There's little point booking through wotif. You'll find that most of the time you can get similiar or better rates by dealing directly with the hotels or other brokers without incurring the $4.95 admin charge, and sometimes with the added flexibility of free cancellation (wotif charges a hefty $25 to change a booking).

      I disagree,
Just last year we rocked up to a big4 caravan park, they wanted $180/night for a cabin.
walked outside, called WOTIF, they did the same cabin for $90 & chucked in a free newspaper.
we waited 10mins, walked back inside & our 2 night booking was received. we wanted to stay a
third night and went to the owners who umm'd & arrh'd when we asked if they were willing to give us a third night for $90 or should we call WOTIF again, they even tried to add the $5 for the booking fee we would have paid if we used WOTIF - cheeky.

Also booked a motel in Hobart the year before, even called them up to see if they'd match WOTIF's rate ($80 vs $150) - nope…..so WOTIF again saved us money.

      • Same experience in Beijing. Hotel was $250 at door and $150 via wotif even though I told them about wotif they still said no. I sat in the lobby using their free wifi and booked quicksmart before they did any dodgies and took the rooms off inventory. Walk up with my booking and in we went. Night manager wasn't pleased.

Having said that, I do shop around a few sites these days. Wotif still has some good deals occasionally but not nearly as many as they did back in the day.

Best bang for your buck these days is if you can work out the mystery hotels - especially the 5 star ones. Haven't been disappointed yet ;)

But it's always worthwhile when you see a Wotif deal, to search for the hotel website and see if you can get the same rate or better, without the booking fee. Only takes a couple of minutes. Same idea applies to hostel booking sites.

      • 100% agree. Sometimes it is better, sometimes not.

    Is this really a bargain?

  • I never find wotif offering any real good specials. if they do i always end up negotiating with the hotel direct. just my 2c

  • wow wotif used to be the place to book cheap hotels… what happened?? haven't bothered using them in years!

Agree with comments above that the rates direct with hotels are the same and no Wotif booking fee. Sites like Wotif are useful for comparing rates at different hotels all on one site. However, once you have made the decision book direct with the hotel.

Better off looking out for the deals the likes of Accor have on their hotels every so often.

  • I need to get Singapore accommodation at the end of August. Having picked up bargain airfares (Scoot) I also want to get some nice discounted hotel rates. Recommendations of where to look (besides regularly checking OzBargain)?

    • try agoda

and then once you found something from agoda
goto the hotel direct to see how much difference there is

sometimes there is none…sometimes there is quite abit

    • Same here.. booked Scoot for 29 Aug and need accommodation for a week..

      • Same dates as me mate. I am looking at Intercontinental based on a quick Expedia search. Cheapest 5-star.

    • I'm there in Sept and have booked through Accor. Their hotels in Singapore had decent rates. I'm also looking out for whather Accor do one of their sales covering our time there. They did one a while back that just covered stays up to June I think.

If they do have one I'll simply book at the cheaper rate and cancel my existing booking.

  • Thanks OP. Managed to get my booking for June in regional NSW $30 cheaper.
