Possibly the cheapest you can get this printer for at the moment, I know the original price is ridiculous without the coupon however with the coupon it’s pretty darn good value.

How is this for a 3d printing beginner (I'm generally pretty competent with tech stuff in general)?

The basic Ender 3 series are very well regarded as entry printers for bang for buck, with a huge community to assist. This model has all the common "nice to haves" that people normally upgrade the regular Ender 3s to have: auto bed leveling, spring steel sheet, filament runout sensor, direct drive. If I was in the market for another FDM printer I'd be interested in this (although I haven't had a look around to see what the price seems like compared to other places).

      • So the Ender 3 upgraded is still the goto?

        • This is better value than the stock Ender 3 if you just want to get printing. The original Ender 3 is more a hobby project in of itself.

    • +1

      Pretty much what @salem says.

I’m also in the beginner category and from my research this is the best bang for buck if you want the Ender 3 V2 with all the nice to have upgrades and latest version of the machine.

Perfect for a beginner. Endless amounts of tinkering can be done once you get your knowledge up - it's actually endless how much these can be modified, sometimes to the point where they out-do printers worth several times more.

Highly recommend, just remember that there will be fine tuning to get your prints looking mint.

The extruder on this may also need to be upgraded, and one of the first proper prints you make should be a better cooling system for the print as it will help with warp.

    • How does the Tronyx XY-2 Pro compare to this?

Before you buy I would ask:
      1. What do you want to print?
      2. What size do you need to print?
      3. What price point are you comfortable starting at?
      4. How quick and cheap do you want parts when they break?

A beginner can start with either a $200 printer or $2000 printer. There's no real difference in learning curve.

You could buy a hot end or extruder for an Ender 3 (or any clone) for example for ~$20 on Amazon and have it delivered the next day and installed and running again <30min. The 'Sprite' extruder on the S1 is brand new and the cheapest I can see on ebay is around $135 delivered in about a week.

You can get comparible quality on both printers but at what cost do you need miniscule quality improvements or luxury functions?

Still seems too expensive for what it is. I'd expect a proper all metal hotend for this price. Otherwise you may as well just buy cheap upgrades for a Voxelab Aquila and do a proper job of it.

    • I wish it was cheaper but this price point isn't bad. Pretty much the same price as an Anycubic Vyper which I would say is it's direct competitor. This is also direct dual gear drive over the Vyper's bowden extruder.

      • This is more than double the sale cost of an Ender v2 clone but still hasn't fixed major flaws. The cooling system is inadequate for common scenarios like bridging, steep overhangs, or simply printing faster. The hotend is still prone to offgassing and cogging due to the PTFE/nozzle proximity, but even harder to repair due to the added complexity.

Direct drive is nice but less necessary than fixing the fundamentals, unless you really need to print flexibles a tad faster. If this were in the $3xx price bracket you could fix the other problems and come out ahead.

        • My comments are based from a business perspective and thus is priced appropriately for the market.

As mentioned it's similarly spec'd to the Vyper which goes around the $500 with the most popular mods applied to the Ender 3.

Direct drive is a 'one up' on the Vyper to give them the edge. At least marketing wise.

Creality is selling it at $5xx so at $3xx they would lose $200 per sale.

Fully 'specing' this model out with top notch cooling leaves little room to grow for the 'S2/S1+' in the future.

It's aimed at the people who want most of the popular upgrades to the Ender 3 right out of the box.

You and I would most likely (assuming here) go for an Ender 3/Aquila and add our owns mods, so we're not the target market.

          • @Villainous: I'm sure it makes business sense, but I'd also argue good cooling is part of the suite of popular upgrades. It seems they already have a 'Pro' version with a fixed hotend, however that's even worse value again.

            • @Cyb3rGlitch: Not disagreeing with you at all on both points.

I also look at this (and most) models and think where's the next level cooling?

As i said it does give them room to bring out an 'S2/S1+'

Price will drop over time on both S1 and S1 Pro

  • Not bad but Kingroon ftw

    • Which Kingroon are you suggesting?

  • My only reservation with this printer is reports of jams at the hot end + taking longer than non direct drive to access and clear. Anyone have experience with this printer and can give feedback?

  • Is the pro version for $623 worth it or is this enough? completely new and would rather buy things that are installed already as I don't really feel like messing around with it at the start.

    • Only you can answer that. There's no right/wrong, yes/no answer in 3D printing

You can get comparable quality prints from a <$300 model.

While the S1/S1 Pro might have 'luxury' upgrades, you will be paying a premium for maintanence/repair with the wait times and complexity to go with it.

Work out what you value most then find the model that best meets those needs at the price point your happy to pay (and don't forget the parts price).

    • I’m wondering the same thing. Might be worth it for the all metal extruder

  • Sold out. :(

Other eBay sellers that offer the 20% off code have price jacked it.

  • I Bought the Ender S1 a month ago. Its very simple to use. plug and play. Just run the auto bed level and start printing. Very different experience than other printers I have had in the past which require tinkering. The prints are of all good quality.
