7-Eleven Coffee - Very Weak?

I used to go to 7-Eleven a while ago pretty often to get their dollar coffees. It's been a while and I thought I'd go and get one. I got a $2 and thought it tasted quite weak. Thought it was a once off issue, so I went back the next day or so and got a $1 coffee. Same thing, tasted like a hot milk drink.

I told the 7-Eleven person working there and they said they'll log a fault with the machine, but I'd bet it's working fine, it's just the miniscule amount of coffee that's the issue.

Anyone else found 7-Eleven coffee is just warm milk now?

I don’t have milk coffees however the last 2 out of 3 7-eleven coffees I purchased were under-full.

Ampol/Woolworths increased the price of a small coffee from $1 to $1.50.

    Did you try another 7/11?

I just put another shot in. Normally get a hot choc cup, press the reg latte button, stir the chocolate in while pouring. Once finished pouring, press the reg short black button…. Double shot Mocha.

The machines are self-service. You control what ends up in the cup to a large degree.

Just drop a couple of short black shots into the cup and THEN run the flat white or latte program.

    Simple.

Edit: Just confirming I wasn't imagining things

    • WHAT?!?

That's genius… I usually just press long black.. will 2 short black still fit in the $1 cup?

No idea mate (I don't drink 7-Eleven coffee) but a typical short black is typically around 30ml. I reckon you'd be VERY safe unless that $1 cup size is made for ants.

I would not discount 711 to stitch me up like that lol

      • +2

Yes of course, just add as many shots as you like and then top up with water. I do this all the time.

        • Is hot water just variable ? had always assumed it was pre-set to fill er right up to the preset cup size.

      • Yep.. Can confirm. I always press Short Black twice in a $1 cup…. and only pay $1
In saying that, the cashier can't see what is in the cup, just the fact it's the small $1 cup.

    • Wow okay.

    • With the old machines you could put in three/four espresso shots (or a long black + a shot) then hit hot milk to add a dash to make it slightly whiter than black. Sometimes the people in the shop would look at you funny or say something when you were putting multiple "drinks" into a single cup. If there is a line of people behind you they start to get pissy when you're making multiple drinks if you care about those sideways glances :P

With the newer touch screen ones I usually grab a $2 cup, put in 1 x $1 short black + 1 x $1 cappuccino/flat white (I reckon there is enough space for another short black too if you were so inclined). At least this way if they ever say anything it's two $1 drinks in 1 x $2 cup.

Ah, got to love the shrinkflation component of inflation ;)

Much easier to reduce the amount of coffee than it is to hike the price :P

    • shrinkflation

      winning answer.

I haven't notice a change lately, but the large seems weaker than the small, almost like they put the same shot and just add more milk. Also the large is only 1.5x the volume of the small, so better off getting 2 smalls. I also add an extra shot first

IMO The Coles express machines make much better coffee than 7-11 since they replaced them all a year or so ago. And you get to pick he strength

    • Never tried the Coles Express coffee. Will try it again. Thanks.

      • Coles Express best of the servo coffees.

I'll have to try Coles coffee again - I tried one once and it was horrible and didn't go back

      • +2

same I tried it a few times just before 7-11 popularity really surged and all the times it was bloody horrible. Burnt / bitter as.

  • Yup, you are right. I have been having 7Eleven coffees for a while (on and off) and can confirm that these days the overall coffee is weak. If you noticed, the actual concentrated coffee that comes out is right at the start and only for a few seconds and then, it’s foamy coffee (aka more water blend in with coffee roast) and then comes a huge dump of milk.

The other day I got a regular coffee but added two more shots first. Saw someone do that and was I was like ‘cool, that’s a great idea!’
Huge difference if you add a double shot first and then put a normal small/regular coffee.

    • I might need to start doing this.

Try another store, as there is some differences between machines/stores indeed.

Buys a $1 coffee from a tightarse franchise that has a history of underpaying its workers and wonders why it tastes like warm brown water…

    • Exactly! What do you expect for $1 coffee?

  • "Its just brown and water"

  • +1

I used to get a $3 coffee, push the $1 short black, and then the $2 flat white.
This way I didn't feel like I was rorting the system.
I got 3 shots, 2/3rds of the milk.
Sure the cup isn't full, but its the ratios that matter.

    • You could also press the hot milk button until the cup is full

  • +1

Buy a $1 espresso first, then in the same cup buy your latte or whatever. Still costs the same.
Other than that, if you've got a Coles Express nearby, they're the best for coffee.

Apparently Maccas, 7/11 and Coles use the same roaster for beans. Coles Express and Maccas coffee is a lot better than 7/11. Even United do better than 7/11.

But hey when it's $1 for a small coffee you can't expect it to be amazing. Certainly better than instant!

  • Find the Coles $1 long Black set to 'strong' often does the job

  • small coffees are the way to go.

  • Did you try other one . I don't drink coffee green tea only but I know few of my friends going on every weekend for a coffee will ask them if there is some better option available.

  • I tongue punch short blacks, can confirm nothing has changed. Consistently average coffee just the way I like it~

$1 coffee tastes like shit … what a surprise.

  • Check Coles Express coffee, there is an option for extra strong one for $1

    • I only ever had one. It tasted like burnt.

  • I just tried the 2x short black plus water in a $1 cup. Strength is now slightly stronger than the $1 version of a long black from 12 months ago and a lot stronger than the current version of a long black.
