Ubiquiti Networks U6-Pro UniFi 6 Dual Band WiFi 6 Access Point $245 (RRP $284) + Delivery @ AusPCMarket

60

For those that missed the eBay deal or that don't have eBay Plus.

Seems to be the cheapest around at the moment. Most stores are selling at $269 + delivery at the moment, which they're saying is "discounted". Tried to price match at Scorptec, umart with no luck - this is apparently below their cost.

Postage was $13 for "standard insured" in Sydney.

  • Dual-band WiFi 6 (802.11ax)
  • 5 GHz (4x4 MU-MIMO) band with a 4.8 Gbps throughput rate
  • 2.4 GHz (2x2 MIMO) band with a 573.5 Mbps throughput rate
  • Operates at full 4x4 MIMO with 160 MHz bandwidth
  • 300+ concurrent client capacity
  • Guest Traffic Isolation
  • Included universal mounting plate, backing plate, and screw kit

Take care, have fun.

  • How is the range compared to the cheaper LR

    • I came across this article the other day: https://evanmccann.net/blog/2022/5/u6-pro-and-u6-mesh-review

      • Thanks, that was a good review..
U6-Pro is 6th gen while the new LR and lite are still gen 5.
        Also QUALCOMM v MediaTek.

    • The cheaper LR will be the wifi 5 model. The wifi 6 LR is more expensive than the pro.

The 6 range is very robust and where I’d be dropping my money. If coverage is a concern there’s likely an argument to be made to getting 2x U6-Lites, which on sale have been available in the $120-$140 range. Would need more cabling and PoE ports but.

LR is long range so that will always have better range

  • It has a single 1 Gbps port that is not enough for Wifi 6. Consider something cheaper if you do not care about speed too much or something different if you actually plan to use wifi 6.

    • I agree that 1Gbps is not enough for AX5400 but I think it's perfectly fine for Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 5 realistically tops out around 500Mbps on 2x2, so it's still worth it.

      • I agree, that most wifi 5 devices released in the past 5 years get around 500 Mbps in real-life. Some laptops go faster, but you need good AP and good laptop for that. If you invest in wifi 6, would not you want to invest into something with 2.5Gbit ethernet that can do over 1Gbps in real-life?

        • +3

Not necessarily. A lot of the benefits of WiFi 6 are around capacity, congestion etc and not just speeds. For most people pretty much all their home network traffic is going to be client to the internet anyway which in Australia means you’re probably lucky to get 100mbit, let alone 1Gbit or more.

For people doing heavy stuff internally you still need to also then have routers and computers with 2.5gbit or higher capabilities too, in conjunction with the AP, and depending on the task a PCs hardware could also limit throughput.

Definitely would be nice to have 2.5Gbps gear, but I think the vast majority of households whose most data intensive activity is watching a few Netflix streams, it’s not going to matter and it’d be wasted money to race out and replace hardware.

Benchmarks for these model APs posted by another person also had them APs performing bellow 1Gbit anyway.

It’ll become more relevant in the future to more people, but even then we’re probably not looking at too many homes in AU having speeds above 1Gbit any time soon and by the time that arrives hardware purchased todays probably going to be aging for other reasons.

    • In the real world it's very difficult to achieve over 1Gb of throughput on even the best WiFi 6 connection - if you have other devices on the network and other networks in range (which basically everyone does unless you live on acreage) then 1Gb isn't really limiting.

  • How does this compare to ACpro? I guess this would be better considering this is wifi 6 and the other is wifi 5?

  • I've never dealt with this store before, are they decent? Thinking of buying a mobo from them.

    • +1

Used them several times before and never had any issues.

      • +1

Thanks, found it slightly cheaper on Amazon so went with them as I've got prime and returns are usually easy if there's a problem.

  • I have a 2 storey house. Have a UniFi ac pro now downstairs. Thinking to put a u6 upstairs. Any issues?
Which one has better 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz?
