  • I am also looking at this unit but possibly with i5 or i7. can someone please explain if AMD Ryzen 5 is as good or better?

I think the performance ranges within the models i5/i7/Ryzen 5 family.

I tend to use those CPU benchmark/comparison websites to compare the performance/value if I find a laptop that fits other criterias like screen size, RAM etc

      eg. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/

for these ultra low powered chips AMD is generally recommended as the better one for the average user. AMD APUs just scale better at lower wattages, and compared to intel where they cut back on cores to make them power efficient (before 12th gen, all of these -U chips are 4core 8threads, no matter if its a i5 or an i7, the latter just have like slightly better clocks etc) whereas the AMD options are mostly either 6c12t (R5) or 8c16t(R7) thats better at multicore workloads. Their igpu is also generally faster than intel counterparts.

Intel does have things like thunderbolt support, and they have the definite edge in single core boost clocks but I dont think that matters all too much in most situations.

The 5625u is based on Zen 3 architecture. It is faster in single-core and multi-core workloads vs 10th gen and 11th gen i5s and i7s. AMD has been focusing a lot more on power efficiency compared to Intel, therefore performance per watt and battery life is usually much better on an R5 or R7.

Intel 12th gen i5 and i7 has a brute force approach, with performance at all costs P cores. Unfortunately it generates a lot of heat, uses a lot of power and needs a laptop with good cooling to reduce throttling. If the laptop is plugged in and has good cooling this is fine. However once unplugged performance significantly drops and battery life is a big issue on 12th gen.

  • thanks guys. honestly I'm no IT person. If i just surf net, stream video and zero gaming, for performance and battery should i go AMD, i5 or i7? your suggestions will help me decide which to get thanks.

      Get an ipad

      • Probably right. If your just consuming content then go this path. It will outlast the laptop and be a cheaper initial outlay.

    • This laptop would suit you well.

    • Find a decent refurbished one - plenty of ex-corporate laptops going around since a lot of companies are recapitalizing lease equipment, they go for around 250-300 (or a new tablet is an alternative).

  • would I be correct in assuming no CashRewards on this since the EOFY code doesn't appear on CR site?

    • Thinking that too

    • +1

It should work. This is taken from CR site: “ Cashback is however eligible on codes generated by Lenovo on its website, even though they may not be listed on Cashrewards, provided last click before purchase is from Cashrewards.”

      • thanks - that makes it pretty clear

I've given this a go as a purchase for my parents who've always had a desktop previously but need something that will replace old desktop and also be able to travel with them for a couple of months

      • My order went through yesterday, it will ship 22/06 and eta 24/06 but it's not looking good for CashRewards - I would have expected the order to have tracked already almost 24hrs later. Any idea if these take longer than 24hrs or when the item actually ships @tightarse

  • Seems like a better deal than: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/693963

But 79 votes vs 18… hmmm

    • $10 more you get double SSD and RAM

    • Maybe because it's from a poster who doesn't post much 😜

Anywho, I'm happy to have found this value to share with you all

  • FYI cheaper via the parents edu site $987.01 , but it is OOS now on both sites

    • Do you know if you can purchase via edu and claim for business tax? I could have used edu but didn't use it in case it was not allowed

    • Thats what I did earlier today

  • This deal looks pretty good when adding the 14% cashback from Cashrewards today

  • Back in stock on the parents edu site which you can access without needing an .edu email address. Comes to $987.01 and ships early July
