Pretty decent spec latest gen laptop for the price. Can get 1 TB version for $50 extra under the same deal. Noticed screen brightness become 250 Nits compared to 300 nits on 512GB version.

I just wish this model had the num pad, seems ridiculous to have all that space either side of the keyboard.

    • -1

It's not "space" there are 2 large Waves MaxxAudio Pro and up-firing speakers on either side of the keyboard,
If there's ever a good reason to give up the numpad, this is it. Sure if you're a deaf accountant I would understand your complaint.

      • How good are the actual speakers though? I've yet to hear a laptop that sounded better than an ipad/S8 ultra

    Shopback 10%!

    • @renaldof "Shopback 10%!" Before noticing your comment I was about to write "Shopback 10%??"
      That's $134.89 cashback, I like!!

  • did they fix the touch pad issues?

The following article turned me off the new 12th Gen Intels.

I wonder what they're like in practice though?

    • Yes, benchmarking more important than ever.

Hey OP maybe change your deal link to this: https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/new-inspiron-16…

The link you have trigger my adblocker filters.

With that out of the way, this is a very decent deal, the screen is subpar but the CPU is definitely one of the best in this category.

Unlike previous gen intel lower powered cpus where the 4c8t -u options (or even 11th gens H35 which is really the -u chips just with more wattage) that gets dominated by the AMD's 8c16t -u series. These new P28 chips are actually 'downclocked' H45 chips thats actually very good performance wise. They do get cut down PCIe lanes but that shaved a lot of uncore usage that meant these chips have decent battery life (yes its not as good as the 6000 series but its still very decent).

These will go head to toe with amds lower wattage options and even surpassing them in cpu heavy workloads over the 35w mark (these can boost to something like 60+watts but of course that will depend on the cooling of the machine) and of course single threaded king still go to intel and these have slightly higher L3 cache (but not that it matters much givien this isnt a gaming laptop). iGPU wise it does get beaten by the 6000 series with RDNA2 by a long bit, but its better than 5000 series' iGPU so definitely nothing to sneeze at neither.

Hmmm…So compared to AMD 6000, these have:
      -worse battery life
      -worse iGPU
      -equal performance?
Considering AMD 6000 is bringing TB, I don't see many upsides to Intel?

You have to look at it this way:

        • you cant net a good 6000 -hs chip equipped laptop at anywhere close to this price.

        • And compared to the 6000 -u chips the P28 chips have a decidely performance advantage.

        • worse iGPU and worse batter life yes, but its 1. smaller than ever before, and 2. a trade off compared to cpu performance that you will have to make the call which to go for.

Also AMD 6000 is not bringing TB as I know off. Not that this machine comes with TB anyways. From what I understand AMD had access to TB a long time ago but the cost is the things thats stopping AMD laptops from getting thunderbolt. And it seems like companies like asus are implementing their own solutions to thunderbolt (and a better one really, albeit that cost is passed on to the consumer)

  • @OP, your title is inaccurate.

    Intel 1255U comes with 1TB SSD = $1,379.00
    Intel 1260P comes with 512 SSD = $1,348.99

  • RAM is socketed.
A bit disappointing no USB 4/TB.

    • +1

@McFly "USB 4/TB" definition; USB 4 thunderbolt, not USB 4 terabytes
      "RAM is socketed" = good

  • Everyone you can get extra 7% off these deals with the education store discount coupon. Can get the 1260p laptop for around $1250. I think its a great deal, cheapest way to get a 12th gen laptop I think. But downsides of this laptop seem to be the screen, and overall build quality. I am tempted to buy one but no real videos on the i7 1260p performance yet, I want to know if it can run rocket league

  • Worth noting that the 300 nit screen is also better spec overall. 100% sRGB on the 300 nit 'ComfortView Plus' vs 45% NTSC on the 'ComfortView'.

The 300 nit ComfortView Plus also has better viewing angles, better contrast and better response time. IMO it is very much worth going for the model with the 300 nit screen.
