several generations of usb connectors" though is it?

          • @picklewizard: 2015 is when the very first Android had USB C, a Chinese brand named Letv. It took more years for USB C to become close to being a standard, and even today some Androids use micro USB still.

            • +1

@AustriaBargain: Still not "generations" now though is it?

              • @picklewizard: Between 2012 and now Android phones have used different generations of the USB connector, including mini, micro, C, etc., as well as a variety of proprietary connectors like Samsung's own 30-pin connector.

                • +1

@AustriaBargain: No, the standard went from Micro USB to USB-C.

Lightning wasn't introduced at the same time as Micro USB (which was introduced several years earlier - 2007 in fact, back when iPhone was released and used the god-awful bulky 30-pin connector), thus your comparison is invalid.

                  • @picklewizard: I never said Lightning was introduced at the same time Micro USB was invented. And if you want to compare 2007 when the iPhone was released then forget Micro USB, non iPhones back then were using yet another form of USB, mini USB, or more commonly at the time they were using proprietary connectors that only worked with that specific model of phone. If you're not old enough to remember what it was like back then, just look in your parents junk drawer for some examples of proprietary chargers.

                    • @AustriaBargain: So you're saying proprietary connectors that only work with one type of phone are a bad thing…?

I'm glad we can finally agree on this point.

I think you just lost this one buddy, it's been fun though 😘

                      • +2

@picklewizard: Half of all phones sold in Australia are iPhones, a connector that works with half of all phones sold in the country in the last 10 years isn't really proprietary in the same way that a charger that only works with one specific model of the Sony Ericsson line of phones is. And if you look at the US the situation is even more different, 9 in 10 US young people use iPhone. For iPhones the connector is ubiquitous and has been interchangeable for a decade now. It's nothing like the situation where your drawer is full of proprietary connectors of old.

Yeah screw USB-C, lets still with USB 2.0 cables, with slow transfer speeds and lower power delivery. Lightning forever!

      • +1

How else will I have time to go make a coffee, fold laundry and learn a new language.

      • Lightning forever!

Yeah, those Apple cables last forever. /s

        • They do for people who know how to use a cable…

      • Transferring a 100GB file will take 30 mins at USB2.0 speeds and Apple has a 1TB iphone nowadays. That doesn't even included time stuffing around with itunes or whatever system they have now.

  • What will Apple fanbois put in their man bags if no need to carry dongles?

    • lmao what are iPhone users carrying dongles for? How often are you plugging yer phone into a PC (or Mac) to transfer data?

    • This guy is repressing something via projection.

  • HAHHAHA

This is same apple that introduced USB C to Macbook and hyped about it so much

Who hypes about environment friendliness, by cutting charging bricks from packaging, while having two different chargers for macbook range, and all other Apple products

  • Funny how Apple actually worked on USB-C initially.

  • Hopefully it will be thunderbolt like on the iPad Pro
