Whilst its cheap and will get the job done, the button isnt on the side like many walkie talkies so its not as easy to PTT. Also, no recharge point so you'll need to take out 3 (eneloops) and recharge them to use them again, or use alkalines.

    • removing the 3 x AAA every time to recharge gets really really old

but… under $7 per unit for about 300m range if that..

      i mean… sure???

If you're using it for a day or two its 100% okay. You wouldnt want to keep the batteries in there after use anyways.

If you're looking for something to use on the daily. Look elsewhere.

        • JB hifi always have Unidens that accept 2 x AA rechargables…. THAT Uniden INCLUDE… and they use a charge cradle too… but alas they cost real money like $70 a pair…

          • @tonyjzx: Aldi had some 2 pack rechargeable walkie talkies for like $30 or $35… but after so many years those battery packs are dead.

would have been sweet deal if they use USBC charging port…..

  • What do you guys suggest instead?

Any baofeng with a programming cable

      • Why the programming cable?

        • Makes putting the aus frequencies on there much quicker

      • +1

        But ACMA…

      • 100% agree, you won't find better value anywhere.
I've had one for 5 years now and it is as good as the day I got it.
I have managed to talk to people 5km away in a suburban area which I think is good.
I think I paid $35 for a 5W unit and they are still a similar price, I think the 9W units are around $40-50.

          5w max is legal

          • @ShipShapeRC: Thanks I never knew that, I'd suggest then anyone not wanting to break any rules only buy 5w then.

            • +1

@Spendmore: Well a non-Australian certified anything is technically not legal for public use, however if you stick with 5w and lock it to Aussie legal frequencies only, is there really an issue? Oddly enough, if you are a HAM licenced radio person you can legally own and use non-Australian certified equipment anyway.

              • @ShipShapeRC:

if you stick with 5w and lock it to Aussie legal frequencies only, is there really an issue?

That depends on how well it was designed and made. All transmitters emit "spurii" - although they are supposed to only transmit on the frequency you set them to, they also have lower-level transmissions on other frequencies too. Most of the c-tick testing is to make sure the other transmissions are small enough that they won't interfere with the people who have licensed those other frequencies.

If your transmitter does cause a problem to those people, they complain to the ACMA, and then they come searching for the source of the interference. Here's an example of a television accidentally acting as a transmitter, where the owner wasn't fined because of the accidental and unintended nature of the incident:

            @ShipShapeRC:

            5w max is legal

And these are Baofeng we are talking about. Even the 10W versions are not 10W. Baofeng are overly generous with their "wattage" ratings on their UFH hand helds.

      • These are a bit of a nightmare to find on eBay, too many bloody options

Can I twist your arm for a specific recommendation, please? Nearly bought the 300w edition before I realized, lol. I'm guessing the uv-5r with cable is the business

        • +1

          Yes uv-5r with cable.
Then search Google for 80 channel Australia .CSV and use a program called chirp to program it.
Then use the radio in channel mode and you will be fine.

300W handheld - hah! Rubbish Chinese specs.

          • @ShipShapeRC: Like their lumen count on light bars

            • +1

@Spendmore: Yeah, look at the amps and volts and do some math, you can't even trust the Watts on lightbars. Lumens is insanely over stated too.

              • @ShipShapeRC: I find solar panels are one of the worst, even Aussie sellers promising massive figures that aren't possible.

          • @ShipShapeRC: I had a giggle at that, don't worry, haha

            Awesome info team, much appreciated.

      ‘F’

      • +2

Was down from $69 so I'm still happy (and I'll price protect)

        • Any good?

          • @DannyBoy: Depends on what your use case is.

            • @ATangk: Was thinking use them whist on the kayaks open water? 2x kayaks and one back at the house on the water. Being all open surely they should reach a kilometre?

              • @DannyBoy: 1km might be a bit of a stretch for these, not sure how the RF is when bouncing over the water. But they're not waterproof in any way so if you choose to, be careful. If you said 500m, id say 100%, if you left the radio outside the back on a table or something.

              • @DannyBoy: Near water, it would be worth getting something with a water proof rating and a stronger signal.
                e.g. https://oricom.com.au/product/uhf2500-2-watt-waterproof-hand…

                • @Roger Ramjet 99: Probably worth it, I'd be careful when using it but can't say that for the next person 🤣

                  Cheers for the link

  • Koooooweeee! Is probably as good as 0.5W. Seriously these are toys only. 5W is useful.

  • Has anyone tried sticking a 10440 single? (AAA-sized rechargeable 3.7V lithium ion)

Not sure if the battery life will be better than 3x AAA?
