  • Can you put more ram in it?

    • +2

      sure can! options are available

      • How many slots we talking? 2?

        • +1

          yeah 2

          • @FuseTechAu: Awesome. Is the 16gb option 2x8 or 1x16?

            • +1

@fatherofcats: its 2*8GB , but if you wanted single 16gb message through and we should be able to get one sorted instead!

              • @FuseTechAu: Jeeez i love when a rep actually answers back regarding questions asked!!
                Keep up the good work!

    • i'm sure they can ram in an extra chip or two

    • Baa

  • +2

    8th gen will be nice.

    • 9th better again.

      • nah 10th is better

        • +1

I was about to say 11th is better than 10th but it wasn't

  • Do you know if these have VESA mounts built into them? couldn't see it on the website (or I'm blind).

    • +2

I believe there's a separate mounting bracket you need to buy

      • +1

        Ah alright thanks!

  • Is this good enough / good value to run Home Assistant?

    • +3

More than enough for HA. I have one of these at home running HA, Plex server, Unify Controller, Samba for file shares, and a couple other things besides. Never misses a beat.

      • This is my exact use case but I've read that HEVC is better in 7th gen (8 v 10bit HEVC) do you notice any struggles with streams?

most of my stuff is 1080p streaming to 1440p or 4k screens

        • I haven't noticed any issues, but full disclosure I don't know a lot about video encoding standards, requirements, etc. All I can tell you is most of the content I watch at the moment is x265 & either FHD or QHD. I've had my HP for a few years now, but top of my head I don't recall what the exact CPU is sorry.

        • +1

Based on my internet search, 6th gen does not have HW accelerated 10bit HEVC decoding. 7th gen is probably the way to go if you have HDR content.

          • @juns: Yeah apparently 6th gen has 8bit support, but most of my content is 1080p so it doesn't bother me

          • @juns: Thanks for the info - if im not transcoding, just streaming to a TV, will the fact it cant do 10bit decoding have an impact?

            • +1

@Gmetal: It shouldn't, if your TV or playback device supports hardware accelerated decoding for 10bit HEVC.

However, you should be aware that some device will get plex server to do transcoding if you enable subtitle (burn the subtitle to the video stream).

One particular example is my PS4 Pro.

      • Do you run these all in VMs?

    • Over-power for HA.

    • 4x the necessary power easily.

  • Connectivity Ethernet, Wifi

Considering Wifi is built in, why is there a $10 option for WIFI (USB) and what brand/model is it?

    • Ah I see the confusion, because they didn't come with wifi we have some wifi USBs to add as well!

      • so… is wifi built-in as in your description, or is that misleading and you're charging an extra $10 for a wifi dongle?

        • Description has been edited.
It does not come with Wifi
They only charge the additional $10 if you want/require a Wifi dongle

        • +2

haha nah not misleading here, that's the Dell description from their website, Wifi dongles are extra , as there is no built in wifi

          Cheers,

          • @FuseTechAu:

haha nah not misleading here, that's the Dell description from their website, Wifi dongles are extra , as there is no built in wifi

Now I'm totally confused. I thought this was a HP

            • +3

              @StevieRay: HP***** REEEEEE

its a HP yes , unconsciously wrote that.

      • Yea, totally my fault for the confusion. Thanks for clarifying,

  • +3

I missed this boat like 4 times before but pulled the trigger, can finally divorce my NAS and Docker systems!

  • anyone know if these are good enough for a Blue Iris NVR setup?

    • +1

My understanding is that you want anything gen 6 and up to allow for hardware acceleration. However, they recommend to stay away from 't' model CPU's as they are underpowered https://ipcamtalk.com/wiki/choosing-hardware-for-blue-iris/

      • +1

        I don't think that's the actual reason.
I think they recommend against them as they can be more expensive.

They have no issue saying a desktop 3rd or 4th gen will be ok, when a 6th gen 'T' CPU is at least equal if not better than 3rd/4th gen.
Especially so when to comes to hardware H264.

If someone were to want the small form factor 6th gen T and is willing to pay the premium over a 4th gen desktop CPU then i think that would work for them.

Even says on the site "Models recommended here are chosen for favorable pricing."

        • I just want something I can fit in ~1RU of space, thats cheap enough and work well, to replace my current QNAP as the QVR Pro software isnt amazing
          :)

          • @SBOB: The link sandman posted has all the info.
The interpretation i get from it is they think non T systems are better performance for money, which is totally correct.
Weather or not that performance is needed i'm not sure.
I feel like it's not, as they also kinda thumbs up 3rd and 4th gen CPUs that would be not faster than a thermally limited T SKU 6th GEN
I personally would give a 6th GEN T sku a go in this case as I'd also want a small form factor unit.
If it does the bulk of it's lifting with hardware accelerated encoding then it should be fine, but take that with a grain of salt.

OP @FusetechAu, Got one of your Lenevo Tiny the other day.
Excellent 3 day delivery to Brisbane.

    Thanks

    • +3

Im glad!! Always striving for faster

  • +1

Im thinking about building a networked computer to replace my NAS to hold my movies (plex server), photos, etc etc. Ive got an old seagate networked drive with all the storage atm. This should be okay?

    • It depends a lot on whether you need to transcode anything (ie. remote access, friends or family using your Plex server)
If you need to transcode 4k content you need something pretty beefy.

According to Plex, this should handle a couple of 1080p transcoding streams.

    • Bought one on last deal - works fine as plex server on local network
Some things to consider - need to reset bios setting looking for keyboard to boot; need video dummy plug to run without monitor ($10).
Used TeamViewer software (free for private use) to remotely manage on network. Takes a while to set up but works really well.
      I recommend this unit

      • Can I run time machine on this? (Ie back up my macs onto the networked drives)

  • Does this support DDR3 or DDR4?

    • +1

      DDR4!

  • +1

    I want a surface deal…..

    • I saw Surface laptop but not sure how it compares with surface Pro 5, which was sold out.

    • +3

Alright since you asked so nicely , I will push for a sale Friday!

      • Thanks mate. Will wait tomorrow!

        • +1

Looks like Surfaces are due for next week, tomorrow will be a Lenovo Thinkpad T460/70s sale! decent pricing as well

  • Does anyone know if this supports wake on lan?

    • of course

  • +1

My NAS hard drives just crashed in an old 214 Synolgy. The NAS is solely used for playback of media files on different TVs around the house.

Rather than replacing the expensive drives, was thinking of getting something like this with a decent external hard drive.

Would something like this work for my user case?

    • sub as i'm keen on this as well. i've been leaving my main gaming PC on around the clock just so i can stream 1080p mp4s to my bedroom TV. i've been thinking of alternate more power efficient solutions. I prefer if it was all self contained instead of having to hook up an external HDD to it, just have to cough up for a 1TB+ nvme…

    • +1

I think it would be fine. Just be aware of the single point of failure being the single external USB HDD, have backups etc.

In theory you’d be loosing n-1 disks of read performance when compared to your NAS, but I dont think it would impact large, sequential reads like watching a movie.

  • +1

How hard is reinstalling windows if i BYO SSD upgrade (ie - can i chuck it in, reinstall windows from a USB and then it will pickup the license from BIOS?)

    • Think this would work fine - usually the case for most OEM builders like HP and Dell.

Otherwise, clone with Macrium Reflect if you have a compatible external case for your SSD

  • Do you have any monitors to go with these? Basic 24" sorta thing?

  • Any with HDMI to connect to a TV?

Or how to connect to HDMI?

    • +1

Going off the image, no. You'll need a DP to HDMI adapter.

      • Had issue with my DP to HDMI adapter.

Just never worked, not sure if it was PC or the adapter itself.

        Will try another one.

        • DP -> HDMI come in two types, active and passive. Passive is limited to 4K30, but is cheaper and only works on some devices (DP++ devices). Active is more expensive but can support 4K60 if the adapter supports HDMI >=2.0

If in doubt or need 4K60, go with an active adapter or one thats labelled with HDMI 2.0

          • @allewell: Ok, mine was passive.

            Don’t need 4K.

TV is just 1080P. Should any passive one work on for 1080P?

            • @JimB: it depends if this model's display ports are DP++. While I don't know, I would be surprised if this modern-ish corporate desktop doesn't support DP++

    • +1

Yes, you just use a Display Port to HDMI cable.

  • "Add a nice new 256nvme SSD which will set you back $214!!"

Most expensive NVMe I've ever heard of!

    /sarcasm

  • Dman wished I bought the surface over the Dell latitude yesterday

    • Whats your order? DM me and ill check if its not out yet I can switch that for you

      • -1

Ahh no I booked with the deal yesterday from the other seller on ebay

  • Any options to have multi Ethernet ports on this?

    • USB to Ethernet?

  • Any desktop options with configuration i7 7th gen or above or equivalent AMD + 500GB SSD + 16GB DDR4 RAM?

  • Just confirming these are dual video output, one via DP and other VGA? Pic of the rear chassis seems to indicate a second DP - guessing that's a blank? Was wanting to have the option for dual digital video outputs.

  • Windows 11 on a pre 8000 gen processor ???? no security !

    • You can opt for windows 10 if you like, just add in the notes when purchasing!

    • This is false - you get exactly the same patching and updates as fully supported processors.

In the early days that was subject to change, but now that Microsoft allow this with specific registry keys, and they've got a gazillion unsupported-CPU users, they aren't going to pull the rug.

  • What options would you have that have 4k video output?

    • Everything from at least a decade ago has a 4K video output - just connect https://www.amazon.com.au/Plugable-DisplayPort-Supports-disp… to the onboard DisplayPort output to get a 4K60 HDMI output.

You have to go back a long, long time to find a machine that doesn't have at least a DisplayPort 1.2 output…

      • Here is me with an i5-4570 and no 4k ;)

        • That is from almost a decade ago 😁😁

  • Oh man, sold out. Was too slow and missed out. :(

  • Doh, was about to buy one but had to eat dinner.

Please let me know if you have more in stock or have a cancelled order

    • DM me and I'll see what we have left in the next 2 days, might have an odd one left over

  • Great, I got the email alert for this exactly 9 mins ago… 🙄

    • ahhh dam! I do have a awesome Lenovo Thinkpad T460s deal coming tomorrow! so perhaps that might interest you

  • +1
