Can it be used to roast coffee beans?

    • Of course, I do. Looks exactly the same as kmarts $15 unit.

    • Technically yes, but only if you just want them to go from green to brown.

There's no real temperature control, no real way of making sure they roast evenly. If you're serious about getting the coffee you want (which I assume you would be, if you're roasting your own beans,) then you're probably better off with something else.

Got one similar ,more of a novelty and you will get tired of it soon after.

Just save your money and get microwavable popcorn on sale.

Much quieter, less messy and takes up less space.

Agreed. Although if I could find powdered cheese I'd do this instead.

Go on ebay, add it with flavacol and cook on stove with coconut oil. Thank me later.

      • Powdered "cheese" can be purchased from Coles under the name of Deliciou Vegan Cheese Flavoured Seasoning. Costs about $6. Incidentally ranch flavouring is also good on popcorn. Also good on chips. Bacon flavour is so-so.

Also I heartily recommend Nando's peri peri salt on popcorn if you've never tried it out.

    • i think its more useful for roasting other things

I’ve started making it on the stovetop since reading how the bags used for microwave popcorn contain PFCs. There’s quite a lot of woo-woo surrounding the subject, so you’re free to make your own mind up, but I have decided it’s probably in my own best interests to stop eating the stuff. I do have an air popper as well, but since making it on the stovetop I think it’s better and it doesn’t even seem to take much longer.

      • same, just use a saucepan with lid & little oil.

        Butter & salt when finished.

        • I add my salt in with the oil at the start and only a little at the end , coats the kernals this way with the flavour so not as much salt at the bottom of the bowl

        • heat gun from bunnings.

      • I agree with you. No more popcorn bags for me.
        So much cheaper too.

    • I used to be on a pack a day. I leaned myself off of the stuff though. Too many substances/chemicals that people say may or may not cause cancer.

Once I started to use an air popper, i never turned back

    • I got a different brand but I disagree, the microwave bags are massively high in calories covered in oil. With this you can air pop and get way healthier popcorn, I use it all the time. And it is way cheaper too.

    • You can cook ordinary popcorn kernels in the microwave, using a microwave-safe dish with a lid and some oil. You don’t need special popcorn

  • Is this better than Kmart?

Not sure how to compare a popcorn maker with a store

  • Anyone ever used the silicone microwave popper bowls? I'm in dire need of a good way to pop the corns. I (profanity) up every single attempt at stove top but i need to pop.

    • Yes I’ve used it,
      Works a treat.
No power plug and folds up compact.

See below for link Microwaveable Silicone Popcorn Popper, BPA Free Collapsible Hot Air Microwavable Popcorn Maker Bowl, Use In Microwave or Oven Orange https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07FDK8N8C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i…

      • I have one of these its quite flimsy and the lid does not fit on properly and could overflow.

I had a rectangular shaped one in the past and that was thick and sturdy and the lid fit on great, but can only find that version overseas. But i think someone threw out the lid of my old one so had to buy the flimsy one. it works

        https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/The-silicone-popcorn-…

        • From what I can see the lid doesn’t need to be on firmly.
If it’s overflowing it’s probably because there’s too much popcorn.

      • Awesome, thanks mate.

Stovetop. Oil. Butter salt and mushroom kernels from eBay. Aluminium foil over the top of a large pot. Poke a few holes and heat on high. Shake regularly

Save your cash. The above works 11/10 times

  • Much easier to do stove top. We have an old cast iron pot which is solely for popcorn - old beat up one.

Kids refuse to eat the mwave packet stuff now.

    • Old ones are the best anyway when it comes to cast iron

  • Personally I find the microwave popcorn maker more convenient, it can be washed easily and folds up compact.
    Also it can’t really break.

  • Just heat a non coated pan with olive oil and add salt at the end, avoids all the expense and health issues associated with cheaper fats, bags etc.

    • +2

Surely this air popper uses no fats at all?

  • Possibly, but imo you need some fats to cook properly and for flavour. Olive oil is the best (and most costly) for this, but it's still a cheap, relatively healthy snack that's low in salt if you're careful with it.
