My partner almost never plays hers and is extremely gentle with her controllers but one of her trigger springs broke playing Ratchet and Clank.
@mackdiddy: Yeah definitely a luck of the draw thing, I've got massive gorilla hands and the triggers and analog sticks have definitely taken a beating but still going strong. Having said that I do game far less than the average gamer, so who knows controller may die exactly 2yrs and 1 day from date of purchase.
You'd be surprised, the build quality on the originals at least was poor. Was surprised it only lasted as long as it did. One spring in a haptic trigger went and left stick developed drift.
For comparison I got about 3 years out of my first joycons before the left stick developed drift.

Mine are fine but my partner's from her console 2 months post-launch had a broken trigger.

On my 4th Ps4 controller, hope they improved the quality of the joysticks on these.
Blue, Pink, Purple are more likely to be the improved controller (less stick drift and better triggers).

Sony have made improvements to all colours, but white, black or red could potentially be older stock.
Have to look on back of controller for the FCC ID.
Older ones ends in the number 1, whereas the FCC ID on the redesigned controllers ends in the letter A

I like them better than the xbox controllers but too hard to get working with games on windows pc. It made me buy Elden Ring on my ps5 instead of playing it on my pc with my 3080gtx

huh? you just pair it with bluetooth and it just works, at least with Steam. I'm literally playing Elden Ring on PC with one right now.

How many do you have? I have 4 ps5 controllers and two Series X controllers. The colour ones are tempting.

Only 1 PS5 controller actually. But a ton of Xbox and Switch controllers.
One thing that I really liked about the PSP and PS Vita D-pad, and hated about the PS4 controller D-pad, was that the former had four independent buttons for each direction, while the latter consisted of a single piece that rocked back and forth, which is abysmal for playing rhythm games at a high level. On the PS4 controller, pressing "left" on the D-pad wouldn't be "purely" pressing left, it would slightly press "up" and/or "down" as well, which would ruin your combo in various pattern scenarios, such as staircases. The PS4 controller was clearly designed for action games in mind, from my perspective.
Does the PS5 controller have the same unibody style D-pad that the PS4 controller has? This is a make-or-break for me, since a huge proportion of what I play are music rhythm games.

Yes it does. I have both a PS4 and PS5 controller on my desk and they feel the same.

Thanks OP. Grabbed a gen 2 purple one. Shame that the black and red have the same issues as the white. I had to return my white controller after a few months of light use (right trigger spring issue) and now it seems to have some light stick drift.
yeah my original white ps5 controller that came with the console has stick drift. Its a shame honestly..
Terrible. I still have all my old PS from 1 to 4 Pro and all the original controllers still work.

Damn just got it from jb hi-fi price matching Amazon for $79. with commbank offer and jb hi fi perk ended up being $59. Could have gotten for $50 instead if did price match with this.

Have you gone into your local JB/GG and asked to put your name down for in store preorder? That's what a number of other ozbargainers seemed to have success with
I have asked, and the stores local to me have told me they have no idea when new stock comes in or can put me down for a tentative preorder. Maybe some stores are run differently. The ones near me seem worried it might be perceived as a promise or something.
