Mitsubishi 470L Fridge - MR-WX470F-W-A - $2682 Delivered @ Appliances Online

120

$100 off at eBay with code PLSMAY5

I believe it is the smaller version of https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/698034 and the larger one doesn't fit my small flat.

I have heard great reviews about mitsubishi fridges. But can anyone justify ~$1000 difference in price between one of these and a LG/Haier fridge?

Edited: Apparently only one left on ebay

I still don't understand why people pay so much for fridges. Could someone care to explain?

      • +6

You posed a question asking for bidet recommendations. Why would people spend so much on a toilet seat!?

      • I was hoping you'd be on the right side here considering your reply here

Your logic applies to robot vacuums and fridges…

Let's not talk about levels of stupidity…

    • +3

Lasts longer, made in Japan, longer warranty, better design, more efficient, quieter, looks better…

    • I'm guessing it will last longer? I'm trying to convince myself too

    • +1

      Made in Japan

    • Why would that many buy Merc or BMW when Toyota can also do the job?
      Same story with Miele.

      • +1

Image and status would be right up there

    • I am at a loss to explain. Unless it doubles up as a reverse cycle air conditioner.

Wasn't there a hisense of the same size with a 6 star energy rating for $1k at JB HiFi.

      I got a 430L Chiq normal think it is 4 stars (333kwh a year) for like $650 with a 5 year warranty.

      • +2

The first fridge I ever had was a national/Mitsubishi. Lasted about 30 years. Only got rid of it because it was deemed to be inefficient now. I don't expect anything to last that long these days because of all the electronics, and because people can't "explain" good quality, well made products. It's just disappointing to see.

        • +1

Even many Australian built fridges lasted a long time in daily use.
45yrs for family's Whirlpool. Looked almost the same as day it arrived - shiny chrome!

But that's no basis to buy those brands now!

Fridges are now built to be transported around the world. So weight of major components (eg compressor) has been reduced. That seems to sacrifice longer working life.

Factories produce same model to be sold under different brands, & prices.

Insulation has improved - giving better performance and less energy consumption.

          Check the stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐(min)
This fridge (8.5 times the price of mine & smaller!) has same 4stars!

Testing mine with a power meter, confirmed the energy efficiency rating over time. (333kWh/yr) Not greatly different to 45yr old fridge it replaced.

Like all appliances, understanding how to use & care for them can extend their life. Coastal conditions can be an appliance killer - corrosion.

    • Why even bother having a fridge in the first place…

      • You're living without one?

        • -1

No but if you want to save… you could live without one … just walk to the markets daily like they do in 3rd world countries

          • @hippyhippy: What a "romantic" notion…
Why don't YOU try it! Rather than theorising others should do it??

So spend hours to walk to the markets daily (which effectively loses you an income) to save money by not having a cheap or scrounged fridge…??

And unlike societies set up for such daily shopping, we don't have the specialised & readily accessible market places. It could be created, but not for 1 shopper without a fridge & on foot!

The economics of that in this commerce driven developed world probably don't make any sense.

Volunteering in poor villages in Myanmar, I found many locals would prefer not to do it either! THEY HAD TO - there was no other option!

I used to do that! When I was actually a hippie in the hills decades ago!

Living off grid. Few bills. Was easier if not a meat eater & grew a lot of own food.
Had a scrounged tiny gas fridge from a caravan. But transport costs to get supplies ate into the savings, especially with a lack of reasonable income.

Everyone there eventually gave up on your romantic notion.

Ok for a while, but there are other solutions!
Like buy a new good cheap fridge as I did. (About 2days work on minimum wage. Been in use for 3yrs so far.)
Or get a free one someone is getting rid of (if in good working order). That's what I usually did.

            • @Rather be Travelling: The op was questioning why pay for such a nice fridge… I was just pointing out that he could pay nothing if he wanted…

    • -4

Too much money ,stupidity, image. They might be better but not 4 times better.lol

  • -1

Under a grand for this one, and the interior layout is better too:

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lg-478l-top-mount-refrigerato…

    • Only two layers for the freezer section… I'm looking for either a bottom mount or a french door

      • The freezer is actually the second bottom drawer. Bottom drawer is for your fruit and veges.

      • +1

and the warm hands of energy companies / fridge maker in your pockets.

    • -1

      Top mount, very classy…

      • Not sure why but top mounts generally have better energy efficiency then bottom mounts then followed by french door / side by side.

        • Yes I noticed that too.
          Maybe cold flows downwards? Lol.

          Don’t know why I got downvoted…
Bottom mount is more practical as we use the freezers less in general.

          • @mrgeckoz:

            Don’t know why I got downvoted…

People selling fridges get more money from bottom mounts. Probably a bot farm voting you down.

      • Bottom mount is less energy efficient.

    • +2

some people has very limited space to put the fridge in unfortunately
compare the dimensions on both fridges, although it could seem to be small differences to some other people, it could mean the fridge can fit into the space/front door or not.
in my case my option is only going with fisher paykel for less volume (not cheap either), or going to this mitsubishi
everything else would probably only 400 liter or less that could fit the space

i hate the price that I had to pay though, though my wife repeatedly said she loves the fridge

  • +4

I have the larger version of this fridge (MRWX743CSA2), but i believe its basically the same features but a bit smaller

    Pro's
    - Made in Japan
    - Long warranty
    - Ice drawer
    - Super chilling/defrosting drawer
    - Top section is very reconfigurable (some shelves can be retracted rather than removed from tall items)
    - The front being all glass (no finger marks and it doesnt dent)
    - Basically silent when operating

    Con's
    - Kinda expensive
    - Nothing else i have noticed in the last year

    • +2

small footprint as well compared to other fridges
I think this fridge is designed with very limited space in Japan's typical houses.
The other similar alternative would be hitachi fridges with similar layout and similar prices.

      • I had a small opening to play with, so luckily this one fit.
A lot of fridges with that litre-age are much wider.

        • All the other french door/multi-door are at least 91cm+ wide whereas my opening is only 90cm wide

    • +3

I've had mine for >8 years and it hasn't skipped a beat

      • +1

Have used Mitsubishi fridges in Japan - well made & designed.

But, experience based on past purchases, is not necessarily indicative of future purchases. A lot can change over 8yrs in production. I used to repair appliances.

Extended family had fridges still operating after 45yrs! Come back in another 37 years & tell us it's still working😉

  • with appliances online, sometimes they give you small additional discount if you call them

    • I might give them a call. Thank you!

  • That is one ugly fridge.

    • +1

      Incorrect.

In person, they look good. Or at least, as good as a fridge can reasonably be expected to look.

Glad I bought the 535L SS front 4star Fridge $414 Delivered & got $100 off.

3yrs on - working efficiently & great for what I wanted. Very quiet. Warranty was only 2yr, but not needed.

Bought at discount price - as likely to be moving. Something to consider…
Most move frequently & may be long distance to lug a fridge.
one third of young Australians aged 20 to 29 change address every 12 months and two thirds move every five years

So will sell fridge at little loss, rather than the inconvenience + cost of moving, & then won't have issue of if fridge will fit in new kitchen.

Previous fridge (gift from extended family) had lasted 45yrs before replaced! Not the oldest working fridge they had!
So have a smile when people are discussing buying this - as it will last a long time😊

    • +1

From the same great company that brings you g'day suncream and a healing stone roller. You just know this is going to be another long lasting fridge!

But yeah really for the price, I understand why people buy cheap stuff, especially if you're on a tight budget as more people are. But where possible, I try and buy solid things. Less effort to replace, more enjoyable to use, less stuff going into landfill, and where/how something is made matters to me.

      • Seems you don't understand, despite claiming you do!

Not much point paying 8.5 times what I paid, to get a smaller fridge with features I don't need!

Astivita are importers. They were exiting importing fridges. Hence half price & negotiated $100 discount. $314 delivered was great price😊

Identical fridges from same manufacturer, could be found in retailers like this, just with a different badge & much higher price!!

My decision was made on basic economics. (Had plenty of $) I just know when it is best not to spend unnecessarily.

As I said, that was a purchase knowing I would be moving (like most do). It met my needs. Moving with a fridge & finding it fits new kitchen isn't fun.

Have used Mitsubishi fridges in Japan, so I know them. Maybe another time.

Met plenty of disappointed people who bought expensive fridges that broke down far earlier than expected. At least I know I'll be happy with my purchase!!

I used to repair appliances. Parts were often not available or were too expensive for older models.

        Fridges don't go to landfill!!
I repaired those family fridges to keep them running for decades - not common these days. So kept out of the recycled metal market, until unable to be repaired.

My 50yr old washing machine went to metal recyclers last month. Was a good model with water recycling. It still operated very well, after a redesign with digital controllers replacing the electro-mechanical system. Just too heavy to move with & had been given a free Japanese washer to replace it.

        • Seems you don't understand, despite claiming you do!

incipient is trying to get people to buy once pay twice. Which is the reverse of buy cheap buy twice. Some kind of twisted insurance.

          • @netjock: I agree its worth paying more for better quality (which this fridge is).
It's in my nature. But so is not spending more than justifiable… Degree study in Cost Benefit Analysis!

            But how much more??
            pay twice??

Definitely not at 8.5 times the price I paid😜
To get a smaller capacity fridge, with same 4star efficiency!!
            That shows little understanding!

I rarely pay for appliances, as I can repair & maintain them for next to free! So know a bit about this field!

I like this fridge, having used similar in Japan. Like the drawers, but not paying the 7.5 times extra price for features I don't need!

And from experience in appliance repairs, better build does not guarantee longer life.

Only need for short time then sell, so my fridge is so much more cost effective.
            After all, this is OzBargain!

(At a 2021 Ozbargain meet, the organiser tried to convince me to buy a new Tesla… "You can afford it"… Some just love expensive things, not me!
Still driving a perfectly suited to my needs, well maintained, & economical 1990 Honda Accord - I got free.
Some might say I should have paid twice the price😉)

I have got this fridge and love. Love the drawer feature and very spacious. The drawers do help to keep more stuff then shelf in my opinion.

    • Agree. Great design & quality.
Drawers mean not needing to so often open fridge doors. Convenient for commonly used products.

Handy as can keep similar foods in a drawer, knowing where they should be. No more searching at back of fridge!

More can be stored in same space, as can be stacked in drawer. A lot of normal fridge is just empty space
(In normal fridge, I added vegetable bins from old fridge to achieve similar result. Open fridge door, grab appropriate drawer, remove to counter & close fridge.)

Used similar fridges in shared accommodation in Japan. Drawers were great to keep each person's food separate.

Would consider buying in future, if not so expensive.
