After having seen the code VIVID5 for a bunch of Dell products, I decided to try out a few variants and found that VIVID20 is a valid code too. A quick DuckDuckGo search took me to a page called Dell Youniverse that's part of Vivid Sydney.

It reads at the bottom:

"To celebrate Dell being at Vivid Sydney, we are offering you a 20% discount on any Dell XPS (excluding clearance models). Offer not in conjunction with any other offers. Apply Coupon “Vivid20” at checkout. Offer valid between 27 May – 30 June 2022."

I've tried it with a few XPS laptops and it does not seem to stack with existing discounts, so it's only useful for anything having a discount of less than 20% already.

Update: I just noticed it works for XPS Desktops as well. And snep mentioned below that the code stacks with the 7% student coupon. Thanks!

Note: VIVID20 may stack with VIVID5 - credit r0xz

Lately I have started hating companies not offering high end laptops with AMD processors

    • +2

I was all for AMD processors till 12th gen Intel processors came out.

      • +10

Performance/$ is still better for AMD

        • +13

          Battery life too right?

          • +1

@eecan: We aren't debating AMD vs Intel . Please read what I've said, I don't prefer companies offering their high end range without AMD

            • -1

@urahara: Well for me battery life is a relevant metric for high end laptops irrespective of the processor brand (not gaming because there is no hope for the battery there lol but for editing). Just as performance/$ might be for you.

          • +3

@eecan: Yeah when you take into account power consumption 12th gen is not so crash hot compared to 5000nand 6000 zen.

Which means for mobile I would prefer and to intel.

          • +3

@eecan: Battery life on relevant thinkpad laptops is an additional 6-7 hours with AMD 6000 series vs 12th gen intel.

When doing what? Which models specifically?

              • @eug: When doing whatever standard benchmarks lenovo uses.

As for which models specifically, you can just lookup any thinkpad that has two variants - intel 12gen and AMD 6000 series and look at the specs for battery life, e.g. T14, T14s, X13 gen3

Oh. I was hoping for actual real-life usage numbers. Manufacturer-stated battery life has always been …. questionable. :)

                  • @eug: Yes but for a given series the relative difference should be comparable.

      • +1

Intel is powerful, but requires significantly more power getting there.

I’d only buy an Intel on a full desktop replacement, or if it was a straight-up ridiculous deal.

With Ryzen, you get up to x2 battery life, a much better iGPU (if required) and much better performance per watt at laptop-friendly levels.

Intels only start pulling ahead when you hit around the 75 watt levels and above. At which point, you start needing a serious thermal solution, or don’t mind dealing with awful fan noise.

Intel has made big improvements this gen, but they’re still not as good as Ryzen.

For desktop though, I’d personally just go with whichever was cheapest.

    • +2

I've started hating companies selling things they don't even possess, then making you wait 3 months to get it.

  • +7

Beautiful machines but no HDMI port, no usb-a port, new XPS 13s don't even have audio jacks, plus Dell QC issues…

Feels like the discounted price should be the regular price.

    • +1

I can live without all of those things. The headphone jack is a minor inconvenience, but all of my headsets are either BT at home or USB-C at the office. If you're spending $3k+ on a svelte, top of the range laptop, you're probably part of the same market that has BT headphones…

      • +1

Unfortunately, the XPS build quality has taken a dive in the last 2 years.

        • +8

Just to be clear, build quality hasn't taken a dive but QC has. The fit and finish of the new XPS models (2020-) is way better PROVIDED you don't get a dud (chances are higher now).

I've owned an XPS 15 with not a single issue for almost 3 years now, while I know people who experienced a problem in their first month of ownership who then proceeded to have a new problem every month.

If you find a problem with your XPS in the first 30 days, RETURN IT, DO NOT OPT FOR REPAIR. For something to go bad in the first month means there is some underlying issue which if you're unlucky, repair after repair won't be able to find and fix. If you don't have a problem in the first month, you're unlikely to have problems ever until the machine is old and EOL.

          • +2

@dogsryummy: Yes, you put it better than I did, it's the QC.

Also, if it's bad, return it for a refund. Otherwise Dell will replace it with a "refurbished" model.

      • +5

No you are wrong. I don't like the latency of BT headphones and the reduced audio quality. So I always prefer headphone jack connections.

        • +1

So I always prefer headphone jack connections.

Just attach a USB-C dongle to your headphone cable and never remove it. If your headphones are really high-end you wouldn't be satisfied with the internal DAC on your laptop or phone anyway.

        • Comes with a dongle in the box.

      • +3

Ok about the ports tell me if this analogy works or not:

If a prestige car maker like Rolls Royce knew all their buyers for the Rolls Royce Phantom never drives the car personally and instead hires chauffeurs, do they make the driver seat, controls, and everything else the driver touches lackluster because the customer probably never needs it? I don't think so since it would ruin the whole package.

The problem I have with Dell's prestige XPS line is that sure, like you said, I'll probably never need all those extra ports with all my BT devices, just like I wouldn't NEED parking sensors on my Rolls since my chauffeur does all the driving, but if I sit into the driver seat of the Rolls, I'll still have all those "unnecessary" controls available to me, and I wouldn't find myself complaining "how come the damn Toyota Camry has this feature but my Rolls doesn't".

On the other hand, if I need to plug a usb-a drive into my XPS, or present at a meeting where the projector only has a HDMI cable, or out of the blue need to plug in an audio jack, all of a sudden I find myself lacking features that are available in much cheaper laptops.

To me the prestigious price-tag shouldn't be tailored to fit a "prestigious" lifestyle where the manufacturer assumes I'm living the all bluetooth, dongle-free life. The high price-tag should at the bare-minimum cover all the features that consumers could reasonably need, but I don't think Dell has done that here. (I mean I get usb-c is the future but I don't think demanding a HDMI port is unreasonable here).

Can I live with the XPS line in its current form. Absolutely I can. But it just feels like I'm letting Dell get away with something (provided I pay the price they are currently charging) and it bugs me personally.

Even Apple has seemed to realise this and are adding back ports to their macbook pro lines.

        • -1

The problem with this analogy is that you specifically said XPS 13, a model aimed at people that probably don't want a chauffeur.

When your target market wants a smaller and smaller coupe, then you have to start doing things like removing the seats from the rear, reducing head space to a minimum.

It's fine if you want rear seats in a coupe, but it means an SL class Mercedes isn't for you.

          (edit. didn't neg you)

          • @pumpkinspice: But this doesn't feel like asking for rear seats to me, this feels like asking for wiper blades on my window so I can see when driving in the rain. There are other similar form factor laptops like the Macbook Air with an audio jack, and previous XPS 13s also had audio jacks, and I can't see what features Dell gave us in return for the removal of the audio jack. Like I would be more satisfied if they replaced the audio jack with an extra usb-c port.

And moving away from the XPS13, the XPS15 and 17 all lack HDMI ports, which I feel like if the Macbook Pro 14 and 16 can charge me $3000+ and give me a HDMI port, why can't Dell with their $3000+ machines.

I guess at the end of the day some people can live with the decisions Dell is making, but I can't.

            • @Tutubargain: I politely disagree.

You can still fit your wiper blades, you just need to use an adapter.
In the case that the wiper blades are your wired headphones, this laptop comes with said adapter.

It's a strange time to be alive when Apple offers more connectivity than non-Apple.

        • +1

Get yourself a dongle or a different model that fits your use case, rather than something fashionable. If the XPS doesn't fit your use case, why are you even considering it?

      • +1

"If you're spending $3k+ on a svelte, top of the range laptop"

It's debatable that an XPS 13 is considered 'top of the range', not with offerings like the Asus ROG Flow Z13. If I was in the market for a small powerful laptop, I know what I'd prefer, especially considering the QC issues.

        • As cool as the ROG range is, it’s for a different market. XPS is a professional/business user product, with all the trappings of NBD warranties and support.

I often wish that the gaming industry would move away from the uggo design aesthetic. It’s so superficial.

    • Its too expensive. Depending on the work, I would buy a MBP over these.

      • I have the M1 MBA, which even after 18 months is still probably as powerful, at half the price. Sometimes I just need a native windows machine.

  • No more 13" + XPS?

  • Is latitude objectively worth the premium over XPS?

  • +1

Will cashrewards 10% cashback work with it?

  • +4

Excellent tip. I cancelled an order of XPS 9305 to avail this coupon. Utilized a glitch
    * select New XPS 9315 (12 Gen core I7 + 16 gb + 512 GB) for $2199.
    * upgraded the SSD to 1TB (brings the cost to $2007 perhaps a glitch)
    * applied VIVID20 to get it for around $1605
    * went via CashRewards to perhaps might avail another 10%, but happy with specs for that price even if that doesn't work.

I don't think I'd miss the audio jack with BT headset but USB-C to 3.5mm headset adapter aren't that rare or expensive.

    • I am not able to see that config for $2199

      • Ah looks like they've updated something as starting with https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/new-xps-13-lapt… and changing to Core I7 was previously for $2199 which is now appearing for $2426 and when Disk updated to 1TB goes back to $2235.
With 20% it comes down to $1788, which not as good as one I saw but still good for a 12 Gen i7 Config

        • They've had a few store glitches.

I was looking at the XPS 13 Plus 9320 about a month ago deliberating on if I should buy it, and the RAM upgrade from 16GB to 32GB didn't result in a price increase.
They've since fixed that now, for a cool $600…

        • it comes down because it moves the processor back to i5

    • Did you get your order confirmation?

  • Bit of a side convo, but does anyone know if Razer ever have good sales for eofy? Love their razer books

  • +2

I just checked and it stacks with the 7% student coupon.

Tempted to get an xps 15 with oled, but 2.8k is still a decent chunk of change…

    • with same condition i got between 3.3-3.4k, oled or uhd, i assume you got 512GB and 16GB?

      • yep that was with 16gb/512gb

    • What is the 7% coupon?

    • If only I can made the purchase after seeing your post…I just received my laptop this afternoon and open it, and I realized I forgot to applied the 7% discount…Not sure if I can return this one and get full refund and place a new order

  • +3

Not buying but respect to HumptyDumpty for digging deeper and figuring out that code!

Had an XPS 15 9500 (previous gen) from new, amazing machine, awesome reviews. Within months, the SD port died, battery issues, charging port light not working among other issues. Dell tech came out 5 or 6 times to repair on site. Great service, minimises down time, but still, unacceptable amount of issues. Ended up with a new unit and it's been flawless since. Happy overall and would buy XPS again, hoping quality is more consistent with future models.

    • +2

Yeah with the new XPSes you either get a flawless unit or a lemon that will drive you insane.

I feel like some units that come off the production line are just cursed, no amount of repairs will fix them.

  • No 6800h (or 6800u) and nothing above 60hz.
    Hard pass Dell.

Lenovo has Dell clocked so far this year.
Waiting for the new Thinkpad T14s w/ Ryzen 6800u and 90hz OLED.

  • Is it worth spending the extra few hundred on the new xps 13 or save some money and opt for the inspiron 13?

  • will it stack with the amex credit offer ? whats a good budget model for 13 year old?

  • +1

@humptydumpty Typing in new code variants, nice. It's skills like this that'll get you your OzB black belt!!

  • -1

How to get 7% student discount? Does that stack with this 20% code?

Get extra cashback (30 or 50) from Intel

  • No longer applying for me to full price New XPS devices :( " This code is not eligible for use on items in your cart. " Sales support confirm

  • Still working, tried on New XPS 13 and 15 both and ordered XPS 15. By default it was showing 15% then I applied this and that made it 20%.

  • Q1. Any suggestions on accidental damage cover please? Through dell or elsewhere?

I bought xps 13 plus with VIVID20 and 7% code. Missed to apply the VIVID5, still working :(

Q2. I didn't go through shopback as it was not approved code. Is that being accepted by shopback?

    • I used VIVID20 and got my Shopback cashback tracked at 12% within minutes of purchase + $150 Dell Challenge + 10% Amex Cashback tracked

      • Thanks for replying. It got tracked for me too but wondering if it will be honoured or rejected.

Were you having Amex 10% offer (targeted?) Or is it for all amex card holders?

        • Not sure about Shopback. Hopefully they honour it. Amex I believe is targeted. As I have it on Explorer but not on Essential. I am just thinking if I should cancel my current order and stack both VIVID20/5.

          • @interstellar: Yeah, for me it was 25% with both coupons. With amex, it's great.
            Not too hopeful with shopback
