Graphite. Your probably looking at Platinum?

Don’t forget $100 AMEX cash back

What about the Xbox gift card 10% off on ShopBack?

    • Yeah this works! You can only add a max $1000 to your MS account per day and use in a single transaction.

I really hate how Microsoft is selling their goods.
They want to sell me a machine without telling me what CPU is on it?
    Is this 3rd Gen i7?
Also i7 by itself does not mean much.

    • +3

Agree, very annoying. With a bit of digging under 'tech specs' on the Surface Pro 8 page itself:
      Processor:
      Quad-core 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-1135G7 Processor, designed on the Intel® Evo™ platform
      Quad-core 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1185G7 Processor, designed on the Intel® Evo™ platform
i5 and i7 options with storage 256GB and above built on the Intel® Evo™ platform

  • Trying to decide between i5 or i7 16gb.
Some reviews say i5 performance 90% as good, with longer battery, lower temps and quieter fan action (as expected)
    $220 odd difference.
    Thoughts?

my thoughts are put the money into a powerful, ultra light notebook that you won't have to buy a f'n keyboard (w/touchpad) for, separately. it should be included, what a rip
      fu microshaft

This is catered for different use cases. There are some cases where people just need to use a tablet hence its a 2 in 1 device. You're comparing apples to oranges and only looking at the device from your use case.

Outside I need a tablet and cant afford to whip out a laptop infront of a client and start scribing/typing while walking around…. in the office i use it as a computer plugged into a dock/hub.

    • Yeah I decided on the i5 16gb.
Asked for the 10% Student Discount but they said it wasn't available, however they could provide a 10% refund once the order was received. I added $1000 credit to my Microsoft account using the Xbox gift cards from ShopBack, saving an additional 10%. The order was then processed via chat, using split payment.

      So total for Surface Pro i5 16gb 256gb Graphite = $1383.20

Note: Max $1000 can be added to your Microsoft account per day and processed in single transaction.

      • Nice one mate. I'm leaning toward i5 16gb too.
I do want to keep this for at least 4 years though.
I think the CR TGG PPI4 SC deal is better than this though.

      • Ignore my last comment. They are about the same.

      • Did you pay 1000 with gift card the remainder by card?

        • Correct. Loaded $1000 into my MS account then paid the balance with card.

      • But can you load more the next day and use it all in 1 transaction? Eg the whole $1600?

        • No, its $1000 per transaction (purchase)

  • Looks like there's no further student discount on this on their website (I'm eligible and checked). Might be possible through chat.

They can keep the free case, no bundled keyboard is a deal breaker for me…

Does anyone seriously buy a surface without the keyboard?

    • +1

Get the keyboard (and pen) from good guys ($386). Cash rewards is having 12% cash back today and the good guys also chucking in $40/$60 gift card on click and collect purchases.

So if you manage to stack all deals, you'll get an i7 surface pro with accessory and keyboard and pen for just under $2K (if you use the 10% xbox gift card deal, even cheaper).

Usually Ive seen ms throw in the bundle for this device at $2.1k without third party deals/promo.

Me. i have 2 surfaces , bought 3 separate times to upgrade but kept the very first keyboard cover that came with surface pro 3.

i don't want to pay additional for something i don't need.

      • The pro 8 uses a different keyboard to the pro 3 to pro 7 unfortunately.

        • I stand corrected. My latest surface is a pro 7 thus it was bad assumption on my part to think 8 is the same. This is a rubbish move by Microsoft. On the other hand I’ll keep that in mind as I upgrade. I mostly follow the odd number cycles (so far 3,5,7) so probably when 9 comes along.

      • -2

I would guess that would make you the exception to the rule.

This would be my third surface model upgrade and the current keyboard will go with the surface when I gift/donate it to the next owner.

IMHO, having the primary retail surface SKU not include a keyboard is the equivalent of suggesting that cars should be sold without wheels, just in case the buyer wants to use keep the wheels from their previous vehicle.

        • Disagree. There’s a surface laptop range if you want a built in keyboard. You are picking the wrong tool for the wrong job.
          That’s like buying a 2 cab ute and expect a 8 seater.

You need a minibus. A surface book/laptop. Not a surface pro, which is a tablet.

  • pretty sure most ozbargainers bought the surface pro 7+ for $898 a few weeks ago

  • can anyone share on how the amex cashback works? is the cashback automatic once we paid with the AMEX card? is it eligible on any AMEX card?

    • +1

You have had to save the offer/promo to your card. The promo/offer should be visible when you login to amex, otherwise you weren't targeted for the offer. Once saving the promo, all you need to do is follow the T&Cs (ie purchase surface on MS Store using amex). Once meeting condition, youll get an email from amex (automated) saying youve met the condition and the cashback is on its way.

      • cheers!

  • For whoever participated in this promotion, there is a undocumented trick for further reducing the price.

Microsoft is offering trade in bonus for Surface Pro 8.

By looking at their website you can trade in an iPad mini 1st gen for $220.

If you look around eBay or Gumtree you can get an average conditioned iPad mini for as cheap as $50.

    So all together for an i5 16G Surface Pro 8 : 1648 - 148 (student discount) - 160 (Xbox gift Card) - 170 (trade in) = $1170.

Cant find any better deal than this.

    • Did you actually do this? Can you please send link to ipad trade in?

      10% off student is 164 not 148.
Max of $1000 gift card credit per order.
Ipad minis go for closer to 100 on eBay and gumtree I believe.

      • yes i did.

sorry got confused with between student discount and GST, as this is a purchase for work and i am going to claim GST as well.

I added $1500 worth of Microsoft gift card and saved $150.

bought an iPad mini gen 1 on eBay for $59 (listing was for $69 applied a $10 ebay promo code)

        And Student discount 164.

Happy to pm all the screenshots if you want

        • Where are you getting 170 for iPad mini? I only get $21.

          • @quill: You need to pick the option "sueface pro 8 promotion" when asking if you have recently bought a surface device from Microsoft. You'll need an order number to get the bonus. I got quoted for $220. If you can buy one for around $50 then you get $170 off.
