      • ah cheers didn't notice.

Are there any hdmi based ones that can do 75" screens ?

        • There would be, you just need a longer LED strip or extensions.

It's doable by DIY but there's a lot of research and troubleshooting needed. Basically, you need to capture video feed that would go to a receiver (or use a splitter), and convert to an input for Raspberry Pi.

Might be easier if you have an LG TV too as that has a screen record feature which you can send to hyperion and the LED controller.

    • Another option is https://ambivision.tv/ - currently 15% off with AX15.

Camera isn’t tethered to the top of the TV (can be anywhere in room where it sees the Tv) & different LED strip lengths available; and choice of RGB or WRGB.

I’ve been tossing up between both of these for a while, and was leaning towards Ambivision. The colours seemed better.

This comparison video shows 2 main competitors against Govee:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB5h8XAgBew

Phillips Hue is popular and expensive, and Light Mi Neo SyncBox does the same for a fraction of the price.
Both of them use HDMI passthrough, which means you can only do this for input source and not in-TV apps.

      • Thanks Rev, great info.

"this for input source and not in-TV apps"

bugger that was the whole point >.<

        • +1

yep, that's why I pulled trigger on Govee at good price.

@NoDowt shared Ambivision, but it'll come to ~$280AU for a camera you can place elsewhere….

Also as other commenters shared, DIY with a Raspberry Pi and Hyperion can work. I wouldn't mind doing it, but really it's gonna be the same cost as this price Govee, but be a pass-through option like Hue and Neo.

          • @RevMet: so other than a camera, there's no solution that works with the tv apps?

            • @Osiris: apologies for delay, hope you made your decision before sale finished.

correct, because TVs dont have video output, only inputs.

              • +1

@RevMet: Cheers for replying. No purchase from me though, I just don't think a camera is an elegant solution but I appreciate the limitations based on what you;'ve mentioned. The tv apps work well for my set up but I may move back to having the box directly connected to the tv at a later stage and then i'd have an input which opens the door for other other solutions you listed.

                • @Osiris: really the fix for the tv apps issue is purchasing a google tv for another ~$80 (on OzB at least haha) but as I stated, this makes the whole solution more expensive to avoid a lil dongle on top of the tv… which can be avoided anyway.

Have this and it’s worth it!

I put it on a smart plug and combined it with Samsung SmartThings (I have a Samsung tv) to automatically turn in and off with the TV

  • Sorry, what are these again?

Something i didn't know about or thought i needed 2 mins ago. Now I'm pulling the trigger on one. Welcome to ozb

  • Any smaller one? My TV is 49"…

This looks interesting. Can’t say I love the idea of the camera poking out over the top but do the hdmi box-type ones get in the way of 4K/120fps passthrough?

I kind of like this doesn’t need to interfere with the rest of your gear at all. Provided you can power it without any wires (I’m wall mounted and have power up there anyway) it stays physically independent of the rest of your system. Mmmm… I’m tempted.

    • I ordered one and will try the bottom mount option first.

The problem with the HDMI/android box route is that you may need additional boxes and processing 4K might be too resource intensive. I was going to pursue this but needed to get a video signal splitter and some coding..

      • I’m the same. Ordered earlier this arvo and will give it a crack with the OLED :)

OP, thanks for alerting me to this style of approach to ambient lighting. I’ve been keen on the concept for some time but didn’t realise there were systems that don’t invade the rest of your setup (HDMI), and that don’t require a $500-$700 investment.

    • Also have to consider it won't work with tv apps because they aren't going through a HDMI cable

  • Another option is https://ambivision.tv/ - currently 15% off with AX15.

Camera isn’t tethered to the top of the TV & different LED strip lengths available; and choice of RGB or WRGB.

I’ve been tossing up between both of these for a while, and was leaning towards Ambivision. The colours seemed better.

    • Problem with that is if you like to tilt or swivel the tv, then wouldn’t you need recalibration?

      • Maybe, don’t have one to confirm… but from memory of the reviews I watched a while back it auto detects, however I think you do need to initiate the auto-detection (and then only manually calibrate if required).

    • Thanks for this; it's good to know that I have an alternative options to use it with my 99" projector.
I suspect the camera is connected the power cable and connected to the LED strip over Wifi?
So that I can put the camera on top of the projector

      Thanks

Update: found the answer - it is connected to power cable only

      • +1

Yep, both the camera & led controller have a power connection & that’s it.

Not sure if their 15% offer is still going, if not, they usually have higher % discount around cyber Monday if ya wanted to hold off.

  • Anyone have delivery today and already setup? Would love to hear your first impressions.

Mine will arrive tomorrow - not sure I'll have time to give it a spin before the weekend but looking forward to testing. I'm just hoping I can find camera positioning that doesn't catch the eye too much. For OLED it will need to go bottom mount as the top is wafer thin.

    • +1

Use one of the sticky sponges it comes with. Use a heavy double sided tape. Tape it at the top of the OLED TV in the middle. Presto. You've got a mount to stick the camera to.
Did that for my LG CX. I have a LG soundbar, so bottom mounting wasn't an option.

      • Great - will take a look at that as an option.

I also have an LG CX - amazing television :)

  • Are there any guides that anyone can recommend me to follow to make this light strip turn on/off when I turn on my tv?

I guess I need to buy some smart plugs?

    Thanks

    • I have it connected to my Google Home. So when I turn on my CX. I'll just tell google to turn on "TV Lights"

  • Anyone know if it matters which way you stick down the LED strip? There are arrows on the strip - does it matter either way if you go clockwise or counterclockwise?

Edit: going from bottom right up as per instructions. All good. Counter.

    • +1

Doesn't matter as the app will ask you

      • Thanks :)
