  • Not the heatsink version. Just make sure your mobo comes with a heatsink, which a lot of them do.

    • Thanks for the tip, yes it would be better with a heatsink.

  • It’s a good deal for sure.

  • Is this much of a deal compared to the Samsung 970 Evo plus 2TB nvme @ $237 (Amazon back in May)?

Honest question as it seems a lot for just 1TB.

    • The speeds on the 970 are way slower than this m.2, which is 7000mbs. That's why the price is much higher

The top end of anything, GPUs, cars, shower heads, is always very bad "bang for buck" in terms of function/performance.

How much of a "deal" the absolute screaming end of performance is depends on your situation. This is a deal by ozb standards, as in it's the current lowest price for this product.

Would I recommend this to most people of course not! Did I buy one myself? Yup =P I've personally gone for a blazingly fast 1tb and a slower 1tb (the 750). This way I can run the OS off a super quick drive, and can upgrade the other ssd in a few years when I need more storage.

    • 970 Evo Plus is PCIe Gen 3. This is Gen 4 which is more expensive since it's faster speed.

      • It's worth noting that gen3x4 caps out at 4gb/s, and gen4x4 caps at 8gb/s. If you're buying an ssd that's <4gb/s, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a pcie gen3 spec ssd.

    • If your motherboard supports PCIe gen 4, then it comes down to whether you can resist the PCIe gen 4 sequential read / write speed on large files.

Then, there is the recent change to 970 Evo Plus. You noticed the price drop on it. What Samsung did was to change the controller (to Elpis (which technically is PCIe gen 4 capable, but Samsung blocked that, leaving just PCIe gen 3 support)). The newer controller beats up SLC cache, random read/write performance, as well as boost the dynamic turbo write (larger dynamic SLC cache). However, the actual TLC NAND flash is more cost effective one.

    • Got that one back in May, it travelled over three continent to get here so Aus post can lose it in a day!

  • Does the SN850 comes with a disk transfer software? Will be upgrading from 970 EVO.

    • +3

You can use Macrium reflect its free. I wouldn't let software determine my choice of SSD.

      • Thanks. I haven't had to do a disk transfer for a long time. Back then I tried 3rd party software but the success rate was iffy. Only Samsung have a 'first party' application and it worked the first time. Good to know there is a good freeware now.

WD uses Acronis True Image. As long as you have a WD SSD/HDD it'll work.
One useful option with Acronis True Image is that it allows you to exclude files/folders from the cloning; useful if you're cloning to a smaller SSD/HDD, or as a backup.

      • Thanks for this!

  • Is this suitable for the PS5?
