Used Tesla Model 3 Price Drop When Model Y Released and Experiences with a Used Tesla?

Newbie to car market.

I am planning to buy a new car. My preferable choice is Tesla Model 3 (second hand) or any Hybrid car.

As new model Y released in Australia, what are the chances to get the second hand Tesla model 3 or other models with cheaper prices (probably half $30k - $35k or cheaper)?

Based on my understanding, it depends on the how many people upgrade to new model Y.

Just want get your experiences of getting a second hand Tesla cars in general as well.

Appreciate any suggestions.

What? Used Tesla’s are fetching 5-10 grand more than new at the moment and that won’t be changing for a while.

    • thanks, you are right just compared on the official Tesla website and carsales website. I was under the impression whenever a car is out from the dealer, it will lost 10 to 15 % of its value. but for Telsa, seems to be its not the case.

Haha. Since covid it's been opposite day everyday for used cars

Do you not have a tv or read the news 🤷

      • I thought Tesla doest have dealerships

Here Is Why Tesla Has No Dealerships
BY GLENI LAME PUBLISHED NOV 25, 2021

There has been a big debate on how Tesla is not playing by the rules and selling their cars directly to customers without going through a dealership. The fact is, you can’t just buy a car straight from a manufacturer because of federal laws in compliance with the franchise law. This is what the traditional way of buying a car has been for the past 60 years or more, but that is changing with Tesla.

Choosing to have no dealerships around the country but rather just galleries that do not intend to sell you a Tesla but rather talk to you about the benefits of owning a Tesla or any other electric vehicle, Tesla seems to be putting the old-fashioned dealership style out of the contest.

Since the future is unknown, buy a crystal ball first.

    • +4

      Magic 8 ball is cheaper
      .

      • Just avoid the Magic 3080 ball

    • My crystal ball ran out of batteries long ago.

      • I think you had a defective crystal ball. You should have been told to stock up on a charger. ;)

        • Got some eneloops to spare?

    (probably half 30k-35k or cheaper)

    😂😂

If your budget is $35k then a Tesla is out of the question

    • -1

thanks. I can stretch up to 40k and planning to buy within next year but seems to be you are right. but based on the different sources like this, I can dream about getting Tesla lol.

      • -1

Maybe look to the new Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid coming out later this year. Much closer to your budget, reliable brand, good reviews OS, and a stepping stone to going EV.

        • Does it have OTA?

      • +1

If you don't need more than about 230km of range, a secondhand Hyundai Ioniq Electric Elite 28kwh MY2019 would suit your needs, and you'll possibly get one for under $40k. I've owned one for three years, have never run out of range, pay $2 to charge it scheduled overnight on an EV tariff with Powershop between midnight and 4am weeknights (7.46c per kWh x 28 kWh = $2.09c maximum charge).

        Mod: Private selling removed.

The cheapest of the 245 Teslas on carsales.com is 66888 for a 2019 model with 69888km.

    • +1

People willing to pay (or expecting to fetch for this kind of money) is no less than those buying used GPUs for 5% discount to new.

    • +2

That price is suspiciously similar to the km.

  • -3

    $TSLA is a premium brand.

People who want to drive a $TSLA should be prepared to pay a bit more for the privilege.

  • +11

    probably half 30k-35k or cheaper

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    Thanks for the laugh.

    • But but but, a Tesla will pay for itself in 3 years and consistently returns 10% on your initial investment each year… Tesla is safer than houses.

  • +1

Recommend pure ev over hybrid . Maybe look at byd atto or mg ev. Still prob 40-45k base model.
Still better to book asap and save or take out loan for rest as prices only going to rise for full ev.

  • Not enough coffee.

Tesla model 3 or other models with cheaper prices (probably half $30k - $35k or cheaper)?

OP, I literally cannot tell if this is a troll post or not. HALF PRICE FOR A TESLA MODEL 3? Are you serious?

    • -2

the price reflects their real value as opposed to what they are being touted at!

  • +3

    Troll post for sure.

Thanks for making my Sunday (though mass was pretty good this morning to be fair).

    • Not even a troll would consider that the model 3 would become half price

    • Troll post for sure.

^That, or OP is someone that will fall for a too good to be true scam. Next Post from OP, "Got myself a sweet half price deal had to paid in full to secure it, then seller ghosted me."

  • +6

You’ve clearly done 0 research… in what planet would a 2nd hand Tesla be 1/2 the price? Even pre-Covid a 2nd hand Tesla were still going for 10-15% less than their RRP

    • Isn't this what OZ Bargain has turned into for the last 3 to 6 months where a number of OP post's without doing any research or looking up anything?

  • +1

Demand for Teslas far out strip supply. No foreseeable price declines in sight even for used. In fact, used ones are in even higher demand and command a price premium since you can actually get them.

My wife has a model 3 on order since Dec last year, it's been delayed again and been told to expect Aug delivery (maybe).

You're better off looking at something in your price range.

    • Thought someone on OzB said that Tesla created it's own atom particles (then onto lithium and so on) and won't be imapcted by supply chain disruption.

Nissan leaf imported from Japan? I've just started looking and $35k seems very possible.

    • Hi, just checking if you have had any luck sourcing a leaf. Looking at this option too. Thanks in advance.

      • +1

A neighbour is about to import one, almost new, about $50k landed. No sign of it yet but I'm happy to report back when it's here

  • Demand for EVs is going to be strong while ever fuel prices are as high as they are now. Not many around. Plenty of demand despite many media outlets telling us we aren’t buying EVs. People are even paying big money for wrecks because EV conversions are increasing.

  • Get an electric MG or BYD or something - cheaper, good warranty & increasingly in stock

  • Yep, used Model 3 prices will drop - many owners are upgrading to the Model Y

  • what are the chances to get the second hand Tesla model 3 or other models with cheaper prices (probably half $30k - $35k or cheaper)

Mate don't read these stupid comments, they don't know what they're talking about. You can absolutely get them cheap I guarantee. All you need to do is wait until 2069 and you look for a 2020 model.

  • +1

I'm not sure if this is a serious post or not, but with the release of Model Y prices of used Model 3's were expected to fall somewhat.

Unfortunately Tesla rapidly sold out of their 2022 Model Y allocations and Tesla raised prices four days later across the whole lineup (including the Model 3). This has probably put paid to any short term discounting on used Teslas. Given that fuel prices are over two dollars a litre, I'd bet that demand for EV's will remain high for a long time.

I think $35k is unlikely but there is a real chance of used Model 3s at least becoming cheaper than new ones once the Model Ys start arriving.
There seem to be quite a few people who really wanted a Y but bought the 3 because it was available.
There are large numbers of new ones being brought in (if Shanghai stays open).
There was a huge surge of 2nd hand Model 3 listings last week after the Y was opened for orders. Sure they are all ridiculously expensive, but this is everyone trying to get in quick and sell them before the price drops.
I suspect the waitlist for new Model 3s will get a lot shorter as people switch orders to the Y.
It seems reasonable to expect covid induced silly prices for cars in general to moderate with time.

Of course prediction is hard, especially about the future, but I think in 2023 it is possible second hand Model 3s might become a reasonable option. Would be interesting to look up what second hand Model 3 prices are like in the US where supply is not so constrained.

  • There's one for sale for 69,420, with 59420 KM's. Great deal.

BREAKING: Tesla Model Y & Model 3 have been named the “most American-made” vehicles in the US by https://t.co/8eBlPTrifj. This includes both EVs and ICE vehicles.

Model Y overtook Model 3 for 2022 to be #1.

GM is not even in the top 10. @elonmusk https://t.co/ZRSwwMizE1

    Tesla Model Y
    Tesla Model 3
    Lincoln Corsair
    Honda Passport
    Tesla Model X
    Tesla Model S
    Jeep Cherokee
    Honda Ridgeline
    Honda Odyssey
    Honda Pilot

    Enjoy.

  • the other markets, second hand Tesla's dropped a fair bit, since significant price drops was announced.
In fact a lot of the second-hand dealerships had fire sales to clear their previous stock since it was an instant $10K writeoff from their purchase price.

Unfortunately Australia only got a tiny $ drop across the board (might still be higher before the last price hike)…the usual Aussie tax we pay….sigh.
