      • Love the downvotes from all the people in denial! :)

You are correct in that in Australia ripping your physical discs is technically illegal still unfortunately.

      • Please point out the specific legislation that prevents this.

        • +2

You can look up the legislation, I'm not going to waste my time since you are the only who doesn't know.

Here are some easy news articles that covers it

Essentially, circumventing copyright protection is illegal, and there's no way to get the movie off your DVD/Bluray without doing that.

          https://www.smh.com.au/technology/when-can-we-copy-our-dvds-…

          https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2014/07/ask-lh-is-it-legal-for…

I hope you don't also need proof of distributing copyrighted material…

          • -1

@samfisher5986: So the only evidence you have is 3rd party articles from 2014? OK then.

            • +4

@[Deactivated]: There has been no new legislation for anything like this since then, how often do you think the law changes?

Happy for you to provide some evidence that circumventing copyright protection is now legal because that would have been huge news….

You won't find it because its not legal.

          • @samfisher5986:

You can look up the legislation, I'm not going to waste my time since you are the only who doesn't know.

Not really how stating facts works - the onus is on you to provide evidence for what you're saying.

There are specific exemptions for copying movies for private use under s 110AA of the Copyright Act.

However I think that the wording of the legislation is wrong/misleading and doesn't actually line up with the purpose of the legislation in the first place. Specifically the amendment was made with the objective to

recognise common forms of private copying that do not undermine the economic incentives provided by copyright (Copyright Amendment Bill 2006 Explanatory Memorandum)

s 110AA(1)(a) that was enacted with this amendment allows

the owner of videotape embodying a cinematograph film in analog form makes a copy… form for his or her private and domestic use…

This is weirdly worded and makes things a bit confusing when it comes to other media. Remebering digital videotapes and analog optical discs (LaserDisc, sorta) are a thing. The AG's department did say that the limited scope of this section was so

that unrestricted digital-to-digital copying could allow consumers to reproduce the full picture quality and
features provided in commercially produced digital film content (s 2.11 Review of Sections 47J and 110AA Copyright Act 1968)

            but they also say that

This exception allows consumers to continue to be able to view films purchased on video cassette without the need to maintain a video cassette player which are increasingly obsolescent

DVD and Bluray are, in my opinion, more obsolete now than VHS was when that was written.

So technically you're correct - maybe - that DVDs/Blurays can't be copied. But as far as I can see, in the 15 years since this exception was made, I can't see that it's ever been tested because enforcement is effectively impossible, and any damages would be infinitesimal.

            • +2

@johnno07: Of course its correct, you can copy movies all you like as long as you aren't circumventing copyright protection.

Enforcement on many illegal things are effectively impossible, it doesn't mean its not illegal.

However if, for example you shared Plex with the public and somehow got caught, I'm sure they would add on the charges of circumventing copyright protection from your blurays because thats what they do.

Bought lifetime pass a long time ago. Quite enjoy using Plex.

Finally jumped on it thanks, wasn't to play the music I can't get on spotify.

  • Best price I've gotten is A$100, I've seen cheaper as well.

  • +2

I love Plex. Works great on Android, iPad, Samsung TV, Xbox and I think I paid $99.

  • Jellyfin is awesome.

  • +3

I used to be a fanboy of XBMC(the hack on the box), (KODI/openlec/LibreELEC) but ended up moving to PLEX. I can't remember the reason for the change but I'm very happy with PLEX; mature/stable might be the word.

But I'm interested in trying jellyfin to see what the new kid has to offer.

I have a PLEX server running on my Synology NAS.The server is where you store your movie/TV/home videos+photos/music files etc. My Sony and Samsung TVs have plex apps to access the server plus I cast from my plex app on my iphone to a TV with google chrome cast etc.

  • Right now I'm viewing my ripped 4k blu rays via Kodi on Shield Pro, media is stored on my external HDD connected to router so it is accessible via LAN. Everything works ok including HDR but I've read a lot of praise for PLEX. Would using PLEX improve things on my current setup or just stick to Kodi?

    • This is my current setup and the exact answers i'm looking for as well. I use kodi on my Xbox Series X, according to this, Plex doesn't work as well on consoles.

      • This I can confirm. Plex support for consoles is atrocious. Think they focus more on Android, iOS etc.

    • +1

      Probably just stick with Kodi.

Plex is great if you have a NAS setup, want to watch your videos remotely or to share your library with others remotely. With your current setup you'd probably struggle to watch your 4K content remotely, depending on your internet upload speed and lack of hardware transcoding. For my money, I find Plex does a better job of scraping content than Kodi. I watch my local stuff on Kodi, and use Plex for remote access.

You could add the free Plex to your Shield, set it up as a server and test it yourself through out your home or remotely?

    • +2

Plex just centralises everything since it uses the server-client model, meaning you can simply log in to plex on any device and see your library. Kodi keeps its own database of your library/watched list/etc, so if you have 2 devices running Kodi unless you've set up some plugins (which last time i tried years ago was a pain in the arse) your watched lists etc weren't sync'd, so if you watch an episode on one device then go to the other device, it is still marked as unwatched.

If you don't have an always on device capable of running as a plex server though then Kodi is the better option.

  • +1

Got it from previous hack for less…. Love it

  • +3

I got lifetime Plex many years ago for about $50. I like it but I don't think it's worth $128.

  • +2

    Jellyfin for the free win!

  • +6

I've had a lifetime sub for a few years. Recently moved to Jellyfin and haven't looked back. I've even had Jellyfin devs reply to posts within minutes.
Plex has ignored feedback for far too long. Bugs have plagued the platform without any acknowledgment. A few off the top of my head are Livetv buffering, remote play quality, subtitles causing media not to playback and when there's a plex outage you cannot login to the service.
Now they are pushing news notifications, gathering info on what you're watching, when and how often.
Jellyfin is not perfect. There are features missing such as skipping intro, but that's in development. Transcoding in Jelly has been great. The ability to customize your home screen, actually click on Actors/Actresses' and see info, livetv is smooth, apps are improving.
It's definitely not as simple as setting up as plex, but it's a lot more flexible. I'd suggest giving Jellyfin a go before purchasing a lifetime pass with plex.

    • +1

Agree with a number of your points but in terms of 'ease' for technical and non-technical users I still find Plex on top.

I find majority of time Plex is solid, but there are some bizarre choices by their dev team like preventing local use when there is an internet or Plex outage.

    • and when there's a plex outage you cannot login to the service.

I've been using Plex for 10+ years and have literally never once been unable to use Plex because of an outage on their end. I use it pretty much every single day.

Now they are pushing news notifications

What do you mean by this? I've never seen a "news notification" from plex on any device.

      • Actually the inability to use plex when there is an outage is very common, it just depends what are you using.

Its very common with certain Plex apps, and guaranteed to happen when you need to relogin to a device or if you haven't logged into that device before.

Personally I've always used OpenPHT and now I also use Plex HTPC, both which have the ability to authenticate locally so it avoids issues.

This doesn't however discount the huge percentage of Plex users who have had issues using Plex during an outage, thats not fair and its Plex's problem.

I'll also point out that most Plex outages happen while Australia sleeps.

  • Has anyone managed to get this to work with the Turkey payment method? The discount code works for Turkish price structure (₺658,39 TRY > $58.30AUD) but I keep getting the "Selected country does not match Credit Card country errors"

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/666383

I tried to follow the instructions but no luck. Even did the 1 month free, cancel then resubscribe, but still no luck.

    • Wanted to try do this as well, looks like it’s been fully patched up. Can’t seem to find a way around it other than actually having a turkey CC.

    • +1

Will only sign up if this workaround works.. or similar… 😢

    • Tried as well, issue is says I already have a subscription :(

  • I've been using Plex for years and it justified the lifetime purchase a few years ago. I have recently added a Wireguard Pihole on Oracle Cloud Servers and am now unable to connect using my Chromecast when I have the VPN on the laptop running PMS. It's a stretch but has anyone got a similar set up and have it working?

  • -1

Maybe worth it a few years ago, but my recent experiences with the PS5 and smart TV apps have soured me on it (trying to transcode instead of direct playing HDR content, direct played movies skipping straight to the end, constantly buffering infinitely despite it all being hardwired)

    • +2

Transcode decisions are made by the TV/TV app and in 99% of cases are because of limitations by the TV or licensing the TV has.

      • +2

yeh, dont blame plex, blame the ps5 and shitty smart tv apps and dont use em.

    • Samsung tv's don't play nice with plex. One update it works then next one it fails to play anything. I forked out $80 for a chromecast TV just for this issue

    • Playstations always had god awful video compatibility

  • +4

while there are pros and cons to plex and jellyfin, its to each their own, its like asking people what speed internet they need, everyones mileage may vary. Just because people are fans of one and not the other doesnt mean they need to get on a high horse and detail why one is better than the other, at the end of the day its not ur money.

I have lifetime pass and i enjoy the ease of use of plex, if the service goes down i'll just move onto the next best thing. life goes on.

  • +3

Always wanted a lifetime pass, yet always miss the proper good deals on it.

  • this is as cheap as it gets basically, get it!

  • +1

A lot of people are sharing their experiences, so I'll do the dame. I departed Plex about a year ago out of frustration, then tried the free trial-period of Emby, then flipped over to Jellyfin.

I found Jellyfin a little "buggy" for reliable everyday use, and it was missing a couple of features that I had become accustomed to on the other platforms. I switched back to Emby, paid $7 for their app to cover all devices in the house, and I have been very happy ever since based on my simple requirements.

  • I used to love Plex (Have lifetime pass) until they sold out, there android app turned into a complete unusable mess, moving their focus away from a media server to a streaming app, plus problems with dev's not acknowledging any issues, so I tried Emby, and it was pretty good, in fact just as good as Plex was, any issues on the forum tend to get a response from dev's fairly quickly, so bought their lifetime pass and have been using it since.

  • Been using Plex on NVIDIA Shield TV. Its great.
But how do we get the thumbnail for anime?

  • +1

I think some people might be confused as to what this does.

If you're hosting your own media - get it if you want to get additional features.

If you're just using a friend's library, then you don't need it.

  • I have a nvidia shield pro, if I just want to watch my files within my home on tv, what should I use? Any suggestions?

Do I even need these apps?

    • +1

I watch my files, within my home, on TV, streamed from my NAS… and Plex helps a lot to have my 250+ 4K movie collection organised in a visually pleasing way. But for that you don't need to spend $130 on the Plex pass. Free version works just fine.

Just attach an external drive that has your all your media files to your Shield and run a Plex server on it. Much nicer and easier to browse files compared to some explorer/finder style file browser.

      • Thanks for your answer! I don't have a NAS but was planning to connect external hard drive to it only. So it's more for ease of access than for any particular benefit?

So just Plex is fine, no need to look into Jellyfin or others?

    • +1

I use Plex server running on my unraid, sharing my movie/tv/music collection with my various devices..

It's great to keep it simple, i.e. it just works - I can to the in-laws and still stream stuff via the Internet with Plex, no messing about

At home, my main consumer is Nvidia Shield too, works just fine for 4k streaming

      • So your server is online for you to access anywhere? Need Nvidia Shield when you're home? Or is that for connecting to devices?

        • +1

Yes, the server needs to be on all the time.
The Shield is a client for playing the media, you can play wherever Plex is supported (browser, android/apple apps etc)

          • @rob2018: I understand now, thank you!

I have Android TV on my TV, can I install plex there and connect a hard drive? Or it is better to connect to the shield instead?

            • @JL1: The shield itself can act as the plex server BTW. You could then watch plex on your phone/tablet/console/etc anywhere in the world streamed from your shield.

  • It might be worth mentioning that I've bought 'lifetime' previously and despite not being dead I no longer have a looked account.

    They deleted it…

  • +1

Thanks OP, I've put off buying this a heap of times.

  • +1

Love their Plexamp music app. If you have a big collection of flac music it's a must. No need to pay tidal monthly for hi-res music.

  • +1

was on monthly sub to try and jumped on a similar deal after a few months - best subscription i have ever paid for - AND it's for life!

  • +1

Hardware transcoding still not working on the Nvida Shield Pro many months on since Android 11 update.

It appears plex has no fix.

  • +1

Enjoy using Plex. Switched over from XBMC long ago after running in tandem for a long time because I like the centralised db. Decided to check when I bought my lifetime subscription and for how much : July 2014 for USD75 - which was about AUD85 then. Very happy that I bought it then. Other than serving inside our home I used to use it to transcode stuff onto my phone - which is a great feature - but not using that atm. If looking to purchase now would obviously look at the alternatives, but it does everything I use it for, so no need. Have always run it from my Ubuntu home media server / MythTV PVR back end.

  • Do you still need to purchase the $7 Plex android app after this? or does that become free

    • +1

      It's free with the pass

  • I might be the exception, but I don't transcode or horde data. I pay €12 per month for a 4tb seedbox and delete most things after they're watched.

I trust the data centre who I lease my shared server from supports the Plex Devs.

  • +1

    got it thanks.

  • +1

Just an FYI, I just used this code to purchase a lifetime subscription (May 30th 2022, 23:25) so still working after listed expirey, weird, but I'm not complaining.

    • Nice. that's a bonus. The date they gave on the sale page when it went up was : 23:59 UTC on May 27, 2022
