Samsung 512GB EVO Plus Micro SD Card $82.95 Delivered @ Shopping Square

170

Use as-is, or turn it into a 512GB FIT drive you can keep in your wallet, using one of these tiny USB card readers:

USB2 version: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002049327396.html
USB3 version: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32914296598.html

The USB2 version is smaller, and has protection from pocket lint, but you'll sacrifice a bit of speed as you're limited to USB2 speeds.

This is slightly cheaper than the deal published 5 days ago. Although the price is a little higher, shipping is now free, so the overall price is lower.

Card specs:

  • 120MB/sec write speed (note 1)
  • 130MB/sec read speed (note 1)
  • Standard UHS-I interface
  • A2 V30
  • micro-SDXC card

Note 1: speeds above 105MB/sec are only achievable with readers which "overclock" the UHS-I interface. At the moment, only a very small number of card readers do this, and the ones listed above don't.

Speeds from Officeworks page for the same item: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/samsung-mi…

You may be able to get a price-beat from Officeworks, for an even cheaper price.

  • If anyone is wondering, I use a different card (32GB EVO Plus from several years ago) in a similar USB2 reader. I just timed a large read transfer to RAM disk, and I got 908MB of data from it in 42 seconds, 21MB/sec.

In the comments section of the USB3 reader listed above, someone is claiming 75MB/sec read speed.

I'm currently looking for a 512GB but hoping for a bit cheaper, ideally on amazon. There's currently a Patriot brand drive for 512GB $79.99 with 2 day delivery:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07S98ZVLZ

    but the reviews are mixed.

Personally I use micro SD with something like this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001961813153.html

Then you get high speed transfer and can use in your phone as an OTG device.

I just did a price-beat with Officeworks for $78.80, over the phone, but they'll probably sell out very quickly. According to the tracking link they sent me, it's being delivered today (to inner-city Brisbane).

    • Maybe at end of the year or early 2023. I'm also hanging out for a decent price 512GB.
Bought this back at the beginning of this year. Filled it up with no issues

  • why dashcam or other devices supports a limited sdcard capacity , like 128gb MAX

whilst this random 1 buck reader can read/write 512gb card

    • +1

I have found so far that every device I've used has support higher capacity than stated. Either the capacity has just not not been tested or did not exist when the product came out.

There will be some exceptions, of course.

I just sold my car with a Viofo duo dash cam, I was running a 512gb card in it with no issues.
Pretty sure that unit stated 128gb max capacity..

    • +2

I believe it's because devices like dashcams typically buffer the file allocation table in RAM, so they can quickly write files to the card, and they simply don't have enough RAM to do that for a large-capacity SD card. A reader doesn't have that limitation, the RAM is in the PC it's plugged into.

  • Is this usb 3?

    • The ultra is slower V10 equivalent. Spend the extra for video etc and get the write speeds unless its for storage.
