Options for Non Gaming Laptop, Any Recommended EOFY Deal? Don't need a good screen. Budget $1000

Hi guys,

I am currently using ASUS R552JV-CN196H which I bought in 2014 and now it gets lag and no Wi-Fi 5G connectivity also Bluetooth is not working property, so basically it is quite out of date now

I am just looking for a laptop for fast internet surfing (I would assume large memory storage) and watching 4K or even higher quality TV series documentaries on my TV by connecting the laptop and TV via HDMI cable (I am not sure if this would require better CPU or graphics)

I don't play any games and I always use my monitors while using laptop so I have no requirement for the laptop screen quality at all

I am also curious why nowadays the laptop usually gets small hard disk storage, so I think I would need to buy an external hard drive to make sure I can store all of my downloaded TV series documentaries and movies, hence the USB input speed would be important I guess?

I am not sure if $1000 would get me a suitable one which can be used for at least 5-6 years in the current market and

I would really appreciate your help with any suggestions

I am also curious why nowadays the laptop usually gets small hard disk storage,

The industry as a whole has moved from Hard drives (slow, but cheap) to Solid State Drives (fast, but more expensive). So there's a trade-off — you end up with faster, but smaller capacity boot drive out of the box. Gone are the days where you can buy a laptop with a 2TB HDD as the boot drive.

If you have your eyes set on a external USB hard drive for storage, you don't need to worry about USB speeds, HDD's don't spin fast enough to saturate USB 3.0 connection. You would have to worry about speed if you were building your own portable SSD out of a high-end NVME drive, but that's another topic for another day.

There's quite a few laptops to choose from in the $1k range.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/15-6inch

Intel NUC M15 Touchscreen. Good build quality, very bright (400nit) and color accurate display, great all-day battery life. Generous 16GB of RAM included.

Vivobook Pro OLED Decent build quality, vibrant OLED display at a very low price. CPU is powerful. Downside: stuck with 8GB of RAM.

Lenovo Thinkpad e15 Intel Gen2 $800 Cheap all rounder, nothing spectacular, comes with 8GB RAM but upgradable.

Acer Aspire 5 $698, you get a $100 bonus Gerry Harvey gift card. Basic laptop, cheap, you get what you pay for but will technically get the job done if all you do is surf and watch netflix.

    • Thanks so much for your suggestions, I dont have any requirement about the screen so I would prefer that Lenovo one

  • Wonder if a killer EOFY deal will come

    • I am waiting on it too

  • you can replace the hdd with ssd, and repleace the network card.

    • Thanks for the suggestion, that could be another option except for the lag while playing 4k videos…

  • "ASUS R552JV-CN196H" who even comes up with these names…
